Glubba Posted November 21 Posted November 21 Hello All! I've been playing City of Heroes on and off since it went live. I have a few level 50 characters and around 100 alts ranging from levels 2 to 49. My notable characters include a level 50 Stalker, Warshade, Defender, and Fire Farmer. While I’ve never been particularly drawn to Blasters, I love the movie "Equilibrium." I know this may not be an original idea, but I want to create a character modeled after John Preston, the main character from the film. My question for you vet blasters is: what would be a good secondary for this character? Initially, I considered Martial Combat, but since they don’t really use melee attacks in the movie, I shifted my thinking to Temporal Manipulation. This seems to fit better because the powers feel more like "innate" abilities, enhancing speed for me and slowing down my enemies. I would love to hear about Dual Pistols builds you’ve enjoyed that seem to work well together or synergize. I’m trying to avoid more elemental secondaries since they don’t really fit my theme. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! I'm familiar with Mids, so I don't necessarily need a specific build, just some recommendations for funsies. Thanks all!
Glubba Posted November 21 Author Posted November 21 @OctogoatFor some reason, Sent didn't even cross my mind. that's a great idea, Thank you!
Frozen Burn Posted November 22 Posted November 22 I've paired DP with /Mental, /Sonic, and /Ninja. Love them all. With DP, I look for secondaries with PBAOEs that will go well with the DP PBAOE nuke. There are some great elemental secondaries that pair really well, but since we're avoiding those, yeah.... /Martial and /Temporal would great pairings as well.
Without_Pause Posted November 22 Posted November 22 I've enjoyed my DP/martial. Zoom in and PBAoE away. 1 Top 10 Most Fun 50s. 1. Without Mercy: Claws/ea Scrapper. 2. Outsmart: Fort 3. Sneakers: Stj/ea Stalker. 4. Emma Strange: Ill/dark Controller. 5. Project Next: Ice/stone Brute. 6. Waterpark: Water/temp Blaster. 6. Mighty Matt: Rad/bio Brute. 7. Without Hesitation: Claws/sr Scrapper. 8. Within Reach: Axe/stone Brute. 9. Without Pause: Claws/wp Brute. 10. Chasing Fireworks: Fire/time Controller. "Downtime is for mortals. Debt is temporary. Fame is forever."
Thraxen Posted November 22 Posted November 22 Sr sent is the correct answer. Can take flurry but that was more for matrix rip off for me. 1
ZorkNemesis Posted November 23 Posted November 23 (edited) I did DP/Electric with a focus on blapping. Took Spring Attack to jump into fights and turned Lightning Clap into a minor proc bomb, along with Thunder Strike and Hail of Bullets. A bit dangerous but it was still fun diving into crowds with bullets and sparks in all directions. EDIT: Didn't notice you said no elemental secondaries so this probably isn't your cup of tea. Though I do think if you wanted a tech-styled character electrical powers are easier to justify compared to other elemental effects. ShimmerDoll Posted November 23 Posted November 23 (edited) Having both a dual pistols sentinel and blaster, the blaster with martial is much more fun to play (/martial or ninja on blasters makes anything fun). It's one of the few blasters that I don't die on even when I'm playing recklessly, and the speed, in regards to getting through anything is unmatched due to the secondary being martial combat. I don't even use the exact min/max build anymore, but an actual build I find way more fun and that character has become my main, nearing 1000 veteran levels, 99% solo player. Of the 169 characters I've made, it's easily the fastest and most fun playstyle in my opinion. The sentinel version of dual pistols is much more relaxed and does less damage by quite a bit and both have sets. I do like the sentinel too but as far as sentinels go (at 50+) my electric/electric sentinel outperforms the dual pistols sentinel, and the electric sentinel is only in the process of getting all it's sets (about half right now). The blaster version flows nicely in combat and is quite fun to play. If you like clearing things quickly, teleporting from enemy to enemy and highspeed/intense playstyles the blaster version is the way to go. Sentinel is more chill. and I am a huge fan of Equilibrium. They did use the back of the guns in many melee fights in that film, you can just pretend you're a more agile version of Preston, since there's a couple kicks. Edited November 23 by ShimmerDoll 1 1
Lockpick Posted November 25 Posted November 25 You could also consider a DP / Ninja Training Blaster. Equilibrium did have a sword fight at the end. Although my DP / MC character is an Equilibrium / 97 Steps homage character.
High_Beam Posted November 25 Posted November 25 Funny how such a bad movie has become so iconic ; style over substance. And yet it was what I thought of with my first DP/MC Blaster. 1 Girls of Nukem High - Excelsior - Tempus Fabulous, Flattery, Jennifer Chilly, Betty Beatdown, Totally Cali, Two Gun Trixie Babes of War - Excelsior - High Beam (Yay), Di Di Guns, Runeslinger, Munitions Mistress, Tideway, Hard Melody, Blue Aria Many alts and lots of fun. Thank you Name Release For letting me get my OG main back!

The DP/Martial blaster sounds absolutely amazing, do you happen to have a mids for that build? I've been thinking about coming back to the game for a minute, and the haven't ever played DP but always thought they would be super satisfying.
ScarySai Posted December 8 Posted December 8 I've tried them all, dp/martial was fun but pretty weak, dp/ninja handles DP's weaknesses the best, but you need to eat reds and use amps to get the most of it.
kelika2 Posted December 9 Posted December 9 Blaster: Pistol/tactical arrow - absolute beast pistol/fire - pbaoe fun pistol/ice - weak pistol/energy - nice, just pistols and like two utility things pistol/psi - more aoe pistol/martial - is ok Sentinel: Pistol/fire - pbaoe fun, theme stacking, dot stacking Pistol/bio - most toxic damage in the game Corr: Pistol/poison - thought it was ganna be cool but it isnt. nox gas and hail is fun

Close range shots (nothing outside of normal melee combat range) and pistol whipping for the win. I do love a dual pistol/martial arts blaster though. Lots of fun. Knock enemies flying with ki push and blast them in the air when they are in "bullet time". If someone posts a reply quoting me and I don't reply, they may be on ignore. (It seems I'm involved with so much at this point that I may not be able to easily retrieve access to all the notifications) Some players know that I have them on ignore and are likely to make posts knowing that is the case. But the fact that I have them on ignore won't stop some of them from bullying and harassing people, because some of them love to do it. There is a group that have banded together to target forum posters they don't like. They think that this behavior is acceptable. Ignore (in the forums) and /ignore (in-game) are tools to improve your gaming experience. Don't feel bad about using them.
Bananiac Posted Monday at 10:35 AM Posted Monday at 10:35 AM (edited) Has been called enough times before, but I will nonetheless come here and second the DP/Martial Combat Blaster. This to me has the absolute closest feel like Gun Kata gameplay that I have seen. Edited Monday at 10:36 AM by Bananiac That incident involving a nuclear accelerator and a banana… You know… I REALLY don't wanna talk about it!
ScarySai Posted Monday at 10:06 PM Posted Monday at 10:06 PM (edited) Expanding on the previous post, DP's major weakness is it's single target, assuming you've taken the liberty to proc it out and patch out some of it's other issues. Ninja will cover that the best, but without a build up you really gotta chomp reds to get value out of it. Edited Tuesday at 04:58 PM by ScarySai
