Other worlds (high end street sweeping via Portals)

Recommended Posts

Just an idea that cropped up via another thread.

With requests for higher end hazard/street sweeping zones comes a few problems - revamping mobs for 50+ and/or Incarnates and where you *put* them, since you'd have to revamp zones as well.

"Unless..."

Both sides have portal tech. We have plenty of maps. Why don't we just take advantage and say these are "other worlds" - we do already, after all, with Tina/Unai's missions - and make some exclusively high end / Incarnate street sweeping maps? Likely with their own contact, granted.

Aside from just being a place to street sweep, it can also be a place the devs can play with mobs. Introduce something new just to try them out, swap powers around, etc. Throw in more story ideas that there's not *quite* enough for a full arc or whatnot - Nuclear Nemesis, say (he got a late start.) Nictus Carnies take over the world for a terrifying neverending party. COT side with BP.  Two different Hamidons that both discovered how to ...ooze? ... into another dimension at war with each other - and you.

I'd say it'd probably be the "easy way out" to try out ideas like that and give high level/incarnate folks new places to street sweep for those that want to do it. (There could, of course, be related missions, too, but this would also be more exploratory - both in game and in NPC mechanics.)

What if they re-introduced Galaxy City, only now inhabited by much tougher Shivans, being recommended/geared-towards 50+ players with Incarnates...

It doesn't have to be another world. It could be another Zone in Paragon or Sprawl. There's certainly room on the city map to fit more stuff.

Maybe populate Kalisti Wharf with enemies...  Would be a great co-op zone to also run radios/newspaper missions in!

As for other spots for Hazard Zones, one possible area could be between Independence Port, Crey's Folly, and the Rikti War Zone. Another possible spot could be between Boomtown and Croatoa.

I'm mostly looking at it that way (a) to make it easier (instead of "where does it connect," figuring out gateways, etc. you just... "Hey, we found a kind of dangerous dimension if you want to challenge yourself) and (b) kind of encourage more experimentation without necessarily having to fit it into lore or storylines (past "we found another one.")

You could also explore a lot of "what-if" scenarios, via dimensional portals, like what if Statesman & Lord Recluse never had a falling out, or what if the Rikti were successful with their invasion...

I was wondering the same thing when can we explore galaxy city after its downfall maybe to control the area or to start clean up?

They might call it something else like how Creys Folly was called Venice and how Boomtown was Baumton.

So maybe something like the Shivan Exclusion Zone or some such. I still think turning Paragon sprawl into a Hazard Zone would be a good idea

I'm game for this.  Like @biostem my first thought was a CoH version of Marvel's "What If...?" series, and you have some nifty ideas there.  I'd add one extra thought:  how are we in the Prime Universe (and by extension Praetoria and Rikti which both seemed to have benefited from Prime tech) the only ones in a multi-verse to have an active portal program running?  What happens when we encounter others who have a fully functional program?  We've already seen how it enabled the Rikti to do great harm, and Praetoria to save its remaining people.  So what happens when your Nuclear Nemesis, or a dominant Arachnos, or an overzealous Longbow (theirs, not our overzealous bunch) begins a full portal program?

I'm 100% on board with this.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the original idea to make half of KW red-side to begin with?  I'm definitely down for getting the zone fully functional.

The spot by the west side of IP might also serve as cause to improve the west side of IP, and bring more activity to that area.

Much as I hate to abandon "Galaxy City" (which itself was a rename of the former Paragon Heights), this does seem par for the course for CoH.  In addition to what you wrote, Overbrook became Faultline, Eastgate became The Hollows, and Woodvale became Eden.   It seems the city names its changed areas after the destruction that caused the change.  Therefore, an alternate name I'd pitch might be "Starfall" or "Firefall" as the destruction came with a meteoric attack.

I mean, if there are potentially billions or trillions of alternate universes, and only like .0001% of them develop portal technology, that could account for why we haven't run into others, **yet**.

Math says that would still be thousands to millions of worlds that have portal technology.

Yes, and?  It's still a very low probability that they'd encounter another portal-having Earth.  It's kind of like all the reasons stated in the Fermi Paradox as to why we don't see aliens...

At 1 billion worlds, if .0001% have portal technology, that would be 10,000 worlds with portal technology. And us finding them or them finding us is 1:999,999,999. Us finding any of them rather than a specific 1 of them is 1:100,000, so still very low odds. However, that also means that if there are 1 billion different realities, we still have a lot of worlds that can be introduced whenever the devs have time to build them.

... so, ever play Portal?

Ever set the portals up so one's on the ceiling directly above one on the floor?

*That* happens. >.>

Each time a portal is opened, there’s a chance we attract extra-dimensional attention. Every other world that had an active portal program has been destroyed. We’re the last one left.

Here I thought you meant Daddy Longleg and his Long Arms of the Law going up against Domestic Terrorist and his cronies, the Bondage Brigade. Glad you cleared that up. 😛
