Futuregirl Posted May 3 Posted May 3 My vision isn't the greatest, so I've enlarged the UI, but even so, the massive black border around maps prevents me from filling the map window with the map. Filling the whole window with the map would also make it easier to hover over the icon I am interested for more info since they would be spread out a little more. In the snapshot reducing the height or width of the map window reduces the size of the map (as opposed to cropping out some of the black border). I would appreciate this fix very much, as I'm sure many others would, too. 1
Futuregirl Posted May 3 Author Posted May 3 I should mention that it is an even more pointed problem on a map like Independence Port where the window has to be very WIDE to make the map fill the window's vertical space.
Rudra Posted May 3 Posted May 3 (edited) Use the map zoom. Edited May 3 by Rudra Edited to add forgotten 2nd zoom screen capture. 1
Duckbutler Posted May 3 Posted May 3 You have my condolences on the vision problems. I've had a medical issue crop up in the last year that's affecting my eyes and it's not fun. Some of the game's two-tone text as well as the fuscia color on purple con enemies can be hard on my eyes. Map zoom should be a slider on the right side of the map. Why do I not see it in the screenshot? Is that because the map window has been expanded so much?
AboveTheChemist Posted May 3 Posted May 3 Just now, Duckbutler said: Map zoom should be a slider on the right side of the map. Why do I not see it in the screenshot? I noticed that as well and was just about to post about it. I don't think it is a window size issue because I frequently expand the map window to fill nearly the entire screen when I am working on map mod updates, and the zoom slider has never disappeared on me before. Unfortunately I don't have any explanation as to why the zoom slider appear to be missing. Futuregirl Posted May 3 Author Posted May 3 (edited) I've never seen a slider at any size map. Thanks for telling me there is one for some people. I tried turning off my UI scaling as well as changing my graphics mode (4k vs 2k, Windowed, Borderless, etc.) and it still isn't there. I did discover that the worst behavior was with "Borderless (Monitor 1)" which is what I was using. The big black border is more controllable if I switch to another mode (don't need a huge width to see all of Independence Port's height). I'll report the lack of slider as a bug as well as the bad behavior with the "Borderless (Monitor 1)" graphics mode. I don't know what else to try to get a slider to appear. However, the point is somewhat moot. Without a zoom modification, the default should be that the map fills the window as much as possible while retaining its aspect ratio. Edited May 3 by Futuregirl
Greycat Posted May 3 Posted May 3 (edited) Yeah, I just ran around a few zones, making sure to include founders falls (the map in question here,) and they all had the zoom slider on the right. Think my next steps would be "Zone, see if it changes. If not, log off/on. If that still doesn't do it, verify your files from the launcher." Edit: Since the OP replied - I actually wouldn' twant it to fill the window, primarily because of the way it already acts in some maps (or has, I can't recall if that was fixed.) I tend to associate it with Cimerora maps, since that's where I see it most, where the map *starts out* already too zoomed in. One of the more annoying little things to me... I'd hate to have it do that everywhere. Especially if you can't zoom out because it's bugged like what you're seeing. No slider exists for me. I have yet to try reinstalling the game, although it shouldn't be necessary if "verify" works. I don't believe no black border would be attractive, but the way it is now is "broken." Fixing the whole issue with the map filling the map window would also fix the Cimerora map being too zoomed in. Lunar Ronin Posted May 3 Posted May 3 Out of curiosity, which launcher are you using? Tequila, Sweet Tea, Homecoming launcher, something else? Are you using any mods at all? If so, which?
Futuregirl Posted May 3 Author Posted May 3 That's a good question. I am using the one that installs with Homecoming. I'm not using any mods.
AboveTheChemist Posted May 3 Posted May 3 (edited) Part of the issue regarding the black border is that the underlying image files are constrained to dimensions that are powers of two, typically 512 or 1024 pixels. CoH zones are all different shapes and sizes and don't necessarily fill all the space on that canvas completely. Further, each pixel on a given map represents either 10, 15, or 20 feet (approximately) in-game depending on the particular map (with a few oddball zones). For example, here is the map image for Founders Falls: It is 1024x1024 pixels, and each pixel represents approximately 10 feet in game. Cropping that image to 512x512 results in insufficient space for the actual game map. Theoretically you might be able to crop it to 512x512 and lower the pixel resolution to 15 feet in order to get it to fit, but you would likely end up with a worse quality map, and you would still have a black border. I don't know how zone maps were/are created so something like that might not even be feasible. Such a change would also likely require re-calibrating all the static map markers (like contacts and stores) and how dynamic map markers (like player markers) move across the map, which might not be a trivial task. Rudra Posted May 3 Posted May 3 Looking at my response, where did my screen captures go?! Anyway.... 2 hours ago, Futuregirl said: I've never seen a slider at any size map. I saw when I was checking the maps for my 1st post on here that if I separated the map from the the nav bar and then re-sized it, I had no zoom slider. After I re-connected the map to the nav bar (and shrunk it back down), I had the zoom slider again. Zooming in to any degree and then disconnecting the map from the nav bar retained the zoom slider. I don't know if that was just a quick glitch or if that applies to everyone, but return your map to normal size and re-attach it to your nav bar. Then adjust zoom slightly and detach if you desire. Or just expand the map window while it remains connected to the nav tray.

I always disconnect my map right away and stick it in the upper right hand corner, just as an aside, and don't think I've ever not had a zoom slider. But this might be enough for it to reset (or whatever) the window to give the zoom control back. 1 Kheldian Lore and Backstory Guide 2.0: HC edition Out to EAT : A look at Epic ATs - what is, could have been, and never was Want 20 merits? Futuregirl Posted May 3 Author Posted May 3 Perhaps there is an options setting that I changed without realizing its effects. As it is, detaching and resizing the map doesn't make a slider appear.

Edit: The zoom slider is actually in your 1st pic too. You just moved the map so the bar is at the very edge of your screen. Edited May 3 by Rudra
