War Mace / Shield or Bio Help

Sancerre

Recommended Posts

i came up with a build for war mace / shield that gets soft capped defense and rotates sorcery RoP, t9 shield, and melee core to achieve consistent 75% S/L resists as well as pretty solid numbers on other damage types.  was interested in any war mace veterans opinions on slotting... specifically the crit proc.  seemed to me like Crowd Control was the natural fit here to have high proc chance... and with decent luck on force feed back charges could even loop on itself pretty consistently.  that said the single target string would suffer forcing myself to use crowd control for a chance to proc crits, but overall the DPA is actually pretty decent even for a cleaving attack... so i dont think i feel too bad about it.  also allowed me to save 4-5 slots not worrying about slotting out jawbreaker or shatter since i only need to balance around a 5 second clobber cooldown anyways.

Couple notes--

  • im not particularly stuck on the RoP rotation but it seemed like a why not scenario... i feel like im only losing out on the hybrid damage (honestly assault hybrid can feel underwhelming a lot of times anyways and it only has 50% uptime).
  • Destiny incarnate seemed like a tossup between just fluffing out DDR with ageless or grabbing big regen from Rebirth... rebirth has always felt underwhelming but the WM/SD combo otherwise has no major heals (green candy i guess).
  • not the happiest camper with my ball lighting slotting but couldnt find a better way to get a big chunk of defense
  • spent a few slots specifically geared towards psionic resistance IOs... dont think its particularly necessary but it does look like it rounds out the numbers nicely i guess... didnt have anything better to slot RoP and OwtS with anyways because i do want to have the (2) 3% defense IOs much earlier in the build for exemplar purposes.

All that said, i havent ever tried Bio... despite its high profile and praise... have generally felt comfortable playing with positional defensive sets but im interested in maybe branching that out here instead.  ive attempted to cobble something together alongside looking at other builds with /bio, but it just look like an absolute mess of defenses with no clear direction... so im a bit lost in /bio.  if anyone could give guidance on their /Bio setup (even if it isnt war mace), i would appreciate it... sky is the limit on influence.

I'm running this and I've been pretty happy with the results.  I'm having difficulty doing +4/8 carnies on any of my /bio toons, so I'm thinking of going a different direction for a while, but this guy loves to bludgeon council empire.

curious on a couple points

  • value in focused accuracy?  you arent the only person ive seen with this.  i know blind can be annoying but i tend to have a yellow available... unless this is specifically for no inspiration challenges?  to hit buff and accuracy seem like a wash with kismet being available, bio offensive adapt giving to hit, and high end IOs (and set bonuses) having tons of accuracy everywhere.
  • you find clobber to be the best spot for crit ATO?  have you tried it elsewhere - whirling mace, shatter, crowd control?
  • DNA siphon and parasitic aura slotting seem odd to me -- no interest in essence theft (accurate healing) IO?  ive seen DNA siphon used as a proc bomb in other builds, not sure if its all that great though.

This. If you have problems with tohit as a bio, you are doing something seriously wrong, since you can easily hit 97?% to hit with kismet, offensive mode, and tactics, with nothing else. Thats a big deal, since it lets you fastcast and max damage on fast cast any snipe you launch.

I tend to combine insps for more damage on any toon that kills this fast, like a farmer would.  If Focused Accuracy doesn't work for you, I'd change it.  That goes for everything in the build, too.

Clobber gets crit ATO because of the slow recharge.  I never tried it anywhere else.  If you do and it works better, let me know.

DNA siphon and PA are slotted for recovery so I don't have to run ageless.  Barrier gives me some much needed survivability, because BIO is freaking squishy outside it's comfort zone.  The slotting also gives me 12.5% recharge.  With the +5 heal IOs, I'm still cranking out some fairly serious regen.

I'm not married to Focused Accuracy, but I do have a decent amount of endurance to play with.  If you prefer tactics, run it.  I don't think either decision is going to make or break the build.

Here's a WM/Shield build that has capped SL resistance 100% of the time.  Could be tweaked to add ranged attacks.

I'm not married to Focused Accuracy, but I do have a decent amount of endurance to play with.  If you prefer tactics, run it.  I don't think either decision is going to make or break the build.

I think there was a misunderstanding there. The tohit from offensive mode + a kismet should be way more than enough tohit, when factoring misc acc bonuses from set bonuses + acc slotting, to totally not need focused accuracy or tactics... Offensive mode is BIG +tohit.

I was not advocating tactics over FA. I was advocating against _both_, the edge case of snipes and max-fast-cast damage being the only one I know of.

I see.  Thanks.  I'll move those slots elsewhere.

This. If you have problems with tohit as a bio, you are doing something seriously wrong, since you can easily hit 97?% to hit with kismet, offensive mode, and tactics, with nothing else. Thats a big deal, since it lets you fastcast and max damage on fast cast any snipe you launch.

Fast cast is automatic now on every snipe when you're in combat. The +tohit = more damage still applies.

Funny, I've got WM/SD and WM/BIO experience.

ATO2 Proc goes in clobber. I personally don't even bother taking PA any more (you get looked at as Bio in offensive mode then ur ded). I slot DNA Siphon with the Oblit set for the bonuses. The heal has rarely saved me.

The SD version is way more survivable than Bio, but the tradeoff is damage. SD DOES get the awesomesauce Shield Charge (and the shield/mace look is AWESOME). Aid Self is a good self-heal for Shield.

I like PA because it lets you skip Ageless incarnate.  You open with PA, then drain the corpses with DNA siphon.  Hit DNA siphon as the next mob dies, and then PA is ready again should you need it.  The amount of regen it provides shouldn't be overlooked.  It's a fairly decent "oh shit" button.

Any chance you can elaborate on your ST rotation and how you've slotted it out? Curious about your choice to ATO2 Clobber since it's usually slotted into Shatter/Jawbreaker instead.

My experience with the Crit ATO is that I put it in Shatter.  Generally, I would like to get as close to a guaranteed proc activation as possible, and I would like to follow it up with a big hitter.  Shatter has a 45 degree arc, and it is pretty simple to get three or more enemies in that arc, which usually leads to a very high chance of activation

Since my AoE chain is Shatter, Crowd Control, Whirling Mace, repeat, that puts the Crit on Crowd Control, which is nice.

Since my ST chain is Shatter, Clobber, Jawbreaker or Pulverize, repeat, that puts the Crit on Clobber, which is fantastic.

Who run Bartertown?

Which is what I was told but when I brought up that SomeGuy has his in Clobber it seemed to spark some discussion. Kanil swears by him and I found a few other threads that seem to have rotations beginning with Clobber:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1av2vWL9UVgGw183BbjFNweJze7N5P3Tn8tYSppdFQgE/edit#gid=647164741
"According to this scrapper DPS chart, if you can get to 257% recharge on your powers, clobber - shatter - jawbreaker is best. Clobber - shatter - jaw breaker - pulverize is roughly 72 DPS vs 75.5 DPS at only 200% recharge so not much worse at a much easier to achieve recharge."

    Maybe bc better proc rate
  9. [5:42 PM]
    Evens out to more dmg?

    maybe
  11. [5:42 PM]
his build style likely is including snipe
  12. [5:42 PM]
    so its prob like
  13. [5:42 PM]
    shatter and snipe
  14. [5:42 PM]
    to maximize raw dmg
  15. [5:42 PM]
    out of ATO
  16. [5:42 PM]
    + more procs on ST

It's dumb simple. CL-Snipe-SH-CL-JB-SH-CL repeat.@Pzn and I tried to make a procced WM work, and I can't quite remember, but I think the only way I was able to get it close was NOT taking snipe and still put the ATO2 in Clobber. There was no time difference.in either, really. I just *really* like having a combat snipe, and the build for it is straight through, so that one is definitely my preference.

Thanks for the reply! Is this WM slotting specific to the /Bio secondary or would I be able to take it for a WM/Shield as well?

No clue why you wouldn't be able to apply it to any WM/X, honestly.

But this is my WM/SD/Snipe:

CL-Snipe-SH-CL-JB-SH-CL repeat.

I'm a simple man and stuck with Clobber, Jawbreaker, Shatter, repeat with the full set of Sup Crit Strikes in Jawbreaker, 5 Hecatomb (no damage) and Glad Strike smashing proc in Clobber, and 5 Armageddon (no damage) and FotG ResDebuff proc in Shatter. AoE chain is Clobber, Shatter, Crowd Control, so perhaps I should swap the slotting in Clob and JB. Ooops.

Not saying anyone is wrong (you gotta play how you like to play) but a lot of builds here do not seem to cap S/L resistance and F/C/E/N defense. I would lean towards something which does so. As an example of reaching that goal based off the build posted by @Deuce Spade:

Which is what I was told but when I brought up that SomeGuy has his in Clobber it seemed to spark some discussion. Kanil swears by him and I found a few other threads that seem to have rotations beginning with Clobber:

The only time that I am fighting one opponent is when I've already put down the rest of them!  I haven't crunched the numbers for a pure single target optimal chain, but for mixed use I'm *very* happy with putting it in Shatter.  Although, this does give me an excuse to craft up an alternate build for single target only.  By switching after all the lowbies are gone, that might shave a few seconds off defeating AVs.

Who run Bartertown?
