You'd think an off switch would be simple to implement.

Sure, it's simple to implement, but it's Stone Armour for a reason. You defend yourself by using armour made from minerals. Flavour is a big part of why sets exist as they do.

Personally I prefer the minimal crystal themes for the set and like to tweak my concepts to match that.

While not a perfect solution, selecting something like "crystal minimal", along with darker colors, is at least less obtrusive.  That being said, I would like a truly minimal or "No FX" option as well...

Stone Armour can have a minimal FX option while maintaining flavour, a mineral coating over the skin makes just as much sense as bulging rocks over the shoulders.

See Gaara for example:

Do the resources exist in the community to do this now (as opposed to back in Live)?

Of course not as the image depicted, that's more a head-canon and to make it clear that minimal FX can fit the narrative of stone armor just fine.

A major selling point of CoH is how it lets you customize your look without being a slave to game mechanics as it is in other games.

So when you're talking about visual effects linked to game mechanics, players are generally willing to tolerate particle effects and glowing hands - but they start to get upset when you make it impossible to see the actual costume underneath the avalanche of power effects.

The basic principle here is that you shouldn't need to choose powers based on how you want your character to look standing around in the plaza.

The "No Particles" Macro removes quite a lot of power effects/auras/glowy bits but I haven't played anything stone so I don't know if it affects it that much but it might be worth a try? /macro_image "originicon_natural" "LAG Toggle" "++noparticles$$sync"

I've suggested an 'invisible' color added to the palette. We have certain colours (I believe it was in Radioactive Siphon) where when we choose the darkest it truly goes as close to invisible as it gets. It only worked for that power (not sure it was Radioactive siphon).

We can already see how 'black' is actually opacity as powers go very translucent when that color is picked instead of actually going black (another pet peeve as we are forced to go with the dark color palette to actually have black).

So, we COULD, without having to remodel the whole system and create new skins, allow to hide offending particles. Some skins, like Bio's carapace, are probably replacements so we couldn't use this trick as the arm itself would disappear.
