Just a note, it's actually about 4-500 north of the southern wall. But thanks; found it; weird stuff. I wish there was more of this, even if it was just stage dressing.

Loc on this?

Supergroups...isn't it time for a change?
Shenanigunner replied to Snarky's topic in General Discussion
Have a self-SG for all the convenience, and write entry macros for every group you are told a passcode. If SGs are still a useful way to team and such, given the massive number of options now, I think it's escaped most players. You can team 12 hours a day without an SG, or whole passel of SGs, to drive it. -
Supergroups...isn't it time for a change?
Shenanigunner replied to Snarky's topic in General Discussion
This. There just aren't any real advantages to SGing any more, except for a few close-knit teaming groups and the like. No more need to find and coddle and urge members to build Prestige so you can get another med-porter, and such. Not to mention universal access to other bases with passcodes. When everyone can build a Super base, no one will be Super any more. As someone sorta put it. I guess if you don't have time and patience to fit out one room with all the useful stuff, no matter how messily, joining an existing SG is a good idea. -
Having all the bindfiles load from \settings\live instead of \data gave me a WTF moment or two. 🙂

Pretty sure I'd done a full Nvidia update before running (or even installing) CoH. But yea, driver seems the likely culprit, one way or the other. Other than higher performance at the maxed end of the scale, what does an AMD system deliver an Intel one doesn't? I went with a 10700 because it was $100+ cheaper, uses a lot less power (I leave my system on 24/7) and ran neck and neck with the 10900 until the tippy-top end of the chart. Just couldn't justify greatly expanded cost for that marginal top-end power increase, or that of any of the Ryzens. And my other (paying )use for the system is graphics, video, rendering etc., so it's not a trivial question.

Been playing on a 28 inch 4k since relaunch. No real interest in anything bigger, since past that size really is relative. (The bigger the monitor, the further away you put it...) But I can confirm that having all that real estate to stick the windows around the edges and actually see and immerse in the game world is a lovely, lovely thing. Curved is probably a lovelier thing yet but it may make every day use of the computer a bit less convenient. (I do got to get work done when I'm wearing my other super suit...)

Yes, an SD-WAN built around Fortinet NGFWs with DPI-SSL and sandboxing is right out of the Spencer Gift Catalog. 😄 Which means I'm pretty content with Defender and Immunet on the systems.

Used AVG for years because they were of the few affordable options for WinServer. Finally let it go this year because i have better hardware-based security and very little exposure. And I couldn't justify $150 for two systems, two years. But I recommend them way over all the others, from hard practical day to day experience.

You have to do a full download; it's in a different folder and under a secure manifest. But like any modern game, all of your characters etc. are preserved.

I ran Tequila until about 2 weeks ago. Never was sure of the difference between the launchers, so I asked. Got a nice pointer to the full description of the Homecoming launcher, so when I built my new system, I used it instead of tequila. Does the same job, seems to have many advantages.

...and the problem seems to have sorted itself out, spontaneously. I have good graphics and can turn almost everything way up with no issues. Must have been some kind of driver interaction or update or such. But hey, it's great. 4K at HD scaling, 60 fps and all the shinies I could ever want.

Yeah, I learned a long time ago that FSAA really hammers the video on this engine, and leave it at 0 or 2. No, I messed with just about everything and either had crummy graphics or problems. Will start from scratch tonight and see if I can get back to that happy medium. The weird things were the little bump-bump-bump on looking around, like micro-rubberbanding, and having my Nav window decide it was going to slide across the screen no matter how many times I repositioned it or changed settings. (That stopped with an exit and restart.) ETA: And yeah, I'm way familiar with tweaking, saving and loading window configs. This is a one-time switch from an old system to a new one, with the same video card and resolution, so that hasn't been a problem. It's the actual 3D video quality/performance that's gone sideways.
-
Well, as the monitors are connected to the card, I assume it's in charge.

So after mumble years I finally built a new workstation. (3770K to 10700K... need I say more? although it was 90% due to creeping age issues and reliability more than performance...) Anyway, I installed CoH using the HC launcher this time and all is great... except that my graphics are lousy no matter what I do. I'm using the same video card (GTX 1050Ti) and initially was using the same graphic settings. Started tweaking to see what I could get out of the new system and now... I'm completely unhappy with almost every aspect. Nudged a lot of things while watching the framerate, backed off on everything that slowed it from ~60. And now nothing looks quite right, I had ny Nav window keep slllooowwwwlllyy sliding over to the right edge, setting visscale further bounces back to a setting of one... and I have perpetual little rubberbandy snaps when I am moving or rotating. 4K monitor, was running at full res before, tried backing it off to 1920x1080 and varying the field of view. No fixes. How'n'hell does going to 3X the system power, on the same video card, with all the same settings cause so many problems? Any idea what I can do to get the nice, smooth, reasonable-distance graphics I've had all along?

Yeah... there isn't really any reason to close an account here.

What are the petty but real annoyances in CoH?
Shenanigunner replied to DougGraves's topic in General Discussion
That's why I like Death Shamans. "But oh, kind sir, my XP is hardly worth your time. Allow me to raise some more for you." -

Agree with the long duration of Blinded. A team can get wiped out before it passes. But #1, not mentioned unless I missed it... getting pushed around by those fraggin' civilians! -
Yes.

Probably half the players have some niche comix powerset they hunger for. But besides all the above comments about keeping it balanced, with good animations, fully tested, etc. ... City has a metric buttload of powersets and combinations. If there isn't some AT/primary/secondary/build/buff combo that intrigues you, another powerset probably isn't the solution. I'd hope the devs concentrate on broader, more important upgrades than adding new skins to the old power set numbers.

I know the answer to this is out there, but some quick searches really haven't turned up a current, meaningful answer. What's the diff between the HC launcher and Tequila? For whatever reason, I've been using Tequila all along. About to build a whomp-ass new system and do clean installs of everything... so do I want to stay with Tequila, switch to HC, or what. and why?

It's worse than that. Since you can't find many good mobos without video, it's a choice between AMD/Nvidia... and even keeping my shop all-Nvidia, the mobo graphics are often low-end and outdated more quickly than any video card. My current station has Intel mobo graphics, which have been a huge PITA even though I keep them disabled... most Windows updates simply choke on the Intel/Nvidia combo and I have to pull the video card, reboot, make sure at least one monitor is connected to the mobo port, do the update, then put it all back together. And I just discovered that Premiere/2021 finds the "dead" Intel video on every startup and holds until I assure it I know I am an idiot for even asking it to try. (Which I am not.) Time for a new system in many ways, don't expect to be able to find a higher-end mobo without graphics. Sigh.
