Thinking of re-rolling some of my Brutes to Tanks - Talk me off the ledge

Recommended Posts

Back on Live I was mostly a Tank guy. I had a Brute or two. With the reincarnation of CoH, I built a few Tanks, but mostly built Brutes. I wanted the ability to do a little more damage. With the recent "upgrade" of Tanks, I'm thinking of re-rolling some of my Brutes into Tanks. Wise decision? Or no? Some caveats: My game starts at lvl 1 and goes to 50. So I don't really care about what Incarnate stuff can do for me after 50. After 50 is a different game for me. Also, I'm a "fortification" kind of guy. Even on Brutes I would  try to make the most of defense/resistances. I know Brutes have the same cap as a Tank, but it seems like a lot more work to get them there. I have no idea what kind of sacrifices need to made for this. Lastly, i solo 50% of the time. The rest is usually running with my small Supergroup. Before the "upgrade" it was painful to lvl up a Tank...early on anyway.

So, are there any numbers guys/gals out there who can tell me what the dps numbers look like after the "upgrade"? Still painful to lvl up Tanks solo? Can Tanks solo an AV or a GM? Am I crazy to re-roll some of my Brutes to Tanks? I'll probably have more questions when I can think of them.

The recent change is a 90/90 balance between the two AT's. Brutes achieve 90% of the survivability metrics of a Tanker, and Tankers now have 90% capacity damage compared to a Brute. A Brute allows for more flexible melee attack selection and achieving a consistent attack chain sooner, but Tankers can hit the metrics faster/easier with less investment. If you're more of a "fortification" kind of guy, than playing as a Tanker is probably more your speed, but at the trouble of it taking longer for you to get the broad spectrum of your abilities.

Either way, do it.

Sit in a pile of self-loathing at the idea of grinding the same character all over again just to change its AT from one to another.

OK. This 90/90 thing sounds great actually! That seems right up my alley. No self-loathing will be had. I would be happy to do it over again if it were for a good purpose...which this sounds like it is.

Some things I was thinking about after creating the post. I understand that any power that creates a "pet", will do more damage as a Tank since has the higher base number for damage. I think the number was higher before the "upgrade", but does more damage now. So there's that.

What combos are you thinking about re-rolling? some are better suited for brutes than tanks and visa versa.

What this team needs is more Defenders

SS/Shield Brute

Rad/Rad Brute

a bunch of different primaries (MA/BA/DB/SS) with Willpower secondary

Spines/Inv and DM/Inv

and I have 3 */Stone Armor Brutes that are more concept characters than anything else. I solo with these about 90% of the time

Stj/SR and BS/Shield that I'm contemplating changing over to maybe a Scrapper(?)

I'm always up for learning something new tho. If  some of these are better on Brutes, let me know!!

In my experience, Super Reflexes is MUCH better realizes on a Tanker than on a Scrapper.

Being able to add +Resistance proc stacking and +Absorb shielding via Tanker ATOs is way more valuable than adding +Critical or +Fury is to a Scrapper or Brute.  Additionally, it's possible to (with Martial Arts in particular on a Tanker) exceed the 59% Incarnate Defense softcap, rather than needing to settle for only the 45% pre-Incarnate Defense softcap, while still being able to add a respectable amount of Resistance into the Tanker build.

I haven't played Street Justice, so I wouldn't be able to speak to that specific pairing of primary/secondary, but I do know that Super Reflexes gets a lot more out of Tanker ATOs than a number of other protection schemes will.

All good info. ATO's are another thing I need to do research on. I understand that Tanks have some good ones (over Brutes anyway).

Here's a basic stab at SS/Stj

And here's an SS/MA out of my files

This left me wondering how it is possible to make a Super Strength/Street Justice and Super Strength/Martial Arts ... uh ... Tanker ...?

HEY!

I AM A TANK!

AND YOU WILL RESPECT MY AGGRO!

Besides, I get hit in the head...A LOT...

Plus, S & R are right next to one another on that alphabet thingee.

And I'm normally more used to dealing with Super Strength than Super Reflexes.

SO NYAH!

hmmmm. How does SR/Stj play as a Tank...say over a Scrapper?

Higher base HP.
Higher Resist numbers (not GREAT, but not totally sucktastic).

So, in general, more survivable.

Damage-wise, you'll be like Happy Hogan in the Black Widow hallway fight in Iron Man 2.  Where a Scrapper will be Black Widow...

One thing to keep in mind is your attacks are in your secondary with a tank.  Playing at lower levels means you have access to fewer attacks.  Of course the tradeoff is you have access to more of your primary.

This actually works out for me. Even on a Brute I tend to use only the first couple of attacks (faster recharge) for a long time.

Let's just say there's something DEEPLY cathartic (and very Zen) about slowly sanding away at your opponent's HP.

I would agree with that, in my experience the best scrapper set is Ninjitsu. FWIW. Its like SR 2.0

Stj/SR and BS/Shield that I'm contemplating changing over to maybe a Scrapper(?)

I'm always up for learning something new tho. If  some of these are better on Brutes, let me know!!

If you want different, go StJ with a Stalker. It is best there. I have a StJ/ea and totally recommend it.

Also, I was poking around for some info, and saw this thread. I was looking for info since I have been debating switching my Staff/dark brute to to tank. One problem is switching is my graphics can be super terrible on certain maps which puts me not in front of teams and being terrible as a tank so I try to avoid doing so, but I'm intrigued by the idea of a larger radius for attacks.

Top 10 Most Fun 50s.

1. Without Mercy: Claws/ea Scrapper. 2. Outsmart: Fort 3. Sneakers: Stj/ea Stalker. 4. Emma Strange: Ill/dark Controller. 5. Project Next: Ice/stone Brute. 6. Waterpark: Water/temp Blaster. 6. Mighty Matt: Rad/bio Brute. 7. Without Hesitation: Claws/sr Scrapper. 8. Within Reach: Axe/stone Brute. 9. Without Pause: Claws/wp Brute.  10. Chasing Fireworks: Fire/time Controller.
