Dark Armor has two major flaws:

  • Energy hole. Energy is the third most common type of damage. The fourth most common is "I don't know because everything is Smashing, Lethal or Energy". This makes Dark problematic on a non-Tanker (Tankers receive a global resist bonus from Might of the Tanker and can split ATO for +12% Energy Resist).
  • No endurance management. You can roughly put armor sets into two piles. One are sets that are primarily about themselves - making you as tough as possible. The other are sets primarily about your melee set - they may have gaping holes in them, but at least they ensure you can attack like a fiend. Dark Armor is firmly in the former camp. It does nothing but protect you, and it does so at a fairly high endurance cost.

So while I think Dark Armor has a lot to offer a Tanker, I don't think it makes the cut for a Scrapper.

Bio Armor is one of the favorites for Scrappers. Scrappers can split ATO to help cover the S/L defense hole. They can benefit greatly from the additional +damage/+hit. It's not a comprehensive set of defenses, but it's good enough and helps them pump out more damage.

Posted

Also note /bio has an aggro aura, making mobs stick to you like glue, nice and bunched up for your AoEs and your damage aura.

/dark has no such thing, even if you can get a (end hungry, and not as reliable) approximation through Cloak of Fear.

On the other hand, the -def from Katana attacks does wonders for Oppressive Gloom, Cloak of Fear and Death Shroud to hit adding to both your dmg and survivability.

Being chased by a wasp is the most complete sport practice!

I love my Katana/Dark Brute, but the lower resist caps on a Scrapper make it much less appealing. I’m not as familiar with Bio, even if I have a Bio Scrapper at 50, but that’s probably the direction I’d go - sufficient survivability plus a big damage boost.

Kat/Nin is a lot of fun to play.  Ninjitsu is becoming my go to set for melee.  Easy to cap DEF with nice built in heal.  Couple that with Divine Avalanche from Katana and you are un-hittable.

I'm curious about Kat/Nin - got a build @ShardWarrior?

Sure.  Be forewarned, I am not the best at building out characters lol.  I tend to go for complete sets versus picking various pool powers as IO mules and such.  This is what works for me, so your mileage may vary.  Playing this, I have found that having the 3 positions over-capped works just fine.  I am routinely fighting +2/+3 x 8 Arachnos, Carnies, Malta and CoT in PI radios and have no problems with them.  For Incarnates, I went with Cardiac.  I have not really had the need to slot any of the other Incarnate powers on her.

Nice build @ShardWarrior!  I was looking for information on Katana because I have a Katana/Ninjitsu at level 24 and the damage seems pretty low to me.  I am used to playing Stalker now, although I mainly played Scrappers on Live, so maybe that is why the damage seems low.  I'll continue on a bit and see if it gets better.  I am definitely liking Ninjitsu as a secondary.  I am a huge fan of SR, but the utility of Ninjitsu is winning me over.

Well, those are powers that you may not feel like investing a ton of slotting into, and Cloak of Fear has low base accuracy.

What is the aoe stun aura in Dark called?

You could also put a chance to stun in Dark consumption ..

Get ball lightning add another one ..

Go vigilante for the AOE fear power ..

Dark seems like you could make it controllery if you wanted too, I guess.

I mean not something a self respecting scrapper would do .. but .. some tools are there.

Dark/Electric vigilante tanktroller fearing and stunning everyone.

Katana's good harder hitting (and to me the most fun) attacks come at lvl 26 and 32 for a scrapper, so I'd definitely hang in there before deciding.

I love stalkers, but I like katana (and ninj) better on a scrapper over stalker.    Lotus drops is too nice to give up imho.  Ninjitsu gives you free extra crits and the built in hide which makes it feel semi stalker like even as a scrapper.   And Shinobi + ninja run is best travel power.   Katana's extra defense in divine avalanche helps make up for ninjitsu's mediocre DDR.

Very good combo.

You could also put a chance to stun in Dark consumption ..

That's in Dark Melee.

/dark has no such thing, even if you can get a (end hungry, and not as reliable) approximation through Cloak of Fear.

It has Death Shroud. Might not have the same taunt as Bio's aura though if that's what you mean.

Correcting myself: Bio has two auras, Genetic Contamination the damage aura and Evolving Aura doing -Resist and Taunt.
