It's great that enhancements can be crafted low and sold high.

Sometimes though, I wonder if this is fair to lower level characters who are progressing normally through the game?

I'm not sure what you are talking about.

A level 35 character gets a recipe drop, crafts it (at a lower cost than a 50) then puts in on the market where a level 50 player buys it at level 50 for the going rate.

OR

A level 50 character gets the same recipe, crafts it and sells it to a level 35 character at level 35 for the going rate.

If you mean that it's unfair that the crafted item is the same price regardless of level, it's still beneficial.  It makes the supply at all levels the same.  It is possible, and perhaps even likely, that the level 35 version would be MORE expensive than the level 50 version if there is a greater supply of level 50 recipes.  Bundling all levels together eliminates supply issues at a given level that may drive up prices.

You'd also likely see prices go up for all enhancements that end in 0 or 5 for their level and then see the others tank in value.  That's the way it was on live.

The other thing is it would mean that you couldn't use the market for catalyzing any more, which, for people like me, would mean less slotting sets below their max level.

It's called Binning of related items on the Auction House.  All those Enhancements are in the same Bin, therefore they share the same Last 5 Sale History.

What happens is when there's a Purchase Order for an Item in a Bin and there's not a Sale Order on that Item in the Auction House, another Item in the same Bin if present and on a Sale Order will be converted and used to satisfy the Purchase using that Sale.

It's done on many items.  It also allows Market Conversion of Recipe and Enhancement Levels, as well Market Attunement (because that's just another type of Level).

I believe the existing Bins are:

  • The same Enhancements at all Levels including Attuned if it exists (not sure about some Special Enhancements)
  • Recipes for the same Enhancement at all Levels
  • All Common Invention Salvage
  • All Uncommon Invention Salvage
  • All Rare Invention Salvage

As @Psyonico and others have pointed out, before Shutdown when Binning and other QoL changes weren't present, prices soared.  Luck Charms in the Millions of Inf.  PvP Recipes traded off the AH for Billions of Inf.

Correct. Which was the opposite of Live. The tricks the HC devs (and SCORE?) added to the Market/AH has saved us from the disaster that was the Live economy.

I was thinking of just splitting them in two at lvl 35 or 40.

No. The current 'binning' is good for the economy in a wide variety of ways. Specifically: folks who prefer to buy (or sell) at one level are blind to the bin. The demand/supply will satisfy everyone.
