Ok so today I had a "tips" mission to "Save the Longbow Agent!"  after clearing everything the mission changed to leading the agent out of the mission... is this NPC ment to be walking or do I have a setting messed up someplace?  Leader her out was a royal pain and took longer than clearing the mission did lol.

were you using stealth or any other form of invisibility? If they can't see you they won't follow you.

That's the only reason I can think immediately.

There's a fine line between a numerator and a denominator but only a fraction of people understand that.

Yeah... kind of a pain if you're playing a Stalker, that, though I DO get the reasoning. Would be pretty weird if you could just stealth-stroll outta there with the hostage in tow while all the enemies either ignored them or pointlessly attacked the invincible NPC. (Oh, note though - in missions where your escort is a COMBATANT, and thus a valid target, they WILL follow you even if stealthed... and then get immediately murdered by the first mob you run across since they'll all target the perfectly-visible escort.)

Other than that - and, of course, the possibility that OP has encountered a bug or glitch - the most likely explanation is simply that you're not staying close enough to the escort. They can easily get stuck on geometry for a while, PARTICULARLY while going up or down inclines or stairs, and if you get too far away, they'll stop following. In some cases, they'll even turn around at that point and start running back to where you found them...

Blue side: When I escort, I turn off all stealth and running speed increasing powers. Walk to the door.

Red Side: When I kidnap. Same, but the NPC is slower and mouths off a lot, trying to get the rescue party to appear. It's designed that way.

Imagine if the NPCs exercised rational self-preservation judgement and didn't jump off of balconies and such to follow you, like you would have to escort them down those flights of convoluted stairs.

Escort pain = OG Positron "Rescue the Workers" Escort Mission.

Girls of Nukem High - Excelsior - Tempus Fabulous, Flattery, Jennifer Chilly, Betty Beatdown, Totally Cali, Two Gun Trixie

Babes of War - Excelsior - High Beam (Yay), Di Di Guns, Runeslinger, Munitions Mistress, Tideway, Hard Melody, Blue Aria

Many alts and lots of fun.  Thank you Name Release For letting me get my OG main back!

I often do short spurts of speed, then look back to see if the fool is still following.  I've often I think seen them run to catch up with me when I'm stretching that rubber band, but then walk once they get closer.  Notice I didn't say "when they catch up to me," they seem to start walking fairly fair away.

I like to do escort missions with stealth sometimes.  You can only move like four steps at a time without the NPC losing you and it takes forever.

But it's amusing to see all the enemies stand by idly and watch their captive slowly shuffle away.

Read this again.  It is the only “ fast” way

Am I misunderstanding the op, I read this as they followed at walk speed instead of running to follow.

No, you read it right.  And I believe Clave Dark 5 accurately diagnosed why.

If you walk slowly in front of an NPC follower they will lazily stroll.  Only when you get out toward the edge of your tether do they act motivated to move

Besides the stealth thing (undoubtedly accurate, at least for most such hassles), I do seem to recall some missions and some eras of hostage missions being bugged; I may have had one myself where the hostage just would not follow me for more than a few feet before going back to square one. I think I had to drop that mish.

most of the bugs involve really crap tracking.  Desdemona in Incarnate Trials can surprisingly (for late game code) still get her heel stuck in a train track.  The KHTF is/was/will always be a cave crap shoot.

Ah thank you.

I typically turn on the mini map, turn to face the NPC, and walk backwards out while looking at them. If sprint is not on you don't outpace them that way.

I can confirm this because his wife told me that it's true! 🤯

Had to rescue three Goldbrickers for Golden Roller just now. The important one git hard stuck in a wall.  I was getting nervous but by moving in various directions and a lot of lick he just popped out. Once the get hung up in the geometry it is a dice roll
