The thing about Perez Park is that flying kind of ruins it. You have to see it on foot to really appreciate it. Also, on live it's a really intimidating place when we went there at - what, level 6? 8? We knew that going beyond that gate was going to be dangerous.

Climbing to the top of the Volcano in Striga was pretty cool the first time. And the council base, entering from the Maw.

Red Caps popping out of the ground to attack you in Croatoa was a highlight. Fighting that ugly Jack in Irons.

 

But first time making it all the way around the Storm Palace, just to see what was there... epic.

 

And standing on the floating islands peering at the Ouro Ship as the sun sets.

Of the original zones, Brickstown holds a special place in my memory. I did a lot of "street-sweeping" for XP, and I have fond memories of making my way around that zone picking fights with enemies above my level. Of the original Hero Zones, it's the one that has multiple elevations that make sense.

 

Redside, I have a healthy appreciation for Sharkhead Isle, but Cap Au Diable has an amazing amount of diversity in terms of what is going on, and in the architecture.

Being a longtime fan of a certain artist, I really loved the Shadow Shard. But I remember being blown away by the sheer verticality of Grandville.

But games? He used to pay his bills with games. (He's recovering well, thanks for asking!)

Grandville has always had the most visual impact on me.  Praetoria is very cool-looking, too.  I actually like the look of most of the game, though.  I guess Croatoa is the zone I find the most visually lackluster.

Crey's Folly:

 

Loading into the zone and seeing Crey's devastation was really amazing. I think I knew a bit about the backstory and seeing this flooded nightmare where normal people used to work was really impressive. The large masses of water also added to the atmosphere, showing the amount of flooding that had taken place.

 

King's Row:

 

After the glitz and glamour of Atlas Park and/or Galaxy City, it was startling to see the run-down neighbourhoods of King's Row, with its run-down brownstone buildings (using the term 'brownstone' loosely here). Despite all this, the giant coin with Blue Steel standing in front offers a spot of hope amidst the grime. I did a lot of street sweeps here in the early days.

 

St. Martial:

 

Well, the casino is cool. What more do you need?

 

Founders Falls:

 

It looks nice, but what grabbed me mostly was the theme, the one with those descending chords. I would sometimes visit the zone just to listen to it!

Dark Astoria(OG):

 

Very spooky to see as a kid. And awesome, the hollow sound, and the ghost? Awesome.

 

The Chantry:

 

Path of Tears was pretty to listen to, and I made a habit of ALWAYS hearing it whenever I had to go to the zone. Faathim was interesting to see for the first time.

 

Founders Fall:

 

Neat pretty zone that looked like a mini Venice I think?

 

Night Ward:

 

Starry night sky to an avid Stargazer.  This zone is a trap for me if I'm not careful

 

Imperial City:

 

It looks like a cleaner version of New York.

I remember only ever going Galaxy-King's Row-Skyway City during beta. It wasn't until Live that I saw Steel Canyon. I absolutely loved the grandeur of it, especially since I was such a huge fan of flying in CoH. Something about flying to the top of a skyscraper and just hanging out up there always grabbed me. Plus it is the first zone that felt open in a way that the zones leading up to it didn't. Flying down that huge steel canyon at the center of it just felt so good.

 

As with others, the return to atlas park when homecoming opened up was emotional for me. Hearing that music, seeing Ms. Liberty. Tilting the camera back to take in Atlas. It felt like coming home again.

Here is a thought that's been on my mind for years: I simply can't wrap my head around the geography of Talos Island -> (Dark) Astoria -> Founders Falls. Setting aside the canon that the island may not have even existed until after the 1960s, and that the highway signs read "Dark Astoria", it's the water tables that have me completely confused.

The first time I zoned into Boomtown in closed beta back in 2003. The buildings were all sideways! It was ruined! It was just like those 2D fallout games I loved to play!

 

I still have a soft spot for it. It was where I parked my character when the servers went down; Flying through the air, looking down on the broken buildings I'd once looked up at in awe.

The Friend Zone. When she said it, I was like, Wow, that sucks.

But seriously...
I have always been partial to Sharkhead. I don't know if it's the soot in the air, the grimy streets, or the cold desolation of the populace, but it feels like home.

Maps, I am in awe (still) of Circle caves. Yes, those torches suck when you're in a hurry and they just seem to grab you. But if you have the time to appreciate the architecture, layout, and overall feel of it, Circle caves do it for me.

Then there are private bases that just blow my mind. I bet the people who created them are architects in real life. I've been to some that are really jaw-dropping.
