Snarky Posted December 12 Posted December 12 considering rebuilding for placate. is this a worthwhile endeavor? CoH Wiki: Placate Placate is as it sounds - an enemy who is placated cannot attack the Stalker which placated it for a set period of time (and loses interest in the Stalker as well) unless the Stalker decides to follow up with attacks which will immediately break Placate. It can be used to escape from foes who prove a challenge, allowing the Stalker to regroup or flee, or to take advantage of the fact that Placate will place the Stalker in Hide, allowing him to immediately follow up with a triple-damage Assassin's Strike or other attacks for double-damage if it is not available.
Uncle Shags Posted December 13 Posted December 13 I have one stalker with it and one without. On one the build was too tight and couldn't fit it. The other one used it for the crit. If you time it right you can get some nice burst. I suppose it's good for survival too, but I found on teams I never had survival issues. I just never got much aggro, and what I did aggro was gone quick. 1
Onlyasandwich Posted December 13 Posted December 13 Placate is pretty excellent now. It's fast enough to be a good damage gain even if just using it for crits. Sure you get ato procs for crits too, but both is even better. It also works really well to keep runners to a minimum. Otherwise big groups have a tendency to scatter after your nasty big critting alpha strike. As a survival tool it can be nice at low levels or as an emergency button when everything goes wrong. I mostly use it for offense. 1 1
StrikerFox Posted December 13 Posted December 13 It probably depends on playstyle, build, solo, team, difficulty etc. I usually try to take Placate just to feel less like a Scrapper but it's usually my most expendable power. When I do take it, it sits in the power tray, unused most of the time. A lot of missions have glowies with enemies nearby. If trying to speed through it, Placate the enemies and grab the glowie. They won't notice you're there (Even in melee range). Or enemies that detect stealth/invisibility like Rikti Drones, Turrets and Overseers, can be placated as well to avoid detection. The only Stalker primary where Placate is a must have is Dual Blades. Just so the Empower combo is available. 1
Uun Posted December 13 Posted December 13 Placate was changed in i27p3, becoming a 15 ft radius targeted AoE that hits up to 5 targets. It's also autohit. It's pretty useful and doesn't require any slots. 1 Uuniverse
Frosticus Posted December 13 Posted December 13 Yes take and use placate a lot. It is both an offensive and defensive boon. Huge solo/small team, still really good on a full team. Here's a quick demo showing how you can use it to gain an advantage. *it's an overload build so probably didn't need to use it defensively here. 1 2 Earth/Psi Dom - AV killer Arsenal/Sav Dom - AV Killer Poison - a guide to the most deadly poisons
tidge Posted December 14 Posted December 14 On my new Stalkers, I always try to take Placate (since the rework). On about half of my pre-rework Stalkers I have rebuilt with it, on the other half I like how they play without it, and those builds are pretty tight so they did not get reworked. While leveling up, I try to include Placate reasonably early... I find this helps me get a feel for using it. The base recharge time should be only two-thirds as long as a Build Up, so with minimal slots I find it to be a good power to use while leveling. 1
Jacke Posted December 14 Posted December 14 Current Placate is also a 15ft radius AoE with 5 max targets with a Mag4 20.5s Placate. https://cod.uberguy.net/html/power.html?power=stalker_melee.dark_melee.placate&at=stalker 1 Remember! Kaika Posted Tuesday at 11:14 PM Posted Tuesday at 11:14 PM Placate in my experience is worth it on a lower recharge build and not really worth it on a higher recharge build. While it's certainly received some fairly significant buffs you have to remember that all it grants you offensively is a crit, this is something you can already get from two other sources: The Rehide ATO and random crit chance. With the rehide ATO taking care of most of your force crits needs, you usually would only need it when its on its internal 10 second cooldown, which sorta limits the use of placate to when its down or the rare instances when it does proc. On top of that if your recharge is high enough to get a tight rotation of strong attacks placate, even with its short animation time can often cause you to either drop one of your attacks, losing a possible stack of assassin's focus, or delaying AS, your strongest attack by far, neither of which are generally good options. You also have to take the procs and the random crit chance into account, people tend to think of placate as 100% damage boost on the next attack but in reality its a 90-70% due to scaling random crit chance to even less if you are dealing with attacks with damage procs in them, as the procs are unaffected by crits. In lower level, or low recharge builds, placate is amazing but in higher end builds its only really that useful as a utility tool. I could certainly see some scenarios where it could be possibly be a gain (Total focus for the double ET, come to mind but I haven't ran the math) but in my experience it isn't really worth it as a damage tool in most high end stalker builds. As utility though, the ability to "turn off enemies" can be very nice, but on the higher end it's generally best as just a utility, at least from my expirence. And to answer the question about placate-> AS: NO it's bad. AS from hide deals about the same DPS as quick AS does when it does not crit, meaning that any chance of quick AS critting puts it well above AS from hide and thats before adding placate into the mix, the assassin's focus mechanic is there for a reason. Still worth using to start a fight if you have time, or if you REALLY need the fear effect. JasperStone Posted Thursday at 02:03 PM Posted Thursday at 02:03 PM I'm running an Ice/Ice/Ice stalker at the moment. First time I skipped it ... and miss it. A lot.
