DM/Rad Brute Critique

Hello fellow CoX'ers!

 

I've been going through the forums and been trying to piece together a decent build for a [grim] concept I had in mind.  I wanted to go with a back story of someone who was experimented on and survived a nuclear reactor gone bad scene (hence DM/Rad with one of the sets being Experimentation).  But alas, I couldn't find much for this pairing.  I ended up compiling various DM/x and x/Rad builds and playing with what I thought might be decent.

 

At first I included the Leviathan Mastery for the School of Sharks hold and Arctic Breath debuffs but I sacked that and *gasp* Hasten to pool the Fighting set.  I figure it's better to go defensive since Dark/Rad have some debuffs already..

 

Goals in mind:

1. Generous damage dealer

2. Take a hit or two

3. Be able to hold aggro

4. Would love to solo AV/GMs (as is everyone)

 

Some notes - never played a Tank/Brute, even back on live servers.  I've mained Scrappers though lately I've been running a Fire/Dark Controller.  I'm still getting a grasp on Incarnates as well - I get the general gist but I'm still not super savvy as to what works best on what types/builds.

 

Any thoughts/suggestions/guidance as to how I can really improve this build?  Money/merits aren't an issue at the moment as it's only in concept phase.

First thing i did was turn off meltdown. Do that and look at your resists. Without hasten you won't get perma soul drain and thats a large dent in your dps. You could dump corrosive vial for adrenal booster, even with a couple of boosted adjusted targeting bits (recharge+to hit/recharge) it'd make a difference although its got a downtime even longer than meltdown it could fill in a bit when soul drain's down. I'm not convinced 6 slotting winter bits is the way to go, fire/cold def doesn't seem that necessary i'm pretty certain you can get much higher resists to it more easily. I do have 1 of these but it rarely/never gets played i find dm/bio/soul much more fun and easier to build but i did post the dm/rad somewhere on here when others were asking but it runs hasten. Seriously i'd find a way to fit it in purely for soul drain even if it means dumping manouvres which is making next to no difference anyway. Possibly something like this although the defence drops . the resist are up and with spiritual/agility in you'd have perma hasten/soul drain. Its a rush job using whatever build i had in mids theres gaping resist holes and i'm sure it can be done much better but its just an example of how to bump the recharge sufficiently to raise the dps (drop cross punch for shadow maul and i think its all your power picks

Thank you for the critiquing!  Slotting for a Brute definitely not my strong suit but I do appreciate the feedback.  I guess my first question is that Soul Drain is pretty much the key to a DM build?  Or just key for a high DPS in general?  Asking to learn.

The 6 slotting for winter was to try and round out the defense but I understand what you mean.  I'll definitely play around with the build you provided (thank you!!).  There are a lot of interesting mixes for the enhancements.  Another question I have since I mostly have found people slotting for sets rather than individual boosts - does this kind of build benefit more from slotting for individual bonuses rather than the set bonuses?

 

I really appreciate you taking the time to look over this and provide some insights!  I was debating if Bio was better than Rad...ended up going with Rad since I've been trying to play with a TW/Bio Scrapper (which I've yet to play around with in Mids).  You rock!

I have not run Rad armor but I have run a ton of Dark melee, usually with Invul.  They key is ..... Recharge and Accuracy.  Chase your recharge and accuracy bonuses and things start to tighten up.

@Swordacool this might help:

 

 

Its an old thread not updated builds for page 5 but you can re-order power picks as you like. Yes i find soul drain to be the base for my dm builds and yes it will bump you to max damage if you can find and keep mobs around you to drain off. This works really well with /rad as its not running a damage aura so they don't tend to evaporate as fast and you can just use them to keep the damage high and focus on single hard targets.

 

As to set slotting that all depends on the player. If you look at other builds on other AT's posted by various players you'll soon start to notice they slot in a particular way with specific goals in mind. For example @Hyperstrike builds tanks, irrelevant of the AT it will be built for maximum defence and resists. You'd be able to jump into the centre of a mob and survive and click attacks til they die. There won't be a single extra chance for damage or much recharge but you won't die. On the other hand @Nemu will build to maximise the primary and secondary in the opposite way with a very specific goal in mind, tons of recharge, tons of extra damage and just enough survivability (provided you know your primary+secondary extremely well and the enemies your facing, where to position yourself and which ones to take out first) to murder mobs at speed and look cool doing it...and not die. Build like a tank and you'll feel very safe have a 'clean' build (by clean i mean you'll have a ton of set bonuses, like 2 pages long, usually every power fully slotted) but you'll have 0 recharge in the build and do very little damage. Build a 'dirty' build (very few set bonuses but tons of extra recharge and extra chance to damage pieces) and you'll have a much higher dps toon. 

 

What you build will depend on your playstyle as we all play differently and enjoy the game in different ways. For the Dm/Rad you need to understand the primary and secondary and how the 2 mesh and decide which route you want to go. Do you want to max damage and recharge or do you want to max defence and resists. You won't get both with this combo.

 

Your a brute not a tank so i recommend getting enough recharge to keep soul drain up for the damage with just enough defence and resists to keep you standing and kill stuff before it kills you. Or make it a tank. Or go dm/bio.

 

I was going to post another old build but i won't bother, it had high resists but was so dull to play i respecced out of it. Make your own, take gloom and dark obliteration and have fun with it. Or roll it as a tank. Or make a dm/bio instead.

I appreciate the post over all but this stuck out to me.  I went in with the mindset of "theme", "GM/AV", and "defense" but as I read/learn more, it sounds like going after Recharge should be the priority and everything else will follow.  I guess it makes more sense to wipe the floor fast rather than draw it out (which in my initial mindset was to go after GM/AVs as well).  I'll start to fine tune my thinking!

Digesting a lot of the post (still waiting on the coffee to kick in) but I'm picking up what you're putting down.  As you mention it, it is definitely clicking that I tend to see the same players posting their play styles over several posts.  But having it called out makes it click even better.  I appreciate it.

 

Putting toon building in the sense that (grossly summarizing) going "defensive" for long drawn fights v "DPS" wipe the floor clean makes a whole lot of sense.  I was trying to balance it the best I could in a maximized way but I as I look over the builds, definitely see how I let it get out of hand and I lost sight of things.  Thank you for the great perspective on this.  I think the line I quoted for you really hit for me - I should play more on the offensive side rather than the defensive side given it's the brute.  I'll have to look at the two folks you tagged and look over their builds.  Eventually I'd like to find the type of building style that is my style but maybe I'm naively optimistic.

Following up on @Meknomancer's call out.

 

There are some build combinations that lend themselves better for building more aggressively than others and it's still important to understand even in those aggressive builds what is the key to your survival.

 

For Rad Armor it's Particle Shielding. Since it's a click power with a decent cool down, it means your survival is going to depend a bit on having good to high recharge. The absorb shield + Siphon life from dark melee will do a decent job of topping off your HP.

 

HIgh recharge has a lot of synergy with an aggressive proc monster builds and Rad armor is a great set for proc monster powers. Radiation therapy and ground zero can both do a lot of damage when filled with procs. If you really want to go nuts with more procs take arctic breath from Mako's patron pool. Having a good density of AoE attacks means you can alpha strike groups and kill fodder faster. And less stuff hitting you = less pressure to lean into your survival tools and that is the other half of the equation for survival against 90% of game content. If you played blasters you know that killing stuff before they kill you works.

 

Here is a stone/Rad scrapper build I posted a while ago that capitalizes on procs, recharge, and knockdown. I prefer power combinations with a few knockdown powers both for the recharge bonus and the mitigation the mechanic provides, but Dark Melee is a solid pick as well.

 

Here's my thought on arctic breath. However unlike banes, a procced Rad armor build will have enough AoE to alpha strike fodder, and since AB is a cone it does interfere with positioning all your other PBAoEs.
 

 

Unpopular opinion here I'm sure but I also debate the sequencing of unleashing my AoEs to open fights. Most folks probably gravitate to soul drain first then whatever else. But soul drains sucks up 4 seconds of cast time for mediocre damage. If you open with ground zero and then rad therapy you can do a whole lot more alpha damage in that time. And without a good saturation of mobs the soul drain buff is lackluster. Soul drain is not too proc monster friendly and most people will try to maximize the recharge slotting of it which to me means it's a placeholder for a set for those much needed global recharge bonuses.

Personally, I run an Overkill proc DM/Rad Scrap over a Brute for access to Moonbeam and Shadow Meld. My philosophy is "If it's dead, it can't kill me." This goes for everything up to +4 AVs. Seriously, only Diabolique and her stupid bubble have escaped my clutches!

Slow resist is something I'm very particular about in every build I make. I hate being slowed. It's such a bummer. If a build I made has less than 80% slow resist, it has a good chance of getting scrapped completely and starting over, even to the detriment of other stats.

For example @Hyperstrike builds tanks, irrelevant of the AT it will be built for maximum defence and resists. This build ticks every major build sin on the list:

  • Missing key powers (hasten)
  • Missing key procs (GA +3 def but no steadfast +3 def? Shieldwall +5 res but no reactive defenses +3 scaling res? Make up your mind.)
  • Poor enhancement values (particle shielding, tough), illogical slottings (CJ is better slotted than Weave?)
  • Incoherent defense strategy (mix of typed & positional defense)
  • Low recharge (why is soul drain not permanent?)

Fortunately, I see people have posted lots of builds for you to copy, so you should be set. Make sure to pick one that has perma-souldrain or close to it, and well-slotted particle shielding (max absorb and rech, because tough enemies deplete the shield quickly, and IIRC the regen lasts for less duration than the recovery). Also, I'm not a fan of relying on meltdown to cap res, because it is not permanent. But that's my personal preference; you may differ, especially if you think you are willing to manage yet another power in the middle of combat.

I respect picking powers for the sakes of a concept, especially since it increases the challenge of making the build perform well. But I question if your concept involves ineffectually throwing test tubes at enemies and carrying around syringes you never use.

  • Experimental injection has an extremely short range, almost melee range. It is a lot harder to use than Aid Other from medicine. If you have a syringe fetish you may as well take the recovery booster P2W power which has a very dramatic animation, but on yourself.
  • Without acc your corrosive vial will hit nothing.

When you're taking powers for concept, think about what it is about the power that attracts you. Is it the animation? Is it a particular effect? Can that animation or effect be found elsewhere, for lower cost or for free? Can it be substituted with clever power customization, a temp power or prestige power, maybe a /cce or other emote? And if the decision is to take the power, make sure it's a power you'll actually want to use. Proc out corrosive vial! Make it something that inflicts more than mocking laughter from enemies. Because if you take it and you never use it, it ain't doing a whole lot for your concept is it?

 

P.S. Love to see some love for arctic breath. Cones are clunky on a melee AT, but this one is actually worth it.

Ok my last attempt. There's no room for experimentation as far as i can tell. I often say to new players that every combo can be made to work on every AT. Just not this one. Dark Melee has no soft control other than the - to hit and thats mostly single target. You can toss avalanche/overwhelming procs into pbaoe's and hope they fire off but thats not reliable. Moonfire run reminded me that resist sets with no defence are about as useful as defence sets with no resists (unless your running SR) and that defence trumps resists in 90% + of game content. And accuracy matters...a lot. So i started from scratch gave up recharge/procs/resists. Cross punch makes up for a lot of DM's weaknesses provides a little soft control and bumps recharge. i don't know why i ever took it out the build in the first place. Still can't fit in ground zero/dark consumption/shadow maul and some of the slotting just looks wrong, but its just mids isn't it? In game should be a totally different matter *fingers crossed*

There are some build combinations that lend themselves better for building more aggressively than others and it's still important to understand even in those aggressive builds what is the key to your survival.

 

For Rad Armor it's Particle Shielding. Since it's a click power with a decent cool down, it means your survival is going to depend a bit on having good to high recharge. The absorb shield + Siphon life from dark melee will do a decent job of topping off your HP.

 

HIgh recharge has a lot of synergy with an aggressive proc monster builds and Rad armor is a great set for proc monster powers. Radiation therapy and ground zero can both do a lot of damage when filled with procs. If you really want to go nuts with more procs take arctic breath from Mako's patron pool. Having a good density of AoE attacks means you can alpha strike groups and kill fodder faster. And less stuff hitting you = less pressure to lean into your survival tools and that is the other half of the equation for survival against 90% of game content. If you played blasters you know that killing stuff before they kill you works.

 

Here is a stone/Rad scrapper build I posted a while ago that capitalizes on procs, recharge, and knockdown. I prefer power combinations with a few knockdown powers both for the recharge bonus and the mitigation the mechanic provides, but Dark Melee is a solid pick as well.

 

Here's my thought on arctic breath. However unlike banes, a procced Rad armor build will have enough AoE to alpha strike fodder, and since AB is a cone it does interfere with positioning all your other PBAoEs.
 

 

Unpopular opinion here I'm sure but I also debate the sequencing of unleashing my AoEs to open fights. Most folks probably gravitate to soul drain first then whatever else. But soul drains sucks up 4 seconds of cast time for mediocre damage. If you open with ground zero and then rad therapy you can do a whole lot more alpha damage in that time. And without a good saturation of mobs the soul drain buff is lackluster. Soul drain is not too proc monster friendly and most people will try to maximize the recharge slotting of it which to me means it's a placeholder for a set for those much needed global recharge bonuses.

Interesting, in my mind, I was treating Particle Shielding like Dull Pain for a /Regen scrapper.  I rarely used it unless I was in an emergency.  But as I type, I'm realizing that they are two verrry different circumstances and I need to not associate the builds like that.

 

I did want to add Arctic Breath but I traded it for the Fighting set thinking defenses were better in the end.  I think the "Kill or be killed" mindset clicks here though in the sense that long, drawn out fights make survival seem less likely.  Very useful to keep in mind.  Especially if I want to go after AV/GMs.

Fortunately, I see people have posted lots of builds for you to copy, so you should be set. Make sure to pick one that has perma-souldrain or close to it, and well-slotted particle shielding (max absorb and rech, because tough enemies deplete the shield quickly, and IIRC the regen lasts for less duration than the recovery). Also, I'm not a fan of relying on meltdown to cap res, because it is not permanent. But that's my personal preference; you may differ, especially if you think you are willing to manage yet another power in the middle of combat.

 

I just want to point out one particular issue:

I respect picking powers for the sakes of a concept, especially since it increases the challenge of making the build perform well. But I question if your concept involves ineffectually throwing test tubes at enemies and carrying around syringes you never use.

  • Experimental injection has an extremely short range, almost melee range. It is a lot harder to use than Aid Other from medicine. If you have a syringe fetish you may as well take the recovery booster P2W power which has a very dramatic animation, but on yourself.
  • Without acc your corrosive vial will hit nothing.

When you're taking powers for concept, think about what it is about the power that attracts you. Is it the animation? Is it a particular effect? Can that animation or effect be found elsewhere, for lower cost or for free? Can it be substituted with clever power customization, a temp power or prestige power, maybe a /cce or other emote? And if the decision is to take the power, make sure it's a power you'll actually want to use. Proc out corrosive vial! Make it something that inflicts more than mocking laughter from enemies. Because if you take it and you never use it, it ain't doing a whole lot for your concept is it?

 

P.S. Love to see some love for arctic breath. Cones are clunky on a melee AT, but this one is actually worth it.

Well if this is the worst sins I've created, I'll certainly take it..  But jokes aside, I wanted to see if I could go without Hasten.  Seeing all the feedback, definitely a big mistake on my end.  Not sure what you mean about Steadfast +3 Def or Shieldwall +3 Res.. They are both in the build unless you're implying they are on the wrong powers like you make in point 3 (thank you for the feedback on those).

 

Can you elaborate a bit more on point 4 regarding mixed and positional defense?  I feel like I've read that but didn't click so I tried to keep everything as broad values.

 

There's definitely speed in the Experimentation set too!  So I promise it doesn't break the pick 2 power requirement.  I've never seen the powerpool used (or used it myself) so I never realized how poor it is..  You do have an amazing point that that if I don't use the power, is it actually worth it.  Definitely something worth stetching the ole noggin' for.

 

 

All of this helps me understand what I am missing out on as well.  I knew I didn't know a whole lot and reading posts only gets me so far.  Having conversations like this helps folks grow so I do truly appreciate everyone's input 🙂

Sorry...should have added this in my last post..  I appreciate the attempt in trying to add in Experimentation but Zect has a decent point.  Even though the pool may seem good in concept, it does not good if it's never used...  That said I dig this a lot.  It seems pretty balanced although it looks like some of the powers are out of order.  I think some of the later powers were placed too earlier but nothing moving won't fix.  Hasten is almost permanent too without other procs going off it looks like... Definitely going to need to play with this and some of the other builds!

Is Bile Spray a good power for this set?  I've never used it.  Considering the feedback from others too, how would it fit into the rotation of attacks?  Or is it just a set mule?

Not too much that isn't readily apparent. The only changes I really made were the shuffling of some enhancements, and I made those while considering the pros and cons of Brute vs Scrapper.

 

For me, giving up Shadow Meld for Darkest Night is a hard trade, but it does present some new strategies. Having DN allows you the ability to make the mob come to you instead of having to aggressively engage, which is what I use Shadow Meld for. I consider Gloom and Moonbeam to be equal in value, one is just better for sustained DPS and the latter for burst.

 

Meltdown is also huge on a Brute for mitigation, at least in this case. Going from 70% RES to almost capped is good utility vs mostly being a DMG buff click on a scrapper. I would amount this to the Brute being able to stand up about 15 seconds longer than the Scrapper before going splat, which can make a difference in a hot situation.

 

But is that worth trading out the damage the Scrapper can give? For me, no, but I like the big orange numbers. Everybody is gangster until Midnight Grasp + Moonbeam does over 2k dmg with crits.

It's mostly just a mule for the purple sets. Proc heavy builds need recharge and accuracy due to the fact that you won't be slotting much of either in powers you want to proc. And proc heavy builds don't proc bomb every power. So you have to strategically set aside powers as mules for sets that gets you those bonuses.

 

You have to look at how all the pieces fit together. In chasing global recharge I have the option to take spirit shark instead of school of sharks or bile spray. but I opted for those two because both purple sets gives me +ACC bonuses where as apocalypse in spirit shark does not. And I need those Acc bonuses to make sure that powers like arctic breath and touch of fear have a better chance to connect.

 

Incidentally with those power picks you can have a pure ranged AoE volley if you want to be a hipster. It'll be almost as epic as a ranged hover blasting scrapper.

Ok @Swordacool i edited the first build i posted with the experimentation pool in and it looks like it might actually work. I have 0 experience with corrosive vial so i don't know what slotting works best though. Theres plenty of slow res in it maybe too much which would let you pull 2 slots from toxic dart and toss them in either rad therapy (oblit and eradication procs) or corrosive vial (probably lady grey and achilles/shield breaker/posi/bombardment proc) Obviously some powers got dropped. Shadow maul i find useless on scraps/brutes its basically single target unlike the tank version on a power set that already has more than enough st attacks and lacks aoes. No room for taunt if i toss in hasten and leadership had to go. Resists went down but i found that it was possible to hit 45'ish s/l/melee defence which makes for a much smoother play. Recharge doesnt appear fantastic until you hit cross punch (essential for the force feedback) and then you'd probably find you have perma hasten/soul drain. Ground zero/dark consumption are interchangeable depending on which you'd prefer. You could drop gloom for whatever its just there for the 10% recharge and because i love it (take taunt for instance and toss the apoc bits into toxic dart) . Its not fantastic its just something to look at and fiddle with til you get the build you want.

 

The biggest thing i noticed after running the moonfire was that even if my to hit got floored by the vamps and all my attacks missed if i hit soul drain (which would miss everything) the gaussian proc would fire off and i'd then be able to punch stuff til the debuffs wore off so that piece alone made a huge difference.

 

Thanks to @Spaghetti Bettyand @Nemu for tossing in builds and ideas. Certainly gave me some thoughts about my own build.

 

Last thing i'll say on this is it makes a huge difference when other players chime in and post stuff but i'd advise against directly copying a build and then making it in game. Nobody plays the same way and i can tell you from experience (and having team up with @Nemu on torch+excel) that the builds players post will not work for you. I once copied someone elses and then tried it in game and it felt like a glass cannon and i got hammered after watching them tank and dps +4 mobs with ease. Everyone has their own way of playing the game and unlike other mmo's where you could just straight copy what someone else uses and make it work , you need to make your own builds that work for you in coh. So stick to your theme, keep experimentation as it fits the character idea you have in your head and you'll have alot more fun once you find the build you like and it works out for you.
