I'm only an occasional badge-r, but I needed three more for a 100 accolade so I was snagging exploration badges in Talos. My mini-game is to try and spot the badge marker before I trigger it. So, the badge on the freighter in Talos... Whitecap. I coudn't find a badge marker anywhere, on top of the superstructure or on any of the ledges below. Is this a bug, a feature, a hallucination, or what?

Well, grumble. I've posted a few times about using /visscale to set a better distance range, balanced between your system's capabilities and your visual pleasure. Default is 2, and setting it just a little higher really reduces the "continually appearing objects" mode when you're moving fast. So I added F10 = visscale 10 to my bind sets and got in the habit of whacking it at the beginning of each session. Then I notice it wasn't resetting to default any more, so one setting was perma; I erased the bind. Now it's back to defaulting to 2 with every session. Is it perma or not, and why does its status keep changing?

So, running the Steel Canyon bank mission from the detective in IP (Davids?) And my freakin' zombies are repeatedly attacking empty air with everything they've got. Both times were in the bank lobby, so I don't know if it was the same spot or phantom foe, but it was half-funny, half-exasperating.

Add me to this list. I've run several Stalkers on HC, and my current one (Psi/SR) has "non hits" pretty regularly. Sound, reaction, everything as if the Assassin Strike hit, but no damage. Nothing fancy in the build, no IOs. Hadn't thought to report it.

Gunner's Guide to Modern Teleport Powers (post-I27)
Shenanigunner replied to Shenanigunner's topic in Guides
Okay, thanks. I've gotten hints that not all transit missions are the same, so I can note that. Trying to snag a BT mission on my main, which is the only one that has all the transporters. Hopefully I will be able to run through the set and see which ones pretend to be trains.- 18 replies

How odd of you. 😛 Back to topic, I guess if someone is going to upgrade to an ARM Mac as their only system... compatibility of the game matters. But I'd guess anyone working with that level of hardware has at least one other system, IntelMac or even Winders, for backup and alternate apps. So hopefully the hardware shift won't really impact any Mac players.

Surface devices (Surfaces? Surfi?) are not the whole of "desktop" systems on the WinTel side. Although MS has annoyingly shoved mobile/Surface features into the full desktop version of Win10 — it's irritating to have to actively disable things like touch and pop-up keyboards on an app installed on a desktop system — I don't see any plans to completely drop desktop-as-desktop versions of the OS. This will deeply, deeply shock the under-30 crowd, but: No, kids, you can't do everything on a mobile device. No, kids, the touch-interface mode is not best for all C/H interaction. No, kids, a laptop is not the only/best/optimal format for getting work done day in and day out. MS seems to retain some of this understanding. Apple's move to "computers are just mobile devices you can't carry easily" thinking, to me, means they really, really don't want to be in the computer business any more. As I said, what "computer" company runs high-budget ads basically crapping on the idea of computers, because gosh, you can run whole companies and do high-end graphics, video production and day-in-day-out work on a tablet? 😛 Not bashing Apple, but they all but conceded the work-computer market a long time ago and have clearly lost the last bit of interest in favor of their (excellent) mobile technology.

Not sure if this addresses the topic, but I've always thought that the "character boxes" were as much to prevent inappropriate visuals for a T-rated game as anything else. You simply can't get "cuddly" in any way, friendly or teabagging. I have to think that was deliberate. And I am extremely irritated at War Witch's current location as a result. For whatever reason, her placement had almost no character distance box, and if you stood back to back with her and hit /em walllean, you could do a very convincing impression of a yummy embrace. She's too darned close to the wall in her new location. <pout>

I think the only things I could say (and already typed and deleted) would be taken as or spark yet another round of platform flamewars. I'll just say that there comes a time when a maker clearly doesn't care about its legacy users, and that's the time to stop investing no matter how large the sunk costs. (Speaking from 30 years in graphics, imaging, CAD, video, music/audio production—both as user and systems consultant.) Seems like keeping an Intel Mac or two around to run legacy apps and beat up Arachnos is a perfectly viable strategy for quite some time. 🙂

Weekly Discussion 86: Base Building Wish List
Shenanigunner replied to GM ColdSpark's topic in General Discussion
I dunno how hard this is (probably either trivial or geared right to the deepest game code...) but it is mildly frustrating not to be able to emerge from portals or med units facing any way but west(?). Pointable portin' in, yep! -
Add a red neck and Blue Ribbon beer, and you're all set to go with a Johnny Russell toon!

Chat shortcuts/hotkeys not loading properly
Shenanigunner replied to Menelruin's topic in Bug Reports
ALL game keys are binds. You can erase all of them if you choose. More to the point, you can change or rebind them with few limitations. It sounds like something has changed your local client's keybinds, or some disconnect has arisen between default binds an menu hotkeys. Rebind the keys that are most comfortable for you... or even improve the default (and often 'orribly outdated) binds! -
I am sorry to hear all of this, just as one player to others. But two thoughts occur to me. The first is that expecting ANY 16-year-old game to run on new platforms is a bit... optimistic. There are whole generations of Windows games that won't run on Wi7-10 without converters, OS emulators, etc. Going from 2006 Windows to 2021 Mac is... extreme in any case. The other is that no one has to buy a new ARM Mac, and might want to think the investment through on many points besides the pinnacle one of CoH compatibility. ( 😜 ) After all, Apple has a long history of increasingly distancing from "computers" — seen any of the recent iPad ads, where the bright young spark changing the world doesn't even know what a "computer" is? — and absolutely every argument of the past 30 years aside (please!) it might be time to sunset Macs/MacOS and the "you really just want a big mobile device on your desk" mentality and future.

My opinion from both player and bind/macro developer experience is that there is no satisfying, seamless way to use controllers with CoH. Some WASD games are more adaptable to joysticks, but the need to be able to fire 5-10 powers fast and selectively means the limited controls of a controller will never be a good solution. For what it's worth, though, I developed an extensive button-mapping tool that can be used to build a comprehensive bind set for any controller. It's on the website, although slightly out of date with the I27 changes. Despite much time and effort, and love for controller games (although they didn't exist for the first half of my gaming career...), I never found any combination of binds that make my DS4 a really viable alternative to key-bashing. Maybe that's why I focus so much on streamlined binds and macros, to make the keyboarding as efficient and seamless as possible... 'cuz there ain't really no option.

Weekly Discussion 86: Base Building Wish List

I didn't have too much trouble assembling my showers; you just have to set "Attach to Wall" for the grips, knob, heads, etc. If what you mean is default these items to Wall... sure. Seems like a trivial database cleanup. ETA: There are a lot of good base-building pages etc. but for a solid description of the keys, slash commands and temporary bindfile modifications, see Ref A.2 in the Guide (link below). You can make portals nearly invisible by embedding them in walls, especially the dark swirly one (can't recall which name it has). The beacons can be similarly embedded within the wall or raised floor. You can experiment with how deeply to set them (or by putting things like tapestries over them) before they can't be clicked any more. -

Board Transit mission, level 42?
Shenanigunner replied to Shenanigunner's topic in General Discussion
Not sure if I need to own it. I can work through a mission arc if I have to, but a TF might be more of a PITA than I want. This is my only alt with all the 'porters, so it has to be him. Any earlier Ouro mission would be fine if it allows "normal" entry using transit and not through the crystal. -
I need a 'Board Transit' mission for my 42 blueside tank, so that I can test some teleport functions. Can anyone point me to a contact who might give one right off, or at least within one or two missions?

Weekly Discussion 86: Base Building Wish List
Shenanigunner replied to GM ColdSpark's topic in General Discussion
Maybe. But the biggest plot is pretty damned big. And you can just combine accounts with shared teleport macros, right? ETA: the notion of pre-configured teleport destinations could be implemented to allow seamless base-sharing. -

Base raiding: IMVHO, a good notion that never worked out and can't really be fit into the existing game. It would really be... almost a whole game in itself, or a defined sub-game. IF the devs ever find themselves bored and lacking something to do, building out a whole new module with a separate base system built around raids and defenses and so forth would be a fun direction for growth. But trying to bring raiding into the current game and current base setup... I think it would be a time-costly mess that wouldn't please any but a few. -

You can do the first, more or less choose any portal, attach a letter beacon, 'port to a detached room. (No TARDIS, though.) Yep yep yep on the second two, though. I have a couple of complex structures I've moved once or twice and it's a huge PITA. -
Weekly Discussion 86: Base Building Wish List
Shenanigunner replied to GM ColdSpark's topic in General Discussion
Seconded, as in my post. And maybe "colorable" is the better term, since "tintable" covers the (heh) spectrum from solid full color to faint graduated shadings. Can't disagree, however... you can "bury" the current versions in other objects so that only some small part sticks out of, say, a wall. Again, can 't disagree, but I wonder how it could be implemented with any time-to-value ratio. The grid scaling gives quite a bit of precision if you use it right. I find it more troubling that you can only accurately move stuff if it's in front of you and to the left; any other relative positioning between your alt and it makes movement erratic or impossible. Not sure it that can be fixed (easily). -

A simple, fully-tintable wall panel. Thanks. (Unless I and everyone I've asked has overlooked a base panel of significant size that can be fully tinted to a color, not just 'shaded' slightly. My immediate objective would be a greenscreen wall. The only solution ever proposed has been to stack a zillion letter 'I's together.) And if ANYTHING is going to made scalable, the letters. Or another, smaller font, at least. Would anything like a "writable" surface or panel be possible — a plate on which two or three lines of text could be 'engraved'? -
"Some days, Tielekku, I think I'd lose my head if it wasn't bolted on!" I also see bald/hollow-head images of contacts with odd hair or hats, like Long Jack.
