Dark/Dark How Do You Build This??? Lack of Slots

Recommended Posts

So, I've been leveling a Dark/Dark Controller, and thus far it has been amazing. However, I am struggling figuring out how to build it? It seem like there are too many powers that need too many slots to be as effective as they should be, and there are too many that are worth taking. I was planning on trying to keep Shadowy Binds just as a damage dealer due to quick containment of bosses and it's quick recharge. I've already skipped Living Shadows, which I would like to take at some point. I struggled with taking Heart of Darkness or Shadow Field at 30. Pretty sure I am going to go Fire for my epic pool unless someone has a compelling alternative. I'm currently 32, and the only power I know I want to skip is Black Hole. Oi Vey, how does one fit in so much awesome!

My objective is to be able to solo at like maybe +2 x 3 or 4 tops once I am 50, with a fairly cost effective build.

Does anyone have any advice on suggested builds, or powers that are OK to skip?

Frankenslotting Acc/Hold/Recharge in pairs is good. Essentially 3 slots of enhancement for the price of two. Theres a few common recipies which are reasonably cheap to make.

I remember Stun not being quite as flexible in that regard but even frankenslotting acc/stun or whatever van help.

For Fade you have to go the frankenslotting route for Def/Recharge since it wont accept standard recharge SOs, but those arent cheap. But in that case they pretty much stay even in an end build. Getting it perma and max defenced is worth no set bonuses (other than a LOTG).

For Epic remember they dont do Containment damage so Fire and Earth arent as good as they used to be. Primal is worth a look for Power Boosted fade and Energy Torrent with a kb2kd and a Forced Feedback proc. Plus its actually a slot-cheap pick, especially if you choose Conserve Power as the initial power (Power boost doesnt need any extra slots, nor does Conserve).

Theres a chance PBed Fade could be blocked at some point because it also grants some Resist and resist powers are normally marked to ignore buffs for weird reasons (damage insps will actually also buff the resist for the entire duration if you eat em 1st)

I’m with Carnifax in recommending you go with Primal for your Epic over Fire.

Power Boosted Fade is fantastic. For example, my own setup using it gives 25% global Defense. Combined with a high recharge build and 20% Defense (which is rather shockingly easy to build for on controllers if you’re willing to sink in the time to grind for ATOs), you can be softcapped out of the gate before even using a -ToHit debuff.

For my other powers in the Primal Epic, I chose Conserve Power and Energy Torrent. Conserve Power is a circumstantially useful tool in times when you find yourself getting hit by a Malta Sapper or things go wrong and you’re trying to come back from a wipe, and it only requires its base slot to perform that function. Energy Torrent with a Knockback to Knockdown proc in it serves pretty darn well as a control in it’s own right.

You could probably go with Power Blast instead of Energy Torrent, and I tried it, but usually any time I had the option to make an ST attack, I elected to se Possess instead. It’s probably just a matter of preference.

Concerning powers that are okay to skip, I would say the four that most come to mine are Shadowy Binds, Shadow Field, Heart of Darkness, and Black Hole.

Shadowy Binds is a ST immobilize which deals some damage and has a fast recharge. There isn’t a lot about this power to hate, but frankly there isn’t a lot about this power that I especially love, either. It’s only value is as an attack, and to make it a useful attack would take more enhancement slots than I’ve ever been willing to put in it. I had Shadowy Binds briefly while leveling, but used a respec to swap it out after getting past level 10.

Shadow Field is a pretty nice power that is punished by a 240 second recharge time. For me, that’s just too long to be feasible, and in my opinion that makes this power a hard pass.

Black Hole is an AoE enemy intangibility power. It’s sort of fun to play with, but it will often only make your Scrappers and Brutes cranky while they wait to crunch up whatever you’ve shunted in there, and I would just as soon use Fearsome Gaze instead. I usually skip this buckaroo.

Heart of Darkness is a PBAoE Stun with a fairly long recharge (my build has it down to 45 seconds). I don’t like PBAoE Mez powers on controllers as a general rule (I like having the option of being able to fire them off from range), but this particular Primary/Secondary combo can use it well. Heart of Darkness can stack its magnitude with the stun in Howling Twilight, enabling you to both revise your entire team from a wipe AND stun any enemy up to the level of a Boss. It also ends up being a useful power to fire off after using Soul Absorption.

Of the four, I have Heart of Darkness 2-slotted as my level 49 power choice. It works well there for the investment.

Remember that Heart of Darkness takes PBAoE damage sets, and procs in it will have a 90% activation chance. With 5 or so procs, it's over 300 damage, and with the build being so strong defensively I feel that it can use offense more than defense. Personally I'm underslotting Darkest Night and a couple of other defensive powers in order to turn HoD into a mini-nuke.

Id also always take Heart of Darkness because you do have two reasons to be edging towards melee range : Soul drain thingy and Twilight Grasp. You need to be reasonably close for both. Yes, itd be better if it were ranged like Flashfire or earths stun but its still useful as a pbaoe.

Here's my Dark/Dark build. Its a ProcMonster build that I think I mostly lifted from other threads. I don't actually have this build completed, most of the purple IOs and sets are replaced in my currently live build with nearest non-purp equivalents until I can afford to focus a bit more money into this character.

My Dark/Dark/Primal with Super Speed and Leadership is weirdly both similar and different to yours, Avilister. I didn't push the proc route as hard as you did, and as such it has less damage overall, but I like its overall versatility.

Here's what I'm running with...I can solo +4/+8 content. Very good control. On teams without Brutes/Tanks I often run point and take alphas (that don't actually hit). This is my favorite toon by far.

A few thoughts on these comments -

Shadowy Binds, you said "to make it a useful attack would take more enhancement slots than I’ve ever been willing to put in it. "  You need only slot it with 1 accuracy and 3 damage for it to be a useful attack, just as with any other. It actually has the typical 90% base accuracy that controller single target holds & immobilizes all have. You do not need to enhance its immobilize duration for general use. As the OP noted, it's just a good single target attack.

You also said Shadow field is "punished by a 240 second recharge time" and I feel it should be pointed out that it has the standard 240 second recharge time that every single controller AoE hold has.  If you don't find that type of power useful that's fair; a lot of people stopped using them when they were all nerfed and had their durations halved and their cooldowns doubled at the same time to give us the numbers we have today (in i6 I think it was). But Shadow Field is a bit like Volcanic Gasses in that it summons a pseudopet and maintains a persistant holding field. Tactically, I grade it to be one of the best of all such holds as you can place it and draw foes in or directly cast it; I actually have it macroed to cast on my current target as if it were a standard targeted AoE though it is actually a GTAOE.

OP noted that Living Shadows was skipped for the moment but would like it soon, and in my case I made room for Living Shadows by delaying Heart of Darkness.  My feeling was that Heart of Darkness could actually wait a long time because Howling Twilight is an autohit ranged targeted stun and can lockdown the not-bosses so well. As far as stacking Heart of Darkness on top of HT, that requires moving into range (assumably well protected by Shadowfall and Fade) and really you'd only need to do that on bosses most of the time so I'd rather just spam Dark Grasp a couple times or deploy Shadow Field and use Dark Grasp. So like Mercurias mine's going to be slotted in about level 49.

Dark/Dark has so many good powers it really is hard to prioritize them though you will want almost everything. Mostly it comes down to do you team or solo because that will impact your play style and make getting the AoE immobilize and the fear a higher priority than if you were soloing. Keep in mind that with stamina inherent it really frees build slots (powers) up compared to ye olde days. Even if you take every power in your primary and secondary you'll have 2 power choices that must be filled with pool powers; for me I just took Sorcery pool, flight and arcane bolt for 1 travel power and a source of off-type damage when soloing. With the ridiculous buffs in Shadow Fall and Fade I don't feel like I need to take any leadership powers for the team or any fighting pool powers for tough and weave. I mean seriously if you need tough and weave when you're a dark controller you're doing something wrong, nothing should be able to touch you already from your inherent tohit debuffs, defense buffs, and you know, controls.

Oh yeah! You're right about the recharge time for sure. I guess I should've double-checked before I posted.

My opinion still stands with both Shadowy Binds and Shadow Field, though. Shadow Field is a good power, but I don't feel it's essential the way Fearsome Stare is. Likewise, my build for Dark/Dark is pretty tight. I can't spare three additional slots and a power choice for a ST DoT Immob. It's purely in the realm of my own preference, but I'm fine with the choice to exclude them if I have to explude something.

I run Fighting pool on mine, I took HoD fairly early, and I did not take Shadowy Binds.

I don’t get hit at all in normal content but it’s for the serious content that I took Fighting pool.

Different strokes...

I absolutely love Living Shadows...can’t imagine a dark build without it.

I also love Shadow Field. But I can see how certain play styles wouldn’t dig it.

I play in the middle of the action so Fighting pool and all the other tools are important to me.

If you want, OP, I can post screen shots of my Dark/Dark/Soul controller who I love very much.

I'd like that Arkieboy, I love looking at the different builds. I have a lvl 40 dark/dark and trying to figure out my best moves for the next 10 levels here. 🙂

Funny little mini story...me and some SG mates were doing the Mot AV mish in DA the other day. There were only 5 of us and he had it cranked it up so Mot was a 54+3.

I was the only troller (Dk/Dk), we had a SS/Inv tank, a sentinel, a water blaster and something else.

We didn't even put a dent in him but after about 20mins on him they had faceplanted faster than I could rez them. They went to the hosp and came back several times. Then entire time I never died...and a few times I was in there with him by myself. That was quite satisfying I must say.

We didn't have enough firepower to do much to him and I only have my Alpha at T4...the rest are T3. And none of my mates had T4s at all.

They were amazed when they kept coming back and I was still there debuffing the hell out of him. Apparently he saps end sometimes because my end became a problem a few times since there weren't enough enemies around to use Soul Absorption to any real benefit.

Fun fight...will return with more people eventually.

Yeah howling twilight as often as I could because my teammates were eating dirt 🙂

But he regularly shoots spikes up from the floor that hit pretty hard no matter if you are flying or not. The room is quite small and there is no escape.

We think the fact that he was in effect a 57 AV is what really kept the 5 of us from doing any real damage. I am a 50 +3 and my teammates were 50 +1 so it was a rough fight.

Here's what I'm running with...I can solo +4/+8 content. Very good control. On teams without Brutes/Tanks I often run point and take alphas (that don't actually hit). This is my favorite toon by far.

Thank you, this build is great!

I'm pretty keen to have the Soul mastery patron pool instead of Ice mastery, just for theme. Any recommendations for how to slot the powers?

Cheers! Still leveling my Dark/Dark (32), but will use this as a guide. So far he’s been really fun. I love the pet, although he does tend to use his howl a lot (which I think is a ST immobilise?).

Retired, October 2022.

Here was a take on a dark/dark/soul I worked up.  It could probably do more damage if you leveraged procs, but it should be quite tanky.
