  1. What would you even do with this information? Other than just satisfy your own curiosity? I get it, we all want to get hyped about "what's next." But I can't in any way see such a thing, even with huge bold disclaimers, doing anyone any good. Until it's on the beta server, it's probably just speculation, and too many people take a "we're working on this" type of post as promises of future delivery. I'd rather just wait to see what gets posted on Pineapple and talk about the things we can actually test and play with rather than speculate about how some bit of development is going or isn't. Adding a reason why something is not viable is even worse... a lot of time it just opens the floodgates for uniformed rebuttals that go round and round in circles. In short... no thank you.
  2. I had a difficult time trying to get it to work through a system Wine installation, but it does seem to work using the Lutris frontend (the same thing I use to play CoH). I'm using the lutris-5.0-x86_64 Wine version with just the .NET 4.7.2 and corefonts tricks installed, and it works like a champ.
  3. Way back at launch, it was Controller. My very first character. It sounded cool on paper (I liked enchanters in EverQuest which have a similar vibe), but for the life of me I couldn't figure it out. It's been long enough I don't remember specifically why I ended up not liking it, but that first impression stuck with me all the way up until last year. Then on a whim I made a new controller. She's now an incarnate, so I guess my perspective changed. 😋
  4. Like a lot of you, I'm an altaholic. And sometimes I just want some help figuring out to play next! So I created a fun little web site called City Suggests. What does it do? Well, it introduces the power of RNG to help you figure out what character to make! Just want to get straight to it? Click here: https://coh.tips/ Want to find out more? Read on. The first thing you can do with this tool is on the Suggestions tab. Here, you can choose to "Roll Themes" which will roll a primary/secondary theme for the character and then suggest some archetypes and power sets that fit those themes. On the other hand, if you're feeling lucky, you can just click "Roll Random" which will just put together a list of completely random ATs and power sets for you to ponder. There are a couple of options you can see above to help refine things. By default it'll include all the Homecoming goodness ("Issue 25"), but if you want to use this with a non-HC server you can click over to Issue 24. Second, by default the suggestion tool will only show one power set per suggested archetype, to keep it simple. If you want the fire hose, you can uncheck that box. Here's an example of what the results look like: You can see above that it chose "Healing and Soothing of Wounds" as a primary theme and "Mind Powers" as a secondary themes. After that, it'll suggest a potential character name and then list out some ideas for achetypes and power sets (shown below). You'll notice a little padlock icon next to each theme -- if you click those, it'll lock that theme in for subsequent rolls, if you want to stay in that realm. Click it again to unlock. Example of AT/powerset results: Inline with the themes of healing and mind powers, it's given me a few options to consider. Maybe a Defender with Storm Summoning and Psychic Blast? Or perhaps a Tanker with Rad Armor and Psi Melee? The possibilities are endless! In addition to actual powersets, if you're just looking for help with naming your next alt, you can click over to the Names tab to just get a whole gob of silly random names. Some of them might actually sound like real superhero names too! You can even limit it to themes, just like the AT selections. Here's an example of what that looks like: Options here are pretty straightforward. Choose whether you want male-sounding names, female-sounding names, or both. Choose a couple of optional themes if you want, then go! What a great set of options for us! I'm thinking my next character will be Dr. Proud Paws One. She sounds fun. Finally there are two last "advanced" tabs. The "Exclusions" tab lets you choose archetypes and themes to remove from consideration if they just aren't your thing. Don't worry! It'll remember as long as you come back on the same browser/computer/phone so you don't have to change it every time. The last tab, "Themes and Power Sets", just lets you view the completely scientificarbitrary way I categorized power sets. So there you have it. Don't try to take it too seriously... this is just silly fun for all you altaholics out there. Who knows, maybe you'll get some inspiration for the next costume contest. Give it a try! And if you have any suggestions or feedback, feel free to share it here. Have fun! >>> https://coh.tips/ <<<
  5. Yeah all of Windows 10's spyware finally pushed me to adopt Linux. Thankfully over the years it's gotten a lot more usable for people who don't have comp sci degrees. Bonus, CoH plays great under WINE. 😃
  6. I agree the "always night" thing is a bit much. I was pleasantly surprised to find while doing an AE arc that inside AE missions with outdoor maps, it looks like day/night still work as normal. If you need a break, find an AE arc with some outdoor maps and bask in the sunlight once more. 😎
  7. Overall I think it's an okay system (not great, but okay). It keeps catalyst drops somewhat rare without just having you grind for a ridiculously low drop rate. As long as you play the character once per day, you'll get one basically for free. Also you can get more from the reward merit vendor for 20 merits (or get them on the AH as others have mentioned), so there are other ways to get more.
  8. I have a similar issue because I play on two different computers with different screen sizes. If I switch from the one with lower resolution to the one with higher, a lot of the windows that were on the right/bottom of the screen are now floating somewhere else. It would be a cool little QoL addition if the windows actually "docked" to the bottom/right sides so that they knew to stay sticky to the edges of the screen.
  9. Here's my Warshade that I've been levelling. Her name is Silfr. 😎
  10. What Frostbiter said. You can only earn one Enhancement Catalyst per day.
  11. I dunno about the mechanics, but definitely love the themes. +1
  12. Honestly every time I've gotten this badge it's after I've stopped trying. Seems you just need RNG to be on your side. But at the very least having everyone use fly/jetpack types powers helps, though I've never dragged him outside the building -- just have to stay off the ground inside the building and that works fine. And yes, everyone has to avoid the mines to get the badge. It's not a personal achievement.
  13. The final fight in Apex is one of the most interesting and engaging fights currently in the game... I actually like that you have to move around and don't just sit still and hit the boss until she dies. And I play mostly melee characters, it's still fun.
  14. What? Eye of the Storm is awesome, don't you dare touch it
  15. The same thing happens on Linux too, so I'm guessing it's just an incompatibility with Wine. Pretty sure there's nothing they can do with the client to fix it, but if anyone's found a tweak in Wine that addresses it that would be helpful.
  16. Part of the problem might be your computer running it too well. When I first started on Homecoming, I noticed the same thing, where my computer fans would sound like a helicopter and the temperature spiked. I checked fps (/showfps 1) and it was running at 400 fps! All those extra frames obv aren't necessary. So now I cap it at 100 fps, and it keeps the temperatures in check. So I would check first to see if maybe that's why your laptop is overheating. Setting on the lowest graphics would actually make this worse, because you'd get even more fps. If it is the case, you can use the /maxfps command to set an arbitrary limit. If you want it to be permanent, you can add it to the launcher options as -maxfps parameter.
  17. I don't think it's as much to do with nostalgia .. I didn't play on live (much, I think I tried out CoH for a month or so when it came out originally), but my wife recently got me into this now and I love it. Two things that stand out for me: 1) Sheer amount of character customization. If I have an idea, I can make it in some form or another. I love that you can not only mix and match power sets, but you can also customize how they look. And the sheer number costume options is wonderful. 2) Feeling like a real hero -- a lot of other MMOs say you're powerful, but then even a group you don't want to pull more than a couple guys or you get wiped. Here you can just round up giant herds of crunchy Council goons or whatever and blast them away! Feels like you're really powerful :3
  18. Yessss please! These are great suggestions. +1
  19. I do feel like it didn't work for me until I got the badge last night, so that may be the case.
  20. Also make sure your password isn't more than 15 characters, the game client seems not to like it if it's too long...
  21. For Wine users, make sure you have the "dinput8" winetricks installed. You won't be able to use the mouse without Direct Input support.
  22. What Fifth said... try downloading it from Microsoft here and see if that fixes it: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35
  23. Unfortunately iirc CoH is still a 32-bit program so it can't actually take advantage of all that memory. It would be crashing when it hits around 2 GB.
  24. I've run into this too a couple times. I'm not sure what causes it, but at some point the primary power tab just stops responding to clicks.
  25. We ran into this issue a couple days ago ... someone the team was able to talk to her by basically standing on top of her and staring down at the gound, then they were able to click on her feet. Try moving the camera into different positions and you might eventually be able to get around the pet...
