Never have been sure how the Z axis ended up in the middle; I assume it's something integral to the original engine. ETA: two tricks: Set a 0-0-0 thumbtack in a zone and make a mental note of where that "center" is; it can help you navigate using seat-of-the pants coordinates. And in a hurry, you can often just use 0 for the Z coordinate and still get where you're going.
