I'd assume they were a scam designed to take advantage of poorly conceived government grants/tax breaks and their actual utility was never a consideration in their positioning.

I go with incarnate pets that fit the character's theme. Like my praetorian mind control cult characters? All Seers. Holy avengers? The Knives of Vengeance pets with the wings. Magicians without peer? Well that means elemental pets. Techie types? Warworks. My reasoning is that they're all "eh, close enough" in power especially with a high end main character so it's more important to fill the theme and occasionally elicit a laugh from their names.

Generally when I've gotten to the point I care about the character, beyond just "oh combo x/y is fun" stage. Or when I have a really awful pun name I need to justify. Most of my alts have bios, naturally.

I believe it's around 150 names, like the SG limit used to be. That's a semi-educated guess though, as I tend to keep my global friends lists under 100 entries.
