Travel Powers

Recommended Posts

I seem to remember in Live we could change our flight pose....

it got me thinking, what do you all think of the creation of new travel powers like Tech travel (could be a mix of all powers) like jet boots, rocket packs, Motor Cycle, skate board, flying surfboard.. you get the idea.  I know we have some of those all ready but you can't interact (as in fight) with the ones we have now..  I think we should be able to ride the magic carpet and shoot the bad guys..

what do you all think?

As cool as that would be, it would take a bunch of work, unfortunately. The different fly poses are just emotes (/em flypose1, for example) that get held while you're moving in flight and drop as soon as your animation would change (basically, as soon as you're not moving forward). To make the current fly boards work with combat animations, they'd need to redo all the animations for every attack just for that use case, and I'm not sure the reward is really worth the effort.

Not that we can't dare to dream that they'll have the resources and time to make little improvements like this at some point, so don't give up hope!

You can do some bind work to make it so the emote happens whenever you press your Forward key, however.  It's not a perfect solution, in that it doesn't work 100% of the time.

I've often wondered... We now have different "run" stances we can use via the costume creator, could that be expanded to the fly poses as well?

while it would be a neat idea to do the inherent poses for flight

theyd have to be careful how they implemented it given that you can now have both toggles fly and hover running at the same time which affects how your posed when in motion

jet boots

There is a costume part for this. You can set this up so that the flames are always off, on for both jump and fly, or only on for fly.

I think it's call Rocket boots.

rocket packs

Some of the backpacks have animations.

There is a are back costume parts that will "activate" when flying for jumping. There are tech ones as well as anima and insect wings.

There are also several different kinds of flight and jump packs available at the START vendors.

Motor Cycle, skate board

Not likely to happen, and it would be a non-combat thing (Like the rocket board, magic carpet, and void skiff) if it was added.

There is a motorcycle that the Bruiser mastermind thug type rides in on that could be used ... I guess.

People have been trying to get vehicles into the game for a long time. Not likely to happen.

I think that the rocket board was as close to what they could get without getting Marvel involved (too Silver Surfer-ey)

Unfortunately, that isn't going to happen.

As indicated by others, new animations would have to be made for most powers.

It has been brought up multiple times in the past.

If someone posts a reply quoting me and I don't reply, they may be on ignore.

(It seems I'm involved with so much at this point that I may not be able to easily retrieve access to all the notifications)

Some players know that I have them on ignore and are likely to make posts knowing that is the case.

But the fact that I have them on ignore won't stop some of them from bullying and harassing people, because some of them love to do it. There is a group that have banded together to target forum posters they don't like. They think that this behavior is acceptable.

Ignore (in the forums) and /ignore (in-game) are tools to improve your gaming experience. Don't feel bad about using them.

More helmet types too please.

As to travel powers, about the only thing I could come up with would be like tank treads or wheels flipping down from the lower legs as an add to the super speed stuff which, as noted above, are headaches of a different level.  I mean, you have flight, jump, run, teleport already...short of actual vehicles things are pretty well covered already.

I "solved" this problem by binding my flyposes to shift+w. That way when I'm moving already, all I have to do is tap shift! It's also imperfect, but it works well enough for my purposes.

Hmm... I wonder how difficult it would be to create a "wheel-foot" boot option, and maybe give it a special effect that it only spins while moving, (maybe also a tank tread or roller skate/roller blade option).

Still waiting for swingline.

I have done a TON of AE work, both long form and single arc. Just search the AE mish list for my sig @cranebump. For more information on my stories, head to the AE forum sub-heading and look for “Crane’s World.” Support your AE authors! We ARE the new content.

They've had "swinging" in Champions Online since their launch, and let me tell you - it's kind of a crappy power.  It's not like the comic books where it can kind of just work via writer fiat - any implementation that tries to make it work everywhere, basically boils down to you using "skyhooks" and isn't as versatile nor as cool as you'd think...

I played CoL a bit a long time ago, using the swing line power. It was weird to swing around with nothing to grapnel, but I just didn’t care.  If my “natural” toon can run at a speed of 60 MPH (or more), then hooking to a cloud works, too.

From a concept perspective, I totally get it.  From an implementation standpoint, it's basically flight with extra steps - you don't need any actual anchor point.  It's similar to how they implemented gliding - it's basically flight but you can't gain altitude.  For a comic book writer, these are cool alternative ways of getting your characters from one place to another, but MMOs don't/can't really leave you severely disadvantaged by taking 1 travel power over another...

What I'd like to see are optional tweaks made to the existing travel powers. Like adding flips to regular run animation. Make the regular run not look like you have a stick stuck up your backside and make the chick's head not bobble, optionally of course - some may love looking like a perky pug running around. And I don't know what they were smoking when they came up with the amination for parkour, but I like the flips and don't really like ninja run either, or sometimes it doesn't work with the theme. More options for teleport animation, but to be honest, I am pretty happy with those. Or how about make it so phase, in Super Speed, actually works with stationary objects...and running on water would be epic!

Also, while we're at it, add a minimum FX to everything.

Like the old PnP Champions method of implementing the way speedsters like the Flash could run up the sides of buildings by defining it as Flight with the limitation "only on a surface", letting you run up walls, across water, etc.

Don't get in a flap!

I'd like to see something like a parasail where the PC can glide around suspended from a huge kite above their head.

There's a fine line between a numerator and a denominator but only a fraction of people understand that.

Colorization of current jetpacks as well.  Gold Brickers' jetpack is fun, but I can't use it on certain dark, angsty characters because it is too cheerfully golden.  It needs to come in black.

I do agree additional jet boots, or at least optional skins to the current ones, would be appreciated.

Little white wings on the ankles to fly you at supersonic speeds...

Maybe not on the ankles, per se (don't want to give anyone a chance to complain about similarities to Namor), but some winged footwear ala Hermes/Mercury?  Why not?

There are actually winged sandles in game already.  I was sad to see they didn't animate the first time I tried them with fly.

While I was indeed poking fun at Namor and the whole concept of "natural" or "mutant" tiny ankle wings being able to not only lift but deliver super speed, I could see Hermes footwear as a magic-based travel form.  While on the topic of magic, I wouldn't mind a re-skin of the jump boots to resemble the magical Seven-League Boots.
