Ok, so I love brutes.  I loved them on live, I think I understood them on live?  But this isnt live.  Things are different.  I don't know anything, and I have 0 budget.  I want to make a Savage Melee brute to rampage around with.   I've narrowed the secondary choices down to Regen and Super Reflexes.  I've done SR before, on live, and it was beautifully brainless.  Even on SO's it was cruise control.  Though that was with Staff Melee, so I dont know how much heavy lifting spin-to-win was doing.  I've heard Regen is amazing on Brutes due to higher health pool and def/res being "easy" to get ($$$).

Now, if we take budget away, and farming, cause I actually want to play the game, not sit around while some violent sugar daddy (or mommy) does all the work, which secondary would be the "easiest" to make work?  Lets assume SO's only.  Playing mostly solo as I bounce AFK to deal with kids and stuff alot.  I do love my x8 when I can do it, because rampaging through a dozen mooks is way more fun than rampaging through 2 or 3.  And the XP bar actually moving over the course of a mission is nice too.  Gotta chase those dopamine dings.

So, in any world does Regen or SR, with SOs only, let me feel like a proper rampaging brute, at least until I have enough $$$ to start iterating on IO builds?

Yea, on SOs, Super Reflexes, but at level 32 think about picking up generic level 35+ IOs.   They'll be fairly cheap in comparison to having to upgrade SOs.

Regen is a lot of fun with Brutes since you have the HP to get decent regen, but it's a balancing act and you'll want to pack in set bonuses, etc...  (And you won't be the most durable, but you'll bounce back easily.)

Oh, I usually pop into Basic IOs at 35 cause the upkeep on SOs is ridiculous.  But I dont really mess with sets until 50.  But I wanted to very clear I was asking about the powersets playing with 0 set bonuses, so SOs is the shortest way to convey that intent.  I wanted something that I can enjoy playing on the way to getting time/money to actually put together a full build.  I just see alot of powerset advice talking about powers under the assumption that its in a fully kitted out build with sets.  I wanted to remove that part of the thinking about the powersets and go on the powers themselves not how good they independent of the invention system altogether.  I really appreciate the help people have been lending to this.  This community is, and always was, great.

One of the most fun combos I have played (and I have ALOT of characters) is my Savage/Regen Brute.  It was easily the easiest and fastest to level 1-50 (no 2xp involved) a true meat grinder with no Endurance issues at all.  Does he faceplant sometimes? Yup, but that is the way of Regen.

Ive never done regen before, and I am curious about it.  I think Im scared of it because it requires a little more brain than I have.  Maybe after I run SR up Ill do Savage/Regen.  Savage is proving -crazy- fun, and I like that SR really doesnt require any maintenance or babysitting.  When I knock more of the dust off the old bones, I'll have to give Regen a try and see how it compares.  As for savage melee, any powers that were wholly skippable?  Or replaceable with Fighting or something to feel better?  While its crazy fun, I find the animations on the 1st attack and the cone a little slap-fighty, less so on Huge body, but still.  Wondering if its worth doings some juggling on a respec to replace with fighting, if anyone has done it, cause Mids just does numbers, not feelings.

I've tried Sav with Regen, and it was alright! Not my favorite, but serviceable. Vicious Slash and Savage Leap are the key powers in the set, and I was running Cross Punch and some sort of epic attack in my rotation as well. I'll have to dig up the build and take another look! Hemorrhage is pretty skippable and Shred is usually a hit or miss for me depending on what I'm pairing it with.

I will also add that unless you're teaming a lot or have a ton of inf and know-how, playing Regen is going to feel like boogers!

Mainly on Excelsior. Find me in game @Spaghetti Betty.

It's not the in the choices you asked, but Bio. Bio is a great starter, one of the best really. I'd move to a Tanker to get more out of it as they can go x8 sooner than other ATs but Brute's fine too.

With Bio you will have a great handle on your endurance which will *very* quickly run away from you if you're going SO only.

Your defenses and resistances will be bad on SOs but Ablative Shield does not care about that and will get you from fight to fight to soak the alpha. Three recharge and three heal + Hasten will have it ready at every fight.

Your healing and endurance will be regularly topped off with DNA Siphon. Three recharge and three endurance + Hasten will also have it up at every fight. Once you have DNA Siphon slotted you might not need anything else.

Your early damage will be boosted via Offensive Adaptation (not as important with a Brute which was why I mentioned Tanker), but if suffering from endurance or needing a bit of a boost then the other Adaptations are there.

Damage aura pairs well with Fury but the damage aura also makes enemies do less damage.

Evolving Aura will further boost your damage with the -res.

Late game Bio becomes squishier as enemies who debuff energy defense rear up but you'll have a much better start.

For offense while you mentioned Savage Melee I suggest considering Claws.

Fast recharge attacks will be good to have since you will not have all the bells and whistles from IOs.

Spin is a godlike AoE and you get access it to it at level 6. This will hard carry you by quickly dispatching all minions in a single use with all the previously mentioned damage layers.

The KD from Focus will help mitigate damage.

The mitigation from Shockwave is superb BUT only if you decide to break the self imposed rules and get one IO to turn KB into KD. Shockwave is a big part of recomending Claws but without the IO it will be a pain. Can still work by knocking back against a wall, but it's not great.

If you DO intend to splurge on a few IOs I can throw a cheap minimal IO build up. If you happen to not be familiar how to make money then consult the guide in my signature since it is extremely easy and at its base relies in nothing more than playing the game as it was meant to be played.

I am saddened every time I see someone debating whether or not to roll a /Regen.  Please do yourself a favor, spare yourself a lot of pain and grief and go with /SR instead.

My memory from Live is a bit fuzzy, but I think if I played them all the more post 50 I would continue to have SR pull out in front of Regen. This was using Level 25 Commons. I enjoyed Regen until about Level 40 when the more nastier things you can encounter started to happen. Now? I might build a Regen on the Beta server for kicks.
