There's something in that though. I'm not a competitive person at all, but there are games with PvP or that are built around PvP that I really enjoy - and not because they appeal to my competitive nature. I played a lot of Sea of Thieves recently and had a lot of fun, I think because you could get a lot of mileage and success out of just mucking about. If I could PvP successfully with the same low-stakes, laissez-faire approach I have to the rest of the game, I'd be all over it. But as it stands, I'd be a perpetual liability to any team and I wouldn't care enough to improve. 😛 I did some arena matches with some friends a long while ago. We were all on PvE builds and equally inexperienced. That was fun, but it's really slow, even when we started predetermining winners to try and get the badges distributed.

Hah, I predicted that you specifically would disagree with that specific paragraph. But I do bow to your greater knowledge of PvP. I know very little about how PvP works in the game. I can't imagine we'd be able to get from where we are now to where I'd prefer it to get to without stepping on the toes of the existing PvP community way too much, let alone how much of a technical balancing act it would be, so it's not a change I'd expect by any stretch. But the need for an optimised build is what takes my interest away.

I mean I already ignore like 99% of the enemies on the street as it is. I'd just forgive it, for the benefit of a more condensed and lively game world. It's a CoH2 sorta idea, though.

If you could radically overhaul 1 thing....

I'd want to make the outdoor city zones to feel as interesting and rewarding as missions. Make the zones really respond to how players interact with them, having all sorts of random events happening all the time, encouraging big teams to street sweep and explore the world in interesting ways. I'd want to do away with how enemy groups spawn neutrally all over the place in weird little groups and have them a lot more responsive to how players are inhabiting the zone. Make it always worth the player's time to stop and prevent whatever crime/do-gooding is happening and for doing to to feel like it has an impact on the state of the zone. [edit: I just read this back to myself and I don't know what that last sentence was meant to say. I had just woken up.] -
To echo a lot of people, PvP would need to be less about fighting each other and more about completing wild objectives. Especially if they were designed in such a way that the side that gets the most kills isn't necessarily the side that wins. The objectives in the PvP zones on a much smaller, instanced scale is kinda broadly what I'm thinking. SWTOR's PvP when it wasn't just a 4v4 arena match was really fun to me and I feel like those sorts of game modes aren't out of the question in CoH, assuming development time was no object. A big thing for me would be if the difference between a reasonably thought-out SO build and a decked out IO set build were minuscule. One player being numerically advantaged than another is a big switch off for me. It should be close enough that someone trying PvP for the first time can easily KO a hardened veteran with a bit of luck. I'd like to be able to jump in and feel like I'm making a contribution without having to know what I'm doing. On the back of that, I'd want killing to be easy and dying to be really forgiving and neither have a significant impact on how the match comes out, so that the action just keeps going. I'm thinking like the pace of Unreal Tournament games.

I think P2W in general is a bit of a sledgehammer solution to a lot of problems. They might need solving [edit: and I'm glad they got solved rather than went unsolved], but I hope they find a more organic place in the game over time.

Sounds like you're starting to get the hang of it! Inf income from defeating mobs in levelling content is fairly low; practically negligible compared with selling a few good drops on the AH. It's balanced for a much older economy before IOs were a thing, and even then it's on the stingy side. The AH can feel like a time drain, but I've found that getting familiar with it and choosing a strategy means I can use it passively and spend less time in it.
