Hi all,

I’ve settled on building either a /DA or /Invuln tanker. I was wondering if there were any secondary parings that went well?

I was looking at Savage/DA, thinking that Savage’s endurance reduction could help with how End heavy DA is.

For Invuln, I hear Dark Melee pairs well due to the -hit.

Does anyone have any insight for me?
I hear that DA shines Endgame once properly slotted  out. I’ve also seen grumblings about Invuln being hard nerfed.

At the end of the day, I just want to be a hero that is helpful to his team and can hold his own against baddies =] Elec/Shield was a consideration as well, but I hear that shines on Stalkers.

or would I just be better off rolling any of these combos as a Brute? 😂

Thanks for the input!

I would suggest Invulnerability / Dark Melee.  The synergy the two sets share is incredible.  Throw some recharge on top of it and the build becomes insanely tough.

Personally I would not use Dark Armor on a Tank.  i am maining a Dark/Dark/Soul Brute.  The stealth toggle alone is a reason not to Tank with this Armor.  Solo, sure, Tank no.  Not in my opinion.

Other than that Dark Armor is insanely powerful.  One of the reasons is it hides though.  Instead of Defense/Resist/Heal Dark armor says Stealth/Fear/Stun/resist/Best heal in the game.  and ps., Acc Debuffs.

Invulnerabilty Dark will give you a small combat heal to supllement Invul's giant heal/health boost.  It debuffs Acc to aid in layered Defenses.  It is really a beautiful pairing.  I have used it on a Brute I have mained last year when I first got back to Homecoming.  Good times.

That does sound like quite a pair! Do you feel it’s equally optimal on a Brute and tank?

First, indulge my nitpicking as I point out that Dark Armor or Invulnerability *ARE* your primaries if you're a tank.

I've taken dark/dark, invuln/dark, invuln/energy and invuln/staff to 50.  I would agree Dark Melee is a good pairing with most tank sets as it has the -to hit and a self heal that cycles pretty fast and does decent damage.  Staff is also good with invuln because invuln is a 'blend' set (both resists and defense) and staff has a defense power.  Energy Melee, on the other hand, doesn't bring as much to the table.  Sure, it stuns enemies, but that makes them wander out aura range and decreases your defense so it's a trade-off.

Another set that's good with any armor but has lousy damage - ice melee.  You can easily get Ice Patch perma (I think it only takes one recharge IO) and that will have anyone near you flopping on their backs.

So the metric here is to look for a set that either heals you, or significantly impedes the enemy ability to hit you.

Battle Axe has a ton of knockdown.  Martial Arts has defense, stun and a really fun AoE knockdown attack.  Etc.

P.S.  I see I took too long typing and Snarky got in ahead of me.  As my second paragraph notes, I agree dark melee is really good with invuln.

It is a great pairing on either.  If you want to Tank you can do it on the Brute exceptionally easily on anything besides Psychic damage Incarnate Trials.  Be sure and take Taunt.  If you want to to it on the Tank it will be even tougher.  Which is just insane, because, it is already at 11 on a scalar of 1-10 as a Brute.

Danged.  Now you got me wanting to roll a Invul/Dark Tank lol.  I may do this and slow level it Blueside.  I have never run much on Tanks and never soloed all Blueside.... WHAT COULD GO WRONG?

I'm a big fan of my Dark Armor/Stone Melee Tank. You're basically a melee-ranged AoE control machine and Stone Melee does good damage to single targets.

I always base my Invul builds off of Hyperstrike's Templates.  He has one for Tanks, Brutes, scrappers, i think all.  Then fill in your primary and go!  They are bulletproof.  just search his name.

This is perfect man. As someone who obviously loves playing Brutes, do you think that Invuln/DM ultimately has a bigger upside on a tanker? I could see the -to hit basically making you unkillable. At the same time, I could see it to really allow you to stack rage as a Brute.

If you're torn between Tanker and Brute to the point of choice paralysis, I suggest you roll one of each and play them to the mid-30's to find out which you like better.

Personally I'm disenchanted with Brutes since the tanker AoE buffs. Brutes used to be the go-to for me all the way, but the damage vs survivability gap has shifted, and since so much of the game is based around AoE damage now in fast moving teams, Tanker's huge AoE potential and high defensive potential just suit me better.  If I was going to solo a lot, I'd pick a Brute, they are I think unarguably better at solo content.  Both when built correctly will work great in any situation though.  There really aren't any powers that are so bad they are unplayable, and there are few instances where something is just so much better on one AT over another that you shouldn't ever play the inferior one (even the best examples, like Elec/Shield stalkers, still play AMAZINGLY well on Tankers, Brutes and Scrappers.)

Here's an easy way to look at it though.  If you're picking an attack set that has smaller AoE's that are included in the tanker AoE buff, you're probably going to get a much higher AoE efficiency out of a tanker with that set.  If you're picking an attack set without that, or that has AoE's that aren't all included in the tanker AoE buff (Super Strength, Mace, etc), then you may get a higher performance out of something like a Brute or Scrapper/Stalker since the AoE's will generally function very similar on either side but the benefits of AT choice will be weighted to the higher damage AT.

At the end of the day, I just want to be a hero that is helpful to his team and can hold his own against baddies =] Elec/Shield was a consideration as well, but I hear that shines on Stalkers.

Let me suggest Dark Armor / Energy Melee (self main shameless insert).

Very high single target output for a tank, strong AoE output for a tank, heavy control with Oppressive Gloom and Whirling Hands/Crash stacking disorients, great aggro control with double AoE toggles that taunt, high survivability with Dark Regen up every less than ten seconds, oppressive disorients and big resists/defense.  Damage and survivability with very good aggro control pretty much covers helpful and hold your own.

You will be unkillable as the Brute.  My opinion (and this is just my opinion) is the Tank and the Brute have two very different jobs, and although seem similar diverge madly to achieve them.  The Tanker is a melee controller.  Works better than any dominator or controller in the game.  For 17 mobs a Tanker can completely force the mobs to do one thing.  Attack the Tanker.  And they are built madly perfect for that job.  When Redside was made the Devs thought MMs would be the Redside Tanks (in bodyguard mode) and Brutes were heavy scrappers basically.  Then players got impatient and ROFLSTOMP tactics were born.

I have played the Dark/Invul Brute at incarnate.  Still have him built.  He is unkillable.  Most things do not even dent him (and I mean giant waves of +4 Incarnate Trials)  Psi damage is a problem.  It is rare.  It cannot be ignored.  Other than that its like driving a car over tin cans.  Just takes a while to get every can.

Here is the Dark Invul Brutethat is very Tanky ,   My Brutes do not take taunt.  They use ROFLSTOMP tactics.  Cannonballing into the biggest mobs they can find and letting the team figure out when to engage on their own.

I just made a DM/DA tank.  I wanted as resist / defense as I could get.  I chose dark melee because I get a heal and an end absorb power, and I'm very concerned about DA's end use.  So I came up with this build:

The only incarnate ability I have selected (for now) on this char is Cardiac Core because of End Redux.  His totals are:

Being 'that person', I'd just like to point out that for a tanker, Dark Armour and Invulnerability *ARE* Primaries....

I think someone pointed that out....  oh yeah, it was ME!  😛

First, indulge my nitpicking as I point out that Dark Armor or Invulnerability *ARE* your primaries if you're a tank.

Originally on Infinity.  I have Ironblade on every shard.  -  My only AE arc:  The Origin of Mark IV  (ID 48002)

Link to the story of Toggle Man, since I keep having to track down my original post.

Fair enough, I managed to miss that, even though I did scan through the thread to see if anyone had made the point yet.  Mea culpa.

For me personally Ive taken  a D3 tanks and scrapper all the way to the top and 2 Invuln SS tanks and an SS Invuln brute up a ways

SS is never a bad combo with Invuln and invuln works well with Mace and Axe

Dark is end hungry but works well with nearly any power primary but dark mellee as its partner is where it shines

My Dear you deserve the services of a great wizard but youll have to settle for the aid of a second rate pick pocket

~Schmendrick

So you mean you'll put down your rock, and I'll put down my sword; and we'll try and kill each other like civilized people?
