Boxing vs Kicking

Ok, I only took one of these powers to get access to the later ones in the Fighting Power Pool set. Boxing makes me put my weapon away which is in the War Mace category. Two questions...

1. Does Kick also make me put my weapon away?

2. Does putting my weapon away slow down my next attack that needs the weapon out?

1: Pretty sure it does, but you don't really want to be using it anyways since its really bad as a attack (same with boxing)

2: No, this hasn't been a thing for years now. Every time you zone you only draw your weapon the first time you pull it out. after that it has no draw animation (unless you hit escape with it out)

The more important question is why you are using Boxing or Kick in your War Mace attack chain?

As I said, I took boxing only because I wanted tough and weave. Now that I have it,, should I use it? Based on my own tests and what I am reading here,, the answer appears to be no.

Boxing and Kick are generally considered a tax to get to Tough, Weave, and or Cross Punch.

Correct.

The uses are as follows:

1. Simply a prerequisite for Tough and Weave.

2. Slotted for a Melee IO Set (for the bonuses).

3. As an attack on a character with too few attacks (maybe a Controller?), especially if you take both Boxing AND Kick and also Cross Punch.

I prefer Kick. Neither is worth working into an attack chain but it's pretty funny to knock a mob down and kick it as it gets back up.

This ^.

Another thing to keep in mind, for occasions when you might need to use Boxing or Kick, is their secondary effects.  Kick has KB, but it's fairly mild, so it won't send mobs flying across the room unless you slot it with a bunch of KB enhancements.  Boxing has Stun, which I like because it's a soft control -- mobs can't hit you when they're swaying side-to-side.  The Stun effect is also pretty weak unless you boost it, but I'll usually just put either a generic Stun IO or the Acc/Stun from Rope-A-Dope in it and call it a day.

Either power can help fill a hole in your attack chain, especially if an enemy has hit you with any Slow effect, but odds are neither will be one of your bread-and-butter attacks on this or any other toon, so pick whichever fits the flavor of your toon!

That'd be why I take usually take Kick.  It isn't part of my regular attack chain, but it is a rather satisfying finisher on any mob that ends up with 1 hp after a regular attack.  The force feedback +rech. is just a bonus after that.

I front load Kick in a lot of builds in order to slot it with accuracy and fill in an otherwise sparse attack chain.

At end game I put a FF+recharge in there and if I remember to use it, see if I can get that dopamine rush from hitting the jackpot of a hit, a knockdown, and a +recharge proc.

Also, animation-wise, to me it always seems that kick lengthens your leg temporarily, which makes me think of Robert Crumb's "Keep on Truckin'."

Who run Bartertown?

I will never tire of watching Cyrus Thompson boot Baron Zoria out of the cut scene in Twilight Son's arc.

Between the two I usually go kick. But most the time don't use it.  There are times though when I use it for a FF proc, but it also doesn't have the best proc rate. Honestly it would be more useful if the Powers Devs lowered kick's recharge, so the PPM formula made kick more likely to proc Force Feedback.

And extra horribly, if you want to MAXIMIZE the damage of Cross Punch then you need to take both of them... 🤦‍♂️
I think I've slotted boxing/kick a few times over the years, purely for set bonuses. However in terms of actual usefulness, they're both Total Whittle.

"Total whittle, Vimes thought. He wasn’t sure of the precise meaning of the word, but he could hazard a shrewd guess. It sounded like whatever it was you had left when you had extracted everything of any value whatsoever." - Terry Pratchett, 'Guards! Guards!'.

It's times like this that remind me of how much effort the HC devs go through to make this game a family friendly place

I loved having Kick on my Earth/Kin/Fire troller. There is a certain mood to being able to manipulate energy, plus use the planet itself as a weapon, but choosing to take out a villain by kicking them. It's like, Yeah, I could drain your energy, encase you in stone and shoot fire at you. But you're not worth it. *kick*
