I recall one of my OG tanks was a Shield/Superstrength char back on live.  But I can't remember how well it went. Given that you get the -def penalty AND basically 0 damage penalty for 10 seconds when Rage crashes.....good...bad...ugly?

Shield is Awesome - in the top 3 of most durable in the game IMO and SS is good as well - the rage crash is overhyped and easily managed if you do it right - by having ageless core and conserve power ready.

It would be a solid combination together - especially with the 1 - 2 of Shield charge Foot Stomp with double stacked rage.

Crash is overrated. You can take that time for other upkeep, keep hitting anyways (if you're proc'd out), or switch to your P2W attacks (your to-hit buff doesn't crash, just the damage). As for the sets themselve, both are great. It is still a good combo.

Hold on, wait.

Digs around in the proverbial Mid's build cupboard. I have one of these some where...

Dumps a drawer out. Ah yes, here we go:

  Reveal hidden contents

Enough Melee and AoE defense that it can completely ignore the Rage crash during regular game play, and that extra level of defense ends up making it Incarnate Trial capable at 59% Defense (outside of the Rage Crash).

This isn't really a preferred build that I would play myself, I'd rather much more go down the path of getting a couple more procs in the attacks because it improves viability of damage during the crashes (Procs aren't impacted by the -Damage debuff). I just happen to have this one from helping another person tweak a SD/SS, and the build happens to specifically target keeping enough Melee/AoE to ignore the Crash period for the most part.

Shield/Superstrength are my main tanks powersets. It's a ton of fun watching all the enemies flop on their backs from Foot Stomp and Shield Charge. The Rage crash is tougher on the leveling up portion of tanking with it being a Defense set but it does have plenty of resists so by the time your 50 between set bonuses and incarnate powers the most noticeable part is the -damage during the crash. I'm still a fan of removing the crash but the painful portion is only temporary and can be built around. Also as a fun combo look at picking up Mighty in your Incarnate Judgment slot as it's thematically fun to have with the other powers.
