 I started an ars/kin got him to 25 and was looking over build when it hit me.

 

How do I set up containment on av's????

The holds and flash bang are your best bet within the primary. But, there are multiple secondaries that offer one or more of stuns, holds, and/or immobilizes. 

 

Arsenal control is still quite strong, though, as was mentioned earlier.

You don't.  Arse Control is a half-baked set, built and tested primarily on Doms, and the Devs in charge of it don't care about you having Immobs or any way to reliably set up Containment on AVs.  You are punished for playing the set at all, doubly punished on Controllers.

If you find this to be a significant issue, be more active during the next Open Beta testing period and make your concerns known on the Focused Feedback Threads.  This is how we're supposed to bring up issues like this (I did), and get them changed (they didn't listen).

It isn't. Did you know that almost every Arsenal Control power is a pet that is unaffected by your set bonuses, and that they aren't autohit? Do you know that this makes the set flounder violently against any enemies that are three or more levels above you? It is a set that needs +5 boosted purple set levels of accuracy to even function meaningfully on cimerorans.

Arsenal Control is a set that is only strong against the weakest, most common enemy groups and at low levels where the poor base Acc of the pseudopets and patches isn't visibly harming you. I mean, dude, the -To Hit portion of Smoke Cannister is not paired with the Autohit -Perception component of the power, no,

 

THE -TO HIT DEBUFF IN ARSENAL CONTROL! IS! TIED TO THE CONFUSE HITTING!

 

Just to offer some insight. This set is genuinely bad, for reasons beyond the lack of an AOE Immob.

Given that the OP apparently values AV hunting it seems unfortunate that they gave up the taunting tank of a pet in arsenal control in exchange for the more fragile imps in fire control, thereby making AV hunting potentially more challenging.  

Incidentally, and this is not to put pressure on Frosticus, since arsenal control went live I've been expecting videos by Frosticus featuring arsenal control being used to defeat AVs. AV hunting is something Frosticus seems to enjoy and arsenal control is a set that has a very tough pet with a taunt to make that easier.

I'm not sure if I'm going to do videos. I leveled up my arse/thorn dom, have it halfway incarnated and tbh it plays so similar to my earth dom that I'm not sure I have the motivation to put the hours in like it did for earth (so many hrs), plus for AV's /thorny definitely isn't /psi. Originally my earth/psi was a proof of concept to show that doms can be built to handle lvl54 AVs without insp/temps/lore as no one seemed to be doing that.

 

I've played around a bit on test server with arse/psi (built same as my earth/psi) maybe I'll toss up vid or two as a comparison.

Figured you'd be experimenting with it. Totally understandable that if it's quite similar to earth that motivation to go through the same paces wouldn't be that high.

I just tossed up a vid of an arse dom cakewalking the Hydra Pylons in the apex TF. Certainly not the only dom that can do it, but among the easiest.

Added a bonus vid vs Clockwork King AV. Trollers of course would have an even easier time with AVs with any number of secondaries at play.

Nice video, shows the resilience of the set.

Had been considering making an arsenal / dark / psi controller. Could drop the fighting pool and still softcap ranged defense with fade, get good other positionals, have good resists, have mez protection, pick up fold space, take the tri-gun and for the clear majority of content team with zero concern for whether or not a tank or any melee were present. Could easily function as the alpha taker and mob positioning specialist. Tri-gun would taunt hard targets. 

The main hesitation is that I have a gravity / dark / psi controller with a similar playstyle, albeit with a more fragile pet that doesn't taunt.

So ARS is ok on a DOM. where containment ISNT an issue for needed dps goals.  gotcha

 

Bringing up dom is sidestepping the issue of containment.

 

Yes the pet is awesome but thats it .

Containment is really only an issue against AVs and hardmode (the latter is something all trollers have to circumvent) as you have tools to set it up against most regular content. 

In exchange you have one of the only truly useful t9 pets and a fairly unique (primary) damage debuff that tends to be more useful in the above situations than things like tohit debuffs found in other primaries.

 

No set excels at everything.

If it's not too much trouble - how would you soak the alpha in something like a 54x8 TF/SF on an Arsenal controller?  Is that all down to /dark's Fade?  If I could soak an alpha my Ars/Kin would feel damn near perfect, but as it is the smoke's confuse seems to agro targets who have not yet noticed my team, and when they start returning fire, they're aiming at me, not my tanky pet.  Got up to 50 and ready to start unlocking incarnates and patron pools, still working on what to IO and budget for, but I've not been able to soak a serious alpha strike on that toon.

Arsenal control has cloaking device, which makes an arsenal controller invisible to most enemies. That allows time in most situations to lay down an AOE control as an alpha, substantially reducing the number of incoming attacks. High defense totals greatly reduce the percentage of incoming attacks that actually get through, and good resistances (for most resistances, at least) significantly reduce the damage received from attacks that make it through.

Fade helps with defense totals and resistances, as well as with increasing resistance to defense debuffs, all of which help to reduce incoming damage.

Regarding the OP:

once you get into incarnate, Hybrid /Control has an immob option which seems to work pretty well. Very late in the build of course. 🙂
