Requesting help with Dark Armor

I don't fully understand when people say Dark Armor is one of the greatest tanker sets with the only draw backs being Endurance hungry and Knockback. Both knockback and endurance issues can be easily plugged pretty cheaply, however, all my work on Mids' shows me getting no one close to the claims of what people are saying. I hear claims like Dark Armor is able to cap resist to everything, and even defense caps too. I find that hard to believe, but some people claim to be able to do it. This is the best I can do on Mids' myself. I am not opposed to using purples, however, when I make my Mids' builds, I prefer to avoid using purples until I clock a few hours on a real (read: not test) server, playing among others, and if I enjoy it, then I will pull the trigger on purples. So if I can be a choosing beggar, I would also prefer if you avoided purples and other super expensive enhancements.

Here's an example from the Dark/Staff thread a while back that may give you an idea.    Dark is in such a good position largely because it is a Resistance based set that also has a strong Defense power in Cloak of Darkness, so the foundations are there to leverage both forms of mitigation combined with one of the game's strongest heal powers in Dark Regeneration.    If you're looking specifically for Dark/KM I'll see what I can whip up for you as I have the time.

I suspect that when most people claim 90% resists on a Dark Armor, what may go unstated but assumed is "except for energy and toxic, of course". My own Dark Armor Tanker is Martial Arts, which helps with the defense sotcaps. Then 90% to all but energy and toxic, which are 71% and 65% until you stack the ATO or start taking damage or use Barrier.

 

I consider endurance to be one of the benefits, not drawbacks of Dark Armor, at least in the endgame, due to the 86.5% resistance to debuffs. Knockback is easily handled, as you say. The primary weakness in my opinion is defense debuffs, which I plug as best I can with 55% melee defense and Barrier Core. Ageless Radial is an arguably better solution for defense debuffs, but it leaves you weaker to resistance debuffs, and doesn't let you plug the energy and toxic hole on demand.

 

Anyway, here's my build. Not Kinetic Melee, but it might be useful. It's definitely a cost-no-object build, which isn't what you want, but I'm buying my way to those good numbers.

For the record, I agree with Werner’s choices.  While defense is -nice-, the only sets Ive met that can rely on defense at endgame provide so much DDR as to give nigh immunity to defense debuffs.  Anything less and many villain groups will make DEF a joke. (And some don’t even need debuffs. -stares in Rularuu-)

 

Also, the hole to Energy Damage is a huge problem, as by endgame, Energy (along with Psi and Toxic to lesser degrees) become hilariously common.  (Amusingly, Radiation Armor is carefully tuned to address those problems - ahh, powercreep)

 

As such, Barrier is probably the best choice for Dark, and DEF is a topping, not the meal.  Also, MArts is a star, here - Tank Marts is ludicrously good for defense.

Yeah, it’s worth commenting further on the defense - on Dark Armor, when the going gets tough, and particularly if solo, it’s more of an alpha buster and a head start than it is actual defense. It WILL be stripped away, but if you can buy yourself 15 seconds, say, that can still make a big difference. Then Barrier buys you another 10-30 seconds. By the time that’s not propping you up, even solo at Tanker damage output, the threat should be so dramatically reduced that resists and Dark Regeneration have you covered.  And I’m talking about things like +4x8 Cimerorans and AE 801.2, not any average mobs. Team tanking +4x8, my hit points rarely move. Losing 1/3 my hit points is cause for mockery by my friends. “You took damage! Is something wrong? You feeling OK?”

 

All that said, I’m a complete newb at tanking, and I only finished the build on Friday, so I perhaps shouldn’t be acting like I know what I’m talking about. I may not have the best understanding of what’s required and how it plays, and my reports of experiences team tanking on the finished build is from literally just a few hours this weekend. I have years of experience with Dark Armor, though, just not on a Tanker.

DA/MA can reach 90% to all except its holes, and then 45% melee, ranged, and AoE.. DA by itself can reach the 90% to all except holes and still 45% to smash/lethal and melee.

 

But what makes DA one of the strongest is the heal. 66% HP every 10-13 seconds makes it near unkillable.

  • Build up with FC followed by a second mini build up when going EC > DT (CAK ST)
  • Do it not run into end trouble? (I know you love to solo - ive seen your solo MoITF +4 thread, gz)
  • The slotting for -slow resist is incredible. When testing on the beta server i very, very quickly realized "holy shit im unkillable on Dark/) The only i enocountered where i thought I may actually die were anything with -rech leaving me unable to Dark Regen - that 80% figure you managed to achieve is magnificant im deinantly going to have to look at adding that into my Dark/Ice build
  • Finally more of a comment than a question but holy is /MA strong on tanks! makes the +def from weapon sets seem pathetic in comparison

None whatsoever. I think I used Conserve Power once and didn’t really need to even then. It’s just there for safety, and to get me into Physical Perfection.

It’s strong, but I’m not sure I’d call it stronger than the weapon sets since it’s unenhanceable and doesn’t stack. Katana, say, could make you mostly immune to melee/lethal defense debuffs, which tend to be the most common. But I wanted to try something new. I’ll probably be fiddling with Katana builds, though. If I can significantly improve on my DPS, I might convince myself to switch.

Plus the Gaussian proc, which fires off pretty reliably. Where I was happiest to have it was fighting against uber defense. With +84% to hit for five seconds you can pretty much hit anything a few times every cycle, so you aren’t merely twiddling your thumbs waiting for defensive powers to expire. Maybe not that helpful objectively, but it’s more fun than waiting, and fun matters too.

Man I love Dark Armour theorycrafting!

 

Just rejigged my DA/Elec/Presence Feartanker build based on this thread, to squeeze in some slow/rech resistance. Only hitting 30% tho, and I don't see where to get more without sacrificing -KB (I like being at 12) or making my Energy hole bigger. I'd welcome suggestions and recommendations, on the slow piece or just the build in general.

i tried hard to improve my build based on yours (tohit and recharge resistance are sexy).

 

i have to admit that after 6 versions, "my" build looks a lot like yours now lol

i have just add crane kick for some juicy dmg buff and FF recharge, playing well with eagle claw mechanic.

Hey these are all great replies, however, it seems like (emphasis on the word "seems") dark armor isn't good until you spend a lot of influence (infamy) on the build. Am I right or am I off? I am stumped on this power set.

Its a good set, but you're not hitting all of the caps you're talking about in your OP without an investment.  That goes for all of the top tier builds that promote pie-in-the-sky benchmarks.    

 

When you see "Defense Capped Blaster" or "Tankmage Corruptor" or "Res/Def capped Dark Tank" etc builds, they're all going to be stacking purples, ATOs, Gamblers, unique Def/Res IOs etc.  

 

Not sure what you expected.

In my original post, the build I posted had ATOs, gamblers, unique def/res PVP IOs. The only thing it doesn't have is purples. I am asking if adding in purples has that much of an effect on Dark Armor, and if so, does it require purples in every power?

Are you having a bad day?

Just confirming your suspicions that, yes, you need some more investment than what you're giving it.  I'm doing fine, how are you?  

 

Take a look at what you're missing in your build and take a look at what some of the purples would give you.  There's a lot of Fire/Cold res and defense everywhere, Smash/Lethal defense in Blistering Cold and Psi defense all around to be gained that you're otherwise not getting.

Purples mostly add recharge and fire/cold/toxic/psionic resistance. Recharge is nice, but Dark Armor doesn't live and die by it. Fire and cold are relatively rare in comparison to more "popular" types, so not as critical to cap. Psionic is easy to get in other ways. You're going to have a toxic hole regardless. So one could argue that the purples aren't doing much for you in practice. The numbers look good and help give you bragging rights, but as far as the practical effect, I'd say it's pretty situational. I have a purple and a half, not a build filled with them. I think you can make do without purples. And it's not like you get no bonuses when you give them up. You get other bonuses.

 

Dark Armor does benefit significantly from investment though, yes. It doesn't suck without, but it really comes into its own with investment and incarnate powers.

Yup, as with all other builds, you gotta pay to win. DA on SOs is painful and an exercise of sheer willpower. With Dark armor it's more like pay to get your endurance under control, then pay again to be less squishy.

 

Here is a semi budget endgame build, no purples, no winters, no ATOs, but a few essential PVP IOs. It'll do ok, until you face things that slow you.

 

Don't skip your early attacks, without them you don't have an attack chain.

Unfortunately, it's the wrong kind of 'well-rounded'. Radiation has a Cold hole. Dark has an Energy hole - which is crippling since a large chunk of high-level ends are Energy damage.

Energy can be pushed to 90% though. So it stops being a hole.
