dmaker
If I'm in a meeting and faceplant a few times and want to crank down my difficulty a bit, when does that come into play? If I exit the map and return, will it be easier?
Clave Dark 5
I believe you have to exit and reset the mission for it to take effect. dmaker
How do you reset a mission? Not sure, exactly what that means. I always thought leaving the map would do that.
TheOtherTed
Click the Mission button under the compass at the top of the screen, click on any other mission, then click "Select task." That will reset the previously active mission. If you don't have any other missions, then get one. ;) A radio (or television) mission will do the trick just as well as a contact mission. justicebeliever
To change your difficulty, click the little chat button next to you chat box. Go to Set Notoriety. There you can set the level of mobs compared to your own (mobs will usually be anywhere from at your level to one over at the “0” level difficulty. Go to -1 means mobs will be one level below to the same level difficulty). Remember bosses at your level will show orange. You can also change how many mobs you face. At x2, you will face mobs as if you were a team of 2. You can choose if you want bosses to spawn in missions as well. Some missions will have a boss no matter what. Later on in the game you will some Arch Villains in your missions. The last option on Set Notoriety allows you to scale those down to Elite Bosses, which are harder than regular bosses, but easier than Arch Villains. If you want to change these settings after starting a mission, then you must go to the mission exit and leave the mission. Then make your changes and select a different mission. This will reset the mission, but at the new difficulty. Robotech_Master
Clearly, you have far more interesting meetings than I do. If you liked what I had to say, please check out my City of Heroes guides!

Queen Nefertiti
There is also the option of logging out and logging back in again if you don't want have a mission to change to, or don't want to pick a mission from the radio/ newspaper. That will normally reset the mission you are currently in. Missions "set in stone" as soon as someone enters the door, so that is why you sometimes get team leaders telling people to come out if they are still searching for more to fill the team. If you go in when there are 4 team mates and then fill the team to 8, it won't scale up to accommodate the new team members. The team leader has to reset the mission by picking a new one then going back to the old one. I've been in many teams where the difficulty has been so easy or so hard a team decision has been made to reset and alter the difficulty. If everything is grey and green, or everything is purple and the whole team wipes before you leave the first room then changing the settings can help. Hopeling
You can also use /leaveteam to reset the active mission (and leave the map, if you're on it). This won't work on an actual team or in TF/flashback mode though: the command works fine, but it'll leave the team or bring up the prompt to quit the TF instead of resetting just the one mission. For those, you'll have to relog or select another mission as active.
Vanden
Difficulty changes take effect immediately, but they won't affect enemies that have already spawned. Most enemies spawn as soon as you enter the mission, but there are some things like ambushes that spawn after and could potentially spawn for a different difficulty setting.
