What is up, my homie, as it were.

You could always call him "Blue Ray", or if he's from North Carolina then the "Blue Devil Ray". š *Ahem* On a more serious note regarding the name, here's a link to 44 types of rays and their relatives. Perhaps one of the names will be inspiration. (Personally, I like the Eagle Rays, especially the "Bat Eagle Ray". Can you just imagine? "Who are you???" gravely voice: "I'm Bat Eagle Ray Man") And honestly, look for adding something, like color, to the name to make it work, such as "Blue Manta". Sidenote: I just realized, looking through that list that there are multiple rays with names like "Bull Ray", "Cowtail Stingray" and "Cownose Ray". The folks who make cows in this game are going to have a field day.

Top Cat was one of those quirks of broadcasting that slipped past my view. While I was very well versed with the rest of Hanna-Barbera, I never saw Top Cat, even though I'd seen images of him and heard his theme song on that cassette tape of TV theme songs that made its rounds in the 1980s. Voltron, StarBlazers (Spaceship Yamato, I believe was it's other name), Robotech, Ultron, even Space Giants, a live action show no one seems to remember: the late 1970s/early 1980s was a great time for introducing Japanese storytelling to American audiences.

I'd forgotten about this, and when reminded decided to take the test again. It came out slightly different since my September 2022 posting, swapping "Gardener" for "Architect". I think the commonality must be "creativity". I've definitely seen a shift in my gaming the last two years towards strategy and creative construction, though I do still love leaping into the fray in CoH. https://apps.quanticfoundry.com/profiles/gamerprofile/brhWWGgMHF5bJJaoM3ohjy/

Just like the random video thread, but for web links. I'll kick it off. @ThaOGDreamWeaver, knowing you love Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, have you seen this? Much more retro-future but with a style of that 1930s/40s era. RETROPOLIS - A website selling art in the retro-future sci-fi vein. You can buy mugs, t-shirts, posters, calendars, cards of several kinds, etc. Be sure to click on More By The Artist for the Pulp-O-Mizer, a pulp magazine cover generator allowing significant customization, which can then be put on mugs, t-shirts, cards, etc. There's several stock images that might appeal to CoH players, such as Where is my Jet Pack? Ask me about my Death Ray! Tell it to my Giant Robot! ...and probably the favorite of every Vahz surgeon: Science: If you don't use your brain, who will?

Life-Like/Realistic Showcase Listing for July 13-28
Techwright replied to Dacy's topic in Base Construction
Very nice design! I almost missed the site-to-site portal to the outside. Good use of space, and as Forager said, the conveyor belt is something else! Three questions: 1) is there a site-to-site to go into the tower? If so, I didn't find it. 2) does the base have group storage? I didn't notice any, but perhaps it was hidden behind a wall. 3) Where's the exit for that truck next to the conveyor belt and forklift? I see no way it can do anything but move up and back on that row. Clean, good look, everything in one chamber. Function before form, that's how l like to roll. One question: How was the Iā¤ļøHC graffiti done? Admittedly, I've not gone digging in the components for graffiti, so I've no idea if the HC dev team created it or if it was composed specifically for the Station. Lots of corners to explore here, and I like the secret base. I'm very impressed with how that giant coffee cup over the door to the coffee shop was made. Lettering styling has come a long way in base building, and you definitely put it through its paces throughout your display. One observation: The house next to the guy fishing in the pond. There's a site-to-site at the front door to get in, but if there's another in place for exiting the house, I didn't find it. No worries, I whipped out a base portal to exit the house. Alternatively, I could have logged out and back in. Might consider making the exit clearer. Overall, very good, and I enjoyed looking through the various nooks. The door to the bookstore sounded creepy and I spent several minutes trying to figure out why until later when upon flying around I noticed the giant Circle of Thorns book over the building. LoL. -
That would be Tuesday for the Doctor. I mean, at least 1/4 of his stories deal with the rise of some "new" distant future human empire, federation, whatever. And honestly, if they were to do such a crossover, I'd want Matt Smith at the control console. Eleven's quirkiness would rank up there with Harcourt Fenton Mudd (the original version) for driving the Enterprise crew crazy. By "you've seen", do you mean filmed media (TV, Movie, Internet) only, or are you including comics, books, audio, etc.? By "crossover", you're referring to two completely different properties or sister shows/works? Thinking about just viewing media, I'd have to say Eureka and Warehouse 13 was a successful pairing. The two were just chocolate in the peanut butter. In other media, I'd say the old Amalgam comics, the cooperation of DC Comics and Marvel Comics was successful, though 40 years on, and I'm still not clear how successful. While the general public has never heard of Amalgam (despite constant water cooler chats of which DC/Marvel fight they'd want), I do surprisingly hear talk of Superman vs. Hulk every so often.

We do have an ongoing infusion of new blood, and... uh, sorry, just realized that was a Snarky joke. I didn't mean to... an infusion of new players. I meet a few most any week. Likewise we still have former players discovering that the game exists and/or is now authorized. So there is at least some counter to the population losses. Since I re-read the OP, please remind me: what's the maximum population each shard can handle, and is that max the same as the original game, or have there been improvements?

Sumerian Six: Weird Science Supers vs. Nazis
Techwright replied to Techwright's topic in Video Games
If you'll take a second look at the opening shot in the trailer, the Six are examining murals in what appears to be a Babylonian or Sumerian set of ruins. I'm guessing it's the setting for the game's story, or at least a major plot point. Considering the villains are trying to release a demon, presumably Sumerian, there may be other supernaturals that will come into play. -
Wile I agree about the non-matching geography, it is easily explained with multiverse concept. Not only do people vary universe to universe, but geography details do as well. Tidal forces and volcanic activity function the same but don't necessarily happen entirely the same. So coastlines and islands form differently. Your mention of the Rogue Islands is an example. I saw something years back that spoke of the Rogues as being north of Bermuda, south and east of Rhode Island. What I was shown put them in a pretty flat and empty spot, but if you look at Google Earth, which I borrow here to make the point, it records a series of underwater mountains somewhat east of the location I was shown. This can make sense in a multiverse way: the mountains are below water in the real world, they're higher and islands in the Prime and Praetorian universes.

Thanks! As I felt he needed the pistol as part of the look, I've acquired a full charge of the S.T.A.R.T. vendor's temporary pistol. It's not huge, but it does validate the pistol on the costume. I would really like to see a pistol/saber powerset at some point.

I'm surprised no one else has posted in a week. This thread is usually moving. Anyway... Red skies at night, sailors delight. Red skies at morn, sailors take warn. This is Red Skies Rogers (aka "Red Jack" Rogers) a leader of the Dread Skies Pirate League or "Skyrates" as they have been dubbed. (Yes, that makes him "The Dread Skyrate Rogers", as someone pointed out, I suppose.) Rogers is a dual sabers/(red) electrical brute, and a dieselpunk-themed sky pirate. I whipped him up one afternoon on a lark just to be different for the Friday costume contest themed for pirates. (I figured ghost pirates would be everywhere, and I was right.) While I'd not intended to retain him beyond the contest, I've grown interested as I've played the lower levels. While steampunk costume choices, thanks to an original game rollout, are fairly easy, and 1930s "pulp" look is also pretty easy, I found getting a dieselpunk look somewhat challenging. I'd love to see a possible expansion of costume elements allowing for more of it at some future point.

Spider-Noir: The Series
Techwright replied to ThaOGDreamWeaver's topic in Comic, Hero & Villain Culture
Just thought of one other for Gleeson's villain: Hammerhead. The character would fit nicely into a 1930's/40's noir gangster role, and hasn't been in live action (though he was a major villain in recent, incredibly-popular Spider-Man games.) -
Spider-Noir: The Series

I loved Sky Captain, one of the best dieselpunks out there. That said, the ending felt weak by today's standards, though it lines up with serial movie sci-fi of the day and era it was tapping into. I've wondering if this was what played against it, younger viewers not brought up on the "old stuff" and therefore not connecting with it. -
I never said it wasn't. I only said he's got a "better shape". š

This game in development caught my eye while looking around Steam this evening. Sumerian Six: Basically a Weird Science/Magic superhero tale with a WWII setting. The video will give the details. Page quote: "Lead an unlikely team of commando scientists behind enemy lines to fight Nazis, uncover arcane mysteries, and wield experimental technology to turn the tide of WWII in this real-time tactical stealth adventure." https://store.steampowered.com/app/1429850/Sumerian_Six/

The ol' shard vs thread debate - resolved
Techwright replied to Ukase's topic in Suggestions & Feedback
Russet, Golden, Irish, or Idaho? Also, "incarnate potatoes": -
Interesting idea. One problem...at least, last I knew it was...is that sometimes the team enters a building door and ends up on a cave map. If, in addition to what you suggest, there could be a "no caves" check up front, then presumably even if the mission is generated after acceptance, the game will alter the map to something not of a spelunking vein. That would be obvious in some case like the isles up north in Talos Island's zone, but less obvious in, say Independence Port or Skyway City where there are some cave doors under the buildings. A 2D map won't reveal those, only going to them.

Spider-Noir: The Series
Techwright replied to ThaOGDreamWeaver's topic in Comic, Hero & Villain Culture
So are they doing the film in sepia tone, or at least black and white? Except for a Rubik's cube, of course. It's not just that it is a noir Spider-man, it is also going to be the oldest Spider-man put to film yet. I find that intriguing. Every new Spider-man work, be it live or animation, starts off with him in high school. I'm good and ready to move past that. Tobey was a pleasant surprise with a 40's something Spider-man, but dealing with an aging spider has some untapped potential. EDIT: After perusing a pretty exhaustive list of Spidey villains, I'm guessing Gleeson might be playing a noir version of Otto Octavius. Gleeson's got a build and look reminiscent of early comic book Doc Ock. And Octavius is the safe bet for corporate bean counters. People loved Alfred Molina's version, so why not get lightning to strike a 3rd time? Considering other possibilities, however, we've not seen Shocker in live action (at least that I can recall) nor Chameleon. The latter might allow for other actors to do any physicality in the role, as Gleeson is approaching 70. -
Depends on the zone and the team. If I'm soloing, I'm more patient, unless the zone is very broken (Faultline) or long (Independence Port). I almost never go into the Archipelago, but I consider it "broken". The other reason, the team, is something I gauge at the time. If I feel the team is casual, I'll take my time. If however, there's a couple of members trying to burn through everything, I'm more likely to use mission teleporter, lest they rudely start without the rest of the team and I lose what little XP will come from their barnstorming.

Captain America: Brave New World
Techwright replied to Excraft's topic in Comic, Hero & Villain Culture
Rogers would potentially heal (with memory loss?) assuming the damage done was not instantly fatal like grenade shrapnel to the brain, hence the helmet. Walker, after juicing, might as well. I get the impression that Walker's outfit was designed to make the viewer slightly uncomfortable, but I've not heard confirmation of that. Sam Wilson, sans super soldier serum, is as vulnerable as a watermelon, just like any other normal human soldier. Which is exactly why normal human soldiers wear helmets. Sam's costume should have had one as well. -
So as superhero pictures decline, Hollywood returns to Sword-and-Sandals pics? Got it. Any chance they are holding true the the real co-Emperors? I remember it being said that Joaquin Phoenix's role bore little resemblance to the actual Commodus. I'd rather have name changes and similarities than to give the public a false perception of a real person, even a tyrant. It's my one beef with Shakespeare's Richard III, though I'm fully convinced the villain ordered the deaths of his nephews.

Just learned of this new superhero show on Netflix. I currently don't subscribe to any internet movie & TV account save for Amazon Prime, so I've not seen it (which also explains why I've not commented on stuff I'd normally be chatty about). However, this seems to be something gradually building steam. The article hasn't been updated with the results: Rotten Tomatoes currently has 14 critics reviews sitting at 100% and viewers reactions at 78%. News blurb on Supacell
