plymster Posted September 24 Posted September 24 While wandering around near city hall in Atlas Park, I came across this exchange: It makes sense that in September 2011 (when Galaxy City got scragged in issue 21), that nobody would think twice about this, but given that the Republican party is shouting these lies, encouraging bomb threats (or at least not denouncing them), and threatening deportations of legal citizens based on this same falsehood (I'm assuming that no actual Galaxy City refugees are eating pets), perhaps refugee scapegoating and villification should be removed? I'm not sure this should be addressed necessarily, but given today's highly charged political world, it might not be a bad idea. 3 4 1
Laucianna Posted September 24 Posted September 24 Yeah I think removing/altering that is a smart move judging by todays topics ❤️ Even if they changed "pets" to "trash" it would still give that wtf impression without it being politically topical for the current time 😄 2 ❤️ Kheldian Guide ❤️ 🎖️ Friday Fashion Contest 🎖️ 🗒️Character Wiki🗒️Friendly reminder that no matter what anyone or anything is saying, you ARE loved AND valued in life no matter what.
lemming Posted September 24 Posted September 24 Gah. Yea, that needs to be changed. Just shows that it's not even an original idea of them to spread it now.

There have been plenty of controversies in that time, none of which had anything to do with City of Heroes. (Unless Jack Emmert was involved somehow.) There is no reason to permanently change things for a temporary controversy. 6 1
Owl Girl Posted September 24 Posted September 24 no! do not change! firstly, life often imitates art and this is just another amazing example. secondly, we should not be so eager to 1984 ourselves by diligently editing all media of the past to scrub it of anything that could possibly be construed as wrong think by "our" "modern" sensibilities. let us have less political interference in our games and private media consumption and not more. lastly, it's hilarious. city hall doesn't want You to know about it, but Galaxy City isn't sending us their best and if i am elected mayor of Paragon i promise to build a War Wall to keep our neighborhoods safe from the flood of Galaxy City Gangbangers that Blue Siders want to see taking your radio missions and screwing up the auction house. 1 2 4 g_d's lil' monster ❤️
lemming Posted September 24 Posted September 24 I'm of the opinion of having stuff in game demonizing refugees is not a helpful thing. (Maybe a response to the "eating pets" with another NPC going "Don't be idiotic, stop listening to John Houston's podcast!" or something) It's sad that a joke comment here mirrors a real life problem, but there is direct harm happening with this. (I work in animal rescue, and the bomb threats disrupted the work of rescues in the area. And that's just a small part of it) This is an easy thing to change (i think) and we're still under active development. 2
Luminara Posted September 24 Posted September 24 Paul Verhoeven must have written that line. Get busy living... or get busy dying. That's goddamn right.

Rudra Posted September 25 Posted September 25 I'm in agreement with @phandaal and @Owl Girl. If we ask the devs to go in and change some lines of speech from the NPCs every time some politician or other public face says something that people don't want to be associated with, then we're just going neuter the game's chat into generic drivel. It's like where Tyrant comments about Black Swan's attire. Life and art tend to be mirrors, and sometimes you need comments that make some people uncomfortable in order to properly portray a situation or individual's nature. Just look at the comment as an example of life reflecting art and move on. 2 2 2
Greycat Posted September 25 Posted September 25 Pfft. I just disagree out of spite. I don't want the a**holes spreading that nonsense to have any influence here, including censoring or altering a line of NPC dialog. 1 Kheldian Lore and Backstory Guide 2.0: HC edition Out to EAT : A look at Epic ATs - what is, could have been, and never was Want 20 merits?
