You picked the wrong secondary for an all ranged build.  Atomic is more suited to blapping than ranged.

I made the ss/rad mad king brute and the storm/rng defender.  Super fun and busy.  A departure from how I normally play my toons.  The brute got defeated a few times by hordes of enemies but she made sure to take as many down with her as possible.

 

Certainly appreciate the builds.

You said you were wanting ranged-only, of which I'd just say pull Negatron Slam out and toss in whatever you want (I'd probably do Assault or Super Speed maybe, or wiggle-in Radioactive Cloud for a safety-net AoE hold) and do with the slots what you will. Noticed you had Flame Mastery in your empty build, if you're not planning on trying to bend something like Unleash Potential, Adrenal Booster, or one of the epic "T9" like Force of Nature, there's not really anything else inside Energy Blast or Atomic that's particularly special to the idea of a "Mad King" build and having it laced with FF+Rech isn't... really doing anything. Having one proc each in Torrent and Explosive will be enough supplement to help boost basic performance, but more isn't really necessary, and at that point we're just talking about a standard-issue "Proc Monster".

 

It's up to you to tailor the build.

At a higher level, how would you compare the Brute and Tanker "Mad King" builds?  I presume the Brute does more damage but the Tanker is more survivable?  But perhaps with greater AoE threshold the Tanker is even still up there for damage?

I'm not sure if it's in this thread but I made the SS/RAD mad king  brute, it's super fun.  Rage, meltdown, assault.  Near zero defenses, decent enough resists and the heal / regen from rad armor.  It's chaotic and fun.

Yep because there are near zero defenses so the toon gets beat up a bit in large groups but that's the fun of it.  Footstomp keeps 'em on their butt and the sheer amount of damage takes 'em out pretty quickly.

Tankers will generally stand to be easier on hitting cap goals more efficiently than Brute variants, but Brutes can/will have better ST damage typically (even at the extreme end it still exists, just a closer gap). If you're looking specifically at Radiation Armor paired with Super Strength as is posted here, the Brute variant tries to get as close to 90% as possible but teeters out around 80%, the Tanker is more capable of getting to 90% on more stats, but they both have a few short comings in Negative and Psionic. Generally most of your game content you'll be fine and don't have to worry about defense at all. It's possible for a full Resistance character (at the 90% cap) to shrug off a considerable amount of defense debuff. Essentially, as the v1 builds are concerned, Yes the Tanker will be more survivable and the Brute should be a bit stronger on ST, but the Tanker will have the edge back in AoE function.

Up until recently I'd been playing the Tanker variant because its damage is comparable and the build is a bit easier to cap (and it can do it much sooner) than the Brute. The "up until..." part of that comment is in part to some changes I made for my own personal approach. Having Adrenal Booster and Meltdown on cycle gives the build a lot of extra smash and works great for teaming to build up extra value, but I found I was often forgetting to pop one or the other, and I was starting to seek harder content from a Solo perspective and I decided I really wanted to close the Negative/Psi gaps more than I wanted to play around with some extra damage.

 

Unfortunately the "final" build variant (v3) I landed on for myself is a full departure from the Mad King ideal (Procs are cut in half, no longer has the FF+Rech anywhere, completely cuts Adrenal and Meltdown just serves as supportive filler during Hybrid downtime for added damage). Variant 2 of the build (v2) however still holds everything in it, but it shifts over to Cardiac to get there so the gross build damage does drop a bit, but it becomes a bit more end-efficient as a trade off. They key for it was the inclusion of some defense buffer and getting Negative/Psi bumped higher.

I've de-lurked to give a big thank you to Sir Myshkin.  I've always wanted to get into a defender, but they've always seemed so 'meh' to play.  I was inspired by the first post in this thread, so I rolled v3 of his defender.  It's amazingly fun!  I'm only at 16th, and it's already my favorite character.  I'm really looking forward to seeing it at 50.

@Sir Myshkin I'm really liking the look of this SS/RAD brute build and thinking of respec'ing my brute into it (my current build is here: https://forums.homecomingservers.com/topic/26810-ssrad-build-help/?do=findComment&comment=353377).  A couple of Q's if you wouldn't mind:

 

1. Why Meltdown over Ground Zero? GZ has a nice 15% def debuff, is an AoE attack (431 dmg in my build) and can be proc slotted - including resist debuff. Meltdown doesn't do much to your already capped resits, and adds 30% dmg. In real world play terms - is this significantly different?

2. I've never played a resist only character - how survivable is your build?

 

I also wanted to acknowledge your awesome builds and say thank you - my Energy/Rad blaster proc monster is one of my favourite toons to play.

Meltdown is specifically for the damage bonus and nothing else. Depending on which iteration of the build you look at there may even be Adrenal Booster in there which is keeping up 30% for long stretches.

 

Capped resistances in most gameplay is actually really strong, and holds up to about -30% defense debuff before it starts to really suffer negative effects. I’ve taken it into the Incarnate trials and Tanked with zero issues. If you want to really push it into ridiculous there’s a variant of the build I have base line defense added in, but it isn’t a primary focus for most as it’s a pretty extreme-case kind of build.

Yes, but several of the builds, if they’re in full gear, are cycling a lot of +Dam so Nova is likely to annihilate whatever it hits minus bosses, so the KB will be a non-issue most of the time.

 

I don’t carry a converter in Nova on the Storm/Nrg and it clears most spawns just fine at Defender levels with a Decimation proc BU pre-Nova, so the Blaster will operate even cleaner.

Ahh Good to know.  Context is king of course. 

 

 

Oh, by the way.  Earlier today, I took the Beasts/Nature build out to the test server to give it a quick spin.   I did not get any incarnates so it was a clean 50.  I did a quick PI Portal mission set at +4/8 with Bosses and it just destroyed.     It wasn't even fair for them.   I moved the Panacea proc over to Lifegiving Spores because I prefer it there so it procs all friendlies in the patch.    It was smooth and I'm not a player with quick reflexes by far.   The FF procs did their thing and the juicy /Nature goodies came back up quickly.  Here is just 1 group of mobs from the run.

I had thought about doing something similar "ff+RECH." proc. abuse,..but my idea was built around a GRAV/KIN troller and useing my singy to pul enemies in while i used REPEL to proc ff

 

i havent done it yet but the idea is the same,

Does anyone have the Defender version updated in MIDS?  It doesn't seem to be working for me as some powers are gone/out of date/ etc.

This concept is taking survival and bending it back to the original idea of Offense is Survival, but each of the Mad King Blasters is bent around taking at least one or two key tools available to help maintain some level of performance either solo or while on teams. In terms of that Energy/Elec there's Force of Nature packed into the build that will cap the Resistances of the Blaster for a couple of minutes, and with active FF+Rech use it'll have a much shorter down time than most players experience (about a minute). Another tool packed in is something like Unleash Potential which helps boost up Defense, which in a team scenario is likely to be stacking on top of additional Maneuvers or other latent team buffs to get the Blaster over the hurdle of 45% without the effort of soft capping themselves, and again with a lot of active use in the FF+Rech proc that power will have a pretty easy 50% up time if used consistently.

 

The remaining aspect of this particular build is the fact is really is honing in on that Knockback component and pushing it forward (pun intended) as part of the front line offensive defense. A target can't engage if it's face-planted and/or out of range. Taking a set with such an aggressive "control" mechanic and pairing it up with a very damage empowered secondary, then packing it full of recharge makes it possible for this build to cycle Build Up and Aim a lot too.

 

Will you die with a build like this? Oh most likely, especially in the learning stages, but once you get ironed out you'll be dishing out such egregious amounts of damage in a timed manner that you'll likely often forget to even be focused on clicking Force of Nature and just be spamming through cycles of KB/KD and Nova between loops of BU/Aim.

I do not. Water Blast does have a couple of abilities with KB/KD components baked in, but not nearly to the same level as Energy Blast so setting up a strong assortment of attacks isn't as clean in regards to having a consistent chain of FF+Rech feeding attacks to fuel the idea; there's also not a lot going on in Temporal Manipulation beyond the auto +Rech that's intuitively connected to this idea either.

Thank you for the detailed response. I must say I've copied the energy/elec blaster to the test server.  It is ridiculously fun.  I've been stuck in the mind set of capping defense on blasters but I feel like this build has set me free. Blasters are supposed to die once in a while right?

hail, good @Sir Myshkin! i love your work! just hearing of your idea inspired me to make a mad king rad/axe tank and a mad axe empathy/energy defender, now i wanna actually run one of your builds so i'm taking the melee combo i loved and moving it to scrapper. however! mids is doing a thing and not showing me the first enhancement you put in beta decay. pretty please will you tell me what it is? will also accept any updated builds you might have lying around. thanks again for bringing this madness into the world! ❤️
