s3ri0us Posted January 23, 2020 Posted January 23, 2020 Aloha supers! While having 70+ alts i think i have never tried a defender, so here is where i need you.. I like playing with AoE attacks and being able to solo packs of mobs in TFs and +4 x8 group missions in PI. What power combos do you suggest me try ( except dark, never liked it fore some reason)? Can a defender do that kind of job or should i look into corruptors? Is it able to make a tanky like defender that can stand in melee and don't have to run like a chicken 🍗 all the time?
Darkir Posted January 24, 2020 Posted January 24, 2020 (edited) Both a corruptor and a defender can do the job you are looking for. A defender will generally be easier to build for it and most support sets are better on a defender. That being said, if you want to roll a /time /kin /dark or /cold, I'd go corruptor. A /time Corruptor will be the tankiest early on without set bonuses. The combination of farsight and time's juncture really is just that good. A /kin Corruptor is incredibly damaging and provides huge damage buffs to your team and yourself (to the cap). The problem with kin though, is that it needs sets and careful slotting in order to become tanky. It can be done and it is my personal favorite, but it requires set bonuses and lvl 50 IOs to truly be tanky. You don't want /dark so I'm skipping this one. /Cold provides lots of -res and an end buff in heat loss. So you won't have to worry about endurance if you get enough recharge. Hitting the softcap is made easier with arctic fog and you have benumb for some sweet -regen on AVs. The problem with cold is the distinct lack of useful heal. Therefore, I'd recommend pairing it with water blast if you go this route. Water blast provides a self heal in dehydrate and has good ST and AoE. I could mention storm in support of being a corruptor too, but it really does work better on a defender unless you have a pocket kin to team with. Given what you said in your post I would recommend either a proc monster time defender or a fire/time/dark corruptor. @Auroxis has a great fire/time/dark corruptor build that is very popular on the corruptor forums. Time manipulation will be the tankiest set on offer for a defender or corruptor. Edited January 24, 2020 by Darkir 1

I think i already have the fire/time corruptor from last summer when i saw @Auroxis post, never maxed him though. What about Defender combos then? They just use Corruptor builds?

No, the most effective defender builds utilize procs in order to maximize their dps. So, their most effective primaries are the ones with access to many procs.
Coyote Posted January 24, 2020 Posted January 24, 2020 A good option for a soloing Defender is Water Blast. You get a self-heal that also helps your Endurance and -Resist options, and good proc damage options in the AoEs. I would run it as a Defender since chasing proc damage means lower set bonuses, and Defenders can get their Defense values up more easily without depending on set bonuses.

Call Me Awesome Posted January 27, 2020 Posted January 27, 2020 A Kin/Sonic defender would likely fit the bill; it's capable solo and even better in a team. Kinetics is hard not to place as one of the top sets and Sonic not only does decent damage but also applies a hefty -res debuff to everything you hit thus increasing your damage even further. You'll have to look to IO bonuses and pool powers to build your defenses; that's really the only downside for playing at the damage cap (Fulcrum Shift) and beyond (Damage Cap + -Res = more damage still) while having infinite endurance (Transference), a fairly massive heal (Transfusion) and +recharge/run speed (Siphon Speed). You'll have a couple of cone attacks, one with KB (KB-KD proc suggested) and several fairly hard hitting ST attacks. Also remember that Defenders get more out of Leadership than any other AT. My only real complaint about Kinetics is the limited IO set potential. I ran a static team back on Live with 2 Kin/Sonic defenders paired with 3 Ill/Rad controllers and one Fire/Rad controller. Massive amounts of butt was kicked; we took down Lusca in under 5 minutes at level 25. Unaided by anyone else. Guardian Survivor, occasional tanker and player of most AT's. Guides: Invulnerability Tankers, The first 20 levels. Invulnerability Tankers Soft Cap defense Spoiler
oOStaticOo Posted January 27, 2020 Posted January 27, 2020 You can solo the ITF at +4x8 with a Time/Fire/Power Defender. Easily Soft-cap all defenses and also Hard-cap S/L Resists. As far as Incarnate Abilities I would go with Musculature, Ion, Diamagnetic, Cimeroran, Ageless or Rebirth (Your choice), and Assault. Don't forget to take along some temp powers and summons as well.

If i manage to get a build together i guess fire will be one of the first picks but i'm trying to find something with more than 2 AoEs.
ninpon78 Posted January 28, 2020 Posted January 28, 2020 (edited) I have a Time/Water Def that is nigh unkillable. Pretty much AOE non stop, BUT as stated above he is a Proc Monster build to maximize damage. And a Storm/Dark that does massive damage. Might I refer you to this page where the Masters above that are much smarter than we, with the power of math, figure out the details for us to use and maximize 😄 Edited January 28, 2020 by ninpon78

If i have soft cap defs and resistances so i can carry teams i don't mind using procs.

The bulk of the idea is in the first topic post, and each section that was tested has its own dedicated post within that thread going into more detail about a specific set. That aside, if you're really looking for an AoE focused path, consider Storm/Energy. In my signature is a link (Mad King) that talks a bit more specifically on how it plays. It is definitely a high-octane build that drives teams. You have to be prepared to always be in the next spawn because Tornado waits for no Tank. If I'm at the helm of that build, I'm driving the team. Not by fault of ego, but by fault of having to control my own chaos. Explosive Blast, Nova, Tornado, Lightning Storm, Freezing Rain, there's always something going on. The build also doesn't require Ageless to fix endurance (all self contained) which means your Incarnates are a pool of "whatever you want." Personally took Vorpal so I could have another +Def ability, and I get to take Clarion for mez protection. I haven't found a more aggressive monster than Storm/Nrg Defender. s3ri0us Posted January 28, 2020 Author Posted January 28, 2020 I found this Time/Fire build from @Darkir swaped Fly,Hover(eww),Afterburner with Super speed,Combat jumping,Invisibility and placed a proc in fireball and rain of fire. Defs and resists look nice even without Farsight. Any thoughts? Defs and resists look nice even without Farsight. Any thoughts? Hmmmmm, I would not use /fire on a defender unless it is for thematic reasons. I mean, go ahead and use it if you want /fire, but I think you can get more out of a different secondary. If you are looking at a time defender I would instead use a proc focused build. You will see far more performance for your money that way. @Redlynnehas a few time/dp builds in his no escape post that utilize procs effectively. Another thread you may find some nice proc builds that meet your wants is the new offender thread. Edited January 28, 2020 by Darkir

I think the thing with the proc builds is that they will have good defense because farsight is OP but the ressist will be near to nothing and i've seen builds the other way around too :/

I'll look into a build and see what I come up with, but Redlynne is better at proc builds and proc math than I am.

Look at it this way, you are not so good as Red but i am worst than you so... :P You have more chances to come up with something better than i do.

One of my friends from the Repeat Offenders did benchmark testing on all the different powers and found them to be top tier output. So I would DEFINITELY do Fire or Water if you want to do the most damage capable for a Defender.

Darkir Posted January 28, 2020 Posted January 28, 2020 (edited) Ok, you chose time/water in the message I sent to you. So, here is a time/water defender build that answers the question of how much recharge do I need? And the answer is all of it....just all of it. You have softcapped defense, 227.5% global recharge, everything is perma (chrono shift, hasten, and soul drain), maxed s/l resists, geyser and water burst have the FF proc for even more recharge goodness, dehydrate is your main ST damage with 4 procs, your endurance drain should be covered but just in case it isn't you have dark consumption. Essentially, this should be able to handle anything the game throws at it. It might be better to switch out water jet for steam spray, but I think this will be better. I don't know how people did it but they did. I'm an ultra noob and i managed to make a build with S/L resists at 86% and all the defenses 62%-69%...

I would definitely go for Steam Sprey because we are looking for an AoE based build. Why not Distortion Field though?
