For example: if the player was able to login 72 hours after name release, what was stopping them from logging in the day before name release.... And why do they have similar names they are willing to 'trade'? It sounds like the player in question may have so many names that they are more like a burden than anything else. I think you may have misread what was said on that. They lost the name a while ago, not during the purge. So they probably tried to get it and looked it up and saw someone else had it now and thought they'd ask. They probably have similar names because they lost the other, it is in their handle. 1
kelika2 Posted November 5 Posted November 5 dont tell anyone since the number of forum viewers are vastly smaller than gameplayers but just make a mental note of november 29th or 30th to retry this is between you, me and the 30ish odd regular forum goers 2

Since my comprehension is poor, explain to me how they 'lost the (Homecoming) name' prior to the name purge release. Edited November 5 by tidge

I'm the former owner of the name Tru. Long story short, I lost it in the summer of 2023 when someone deleted all my characters. I'd happily trade another name - "True," perhaps - for it, if you're interested. I haven't decided what to say yet. I colored the relevant text red in that quote
tidge Posted November 5 Posted November 5 How did "someone" delete "someone else's" characters? I'm guessing that this wasn't the original player, but rather someone else with access to the original player's account?(*1) Ok, so maybe there is a huge calamity therein, but there is quite some time between Summer 2023 and November 2024... and I know this will come across as being insensitive... but by waiting until 04 November 2024 it really seems like the name wasn't that important. Even if they couldn't have gotten the character(s) to level 6 (takes me about an hour to solo, not using any XP extras), just logging into the character is enough. Writing only for myself: I have some named characters I really like, but I can't quite get around to playing them/crafting a build plan for them... if I lose those names, ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ . A fraction of those I've at least logged in to buy the names a few more days. Some of them I've been motivated to play! (*1) I'm still somewhat confused, because if the characters had been deleted, then the name(s) would have been available before the name release went into effect. There has to be both a complicated chain of events that leads to both the deletion and subsequent "name release" that I can't help but think of this

Sometimes relationships go bad. Not saying that's what happened because I don't know but it's not a stretch to imagine. Anyone who was deployed to the middle east and came back to find their spouse cleaned out the bank account and left them can sympathize, I'm sure. 58 minutes ago, tidge said: but by waiting until 04 November 2024 it really seems like the name wasn't that important. I think you are missing what @Battlecruiser said about how they tried to get the name back earlier and were unable to. The fact they pinged Troo (who has made his decision so really it's a moot point now) right after and offered a fair trade (with a name I personally think is better) I believe speaks to a certain veracity and forthrightness.
Maelwys Posted November 5 Posted November 5 53 minutes ago, tidge said: How did "someone" delete "someone else's" characters? Without knowing the story, I can only assume that there was a grudge of some sort at play here? I can sort of picture a case where disgruntled partner/kid/whatever deletes someone's characters out of spite (and judging by the timeline... likely whilst they're on holiday or otherwise taking a break from the game?) then by the time they realize what's happened a number of those now-freed-up character names have been taken by other players. It's not unheard of in MMORPGS for RL drama to impact on someone's in-game account... but thankfully about the only thing I've personally observed in CoH was back on live when our Coalition had a few married couples who would play each others' characters and sometimes intentionally get them into a little bit of mischief "It's OK dear I was just helping you farm your debt/damage badges..."
Apogee Posted November 6 Posted November 6 Let me try to explain it. Player A has the name Tru and uses it for RP and gaming fun Player B, who has access to Player A's account, deletes all of Player A's characters in a fit of rage. Player C picks up the name Tru before Player A can reclaim it. Player A contacts Player C to try to get the name back to no avail. Player C does not level up the character Tru and it sits unused. Nov 1st name purge happens and Tru becomes available again. Player D (Troo) claims the name Player A contacts Player D to try to get the name back 1 1
Magical Posted November 6 Posted November 6 I got about 70 names so far, and nobody has asked for any of them back. my taste in names is pretty niche. However if someone did ask and said they were the previous owner of the name, i wouldn't release it. like mentioned already in this thread, there is no way to confirm they are actually the past owner. trust but verify, in this case i cannot verify. I will release names i don't end up using, hoarding is a hassle. 1 1

While this is sad this happened to the player, but the idea of sharing log-in info with anyone is kind of disturbing. Why? Why would they do this? It's free to download and play. There is never a reason to do this. It's probably a younger kid. At least, that would be my guess. It's not my place to urge you to cede the name or urge you not to. In this specific context, I would lean towards no initially - primarily to my befuddlement of anyone foolish enough to share login info. But, if they're on a different server, I probably wouldn't care.

Parents share with kids (my kids used my account back on live), spouses and significant others share accounts, plenty of reasons it could happen. Hell, when my daughter was watching my dog while I was on vacation last Spring, I gave her access to my account so she could play in the character creator. Of course she knows I would write her out of my will if she deleted my preciouses... 1

If they're old enough to type in your user info - seems like they'd have had their own account. But hey, that's just me, obviously, this is something that some folks apparently do. It would just never have occurred to me if you didn't mention it.

(even if they cause me anxiety) One could also think of it as doing house sitting. If you can trust the person, sure. There's always the possibility of betrayal.
DoctorDitko Posted November 6 Posted November 6 Back when it cost money, I absolutely let my kids make characters on my account. I did the logging in, though. Paranoid from 5.25" floppy days! He used to pay his bills with games. (He's recovering well, thanks for asking!)
Apogee Posted November 6 Posted November 6 Oh, when my kids were younger I would not give them unfettered access to the account, but then again I didn't sit there for hours watching my artistic daughter have fun in the creator. I would log her in and let her create. She made some good ones, and well, some others. Nowadays, she is a professional graphic designer, so I find myself running my designs past her for approval. 1 1
Psyonico Posted November 6 Posted November 6 Shortly after HC came out, I let my (now) wife create a character on my account. She's not particularly computer savvy, so I logged in, selected a server, and clicked the "Create Character" button for her. She spent more time in the character creator than she did in the actual game (I think she made it halfway through the tutorial). *IF* she had actually wanted to play more I would have set up a separate account for her. No reason not to, since it's free. What this team needs is more Defenders
