I haven’t played ninjas since live and I don’t recall what I paired it with but I’m thinking about a chaotic build.  This seems like it could be fun.  I was considering kin but aside from repel, not much mitigation to keep the ninjas up.  I imagine trying to heal them indirectly could be a challenge.

Any ninja stormies have good, bad or indifferent things to say?

Thanks,

Dave

If solo, you might have a decent time.

But in groups people will probably kick you on sight for having hurricane on, and without hurricane your pets might die easily.

Consider /cold, /dark or /time.  With power recoloring and stuff you can easily get away with /time looking like /storm without pissing off the silent majority

Nah, they won’t kick me.  They might quit.  I just have to make sure that I recruit.

I can also kb to kd in everything although the chaos aspect of kb does make me giggle a little.  Or maybe just a kd in hurricane and tornado.  They’d still flop around like fish.

I think it works because I know it does in the kinetics repel power.  Pretty sure this is used in cane as well.  Will confirm.

Edit: OK, I sit corrected.  I guess the kinetic repel only does knockback but hurricane does repel and knockback.  I'm still going to take it.   I'll just be responsible. *ahem*

The KB>KD IO will pretty much do nothing for hurricane. It repels, and every so often you will see a mob get knocked down.

Yes it still Repels, but the KB->KD IO stops Hurricane from throwing enemies, so it does tame Hurticane's chaos a bit.

I have a 50 Ninja/Storm that I rolled because I had an idea and the test server was down (...the idea I wanted to test did not work...)  Its still fun to play because I love the idea of Ninjas and Storm (thematically.)

But in terms of performance:

*Storm cannot softcap Ninjas.

*Ninjas have very little resistance.

*Storm has just a single target heal.

*Ninjas are melee so can't shoot enemies while hiding inside the safety of your Hurricane.

In sum:  Prepare to re-summon a lot of Ninjas (unless you keep the difficulty settings low.).  If you don't mind that, there's definitely fun to be had.

But Ninjas are disappointingly fragile and no secondary fixes that. Storm's mitigation just isn't enough without an aoe heal.  And once you're 50 any 2ndary can get KD mitigation from /Bonfire.  Meaning sets with an aoe heal well be much sturdier then
/Storm.

/Time does the best to shore up Ninjas, with big Def buffs and  aoe heals.   Honorable mention to  /Dark....

If you want to use Hurricane, make sure you a) hover and b) constantly circle mobs to herd them into one location.

I tried playing Ninjas/Storm on live and my problems were:

- O2 Boost is not a good heal and as an MM you'll burn through endurance too quickly.

- Steamy Mist, Snow Storm & Hurricane will burn through your endurance quickly. You could do without SS & Hurricane but at that point you might want to consider /Cold

- Freezing Rain, Tornado & Lightning Storm are the coolest parts of the set but the last 2 are late bloomers. You're stuck until level 35 and then you can ride the chaos.

But don't let a forum post stop you. Hop onto the test server, make a Ninja/Storm at level 40 and see if it clicks.

It's not optimal, but it is fun! On teams you still have your /storm powers to help, but KB->KD IOs are a must.

Now, go! Be the Tsoo Sorcerer you've always wanted to be!

This build is Chaos incarnate.

Slot a KB to KD in Gale, Tornado and maybe Lightning Storm (but given how it is only single target it isn't a priority).  The goal here is to keep things on their back, if they are horizontal they are not hitting your Ninjas.  Because they are squishy.  Throw in a Accuracy and Range IO to Gale for a wider arc and it hits more.  Freezing Rain is your bread and butter, use it whenever it is up.  It also knocks down enemies so it's really good.

O2 Boost isn't a good heal, it's mostly there to top off your minons.  Skip Snow Storm, it's useless in keeping your ninjas alive.

Hurricane is ok.  The To-Hit Debuff is nice, but you have to be very careful on how you use it.  Don't just run into enemies unless you are solo and need the extra chaos.  In teams you can use it to herd enemies into corners for AOE's to be more effective, it takes practice but it's useful.

Thunderbolt isn't worth taking as it's only Mag-2 stun (good for minions only) and your pets don't have anything that stacks onto it.

Also skip all Personal Attacks in the Ninja line.  They are not worth the END.

Smoke Bomb is situational.  If you can time it's use right it's a handy DPS booster for your pets.  I mostly use it either at the beginning of the fight or if a one of my minions is getting too low and needs a "disappear".

I hope this helps.  This was a very fun build to level, both in a team and solo.

Have many /Storm MM’s, although not a Ninja/ one.  Hurricane is pretty much a worthless choice for a Stormy MM.  You’ll mainly use Freezing Rain, Tornado and Lightning Storm.  With enough +Recharge, you’ll be dropping that stuff 2-3X per battle.  Hurricane tactics are better left for all the other AT’s.

I went ahead and built this bad boy.  It's fun.  I ended up taking all of the storm powers because... it's fun.  I don't use Hurricane often and snowstorm I'll use to pull enemies around the corner while the pets lay in wait.

I also took bonfire for extra mitigation.

Softcapped for ranged defense which is nice with so much going on in front of me.  It's all I need to survive most encounters.

Here's the build:

Bonfire seems redundant. Storm already has powers that provide the same mitigation type that Bonfire does. Knockback/down. If I were to play Ninja/Storm, I would probably roll with something like this:

Dual spec it. Make a second spec (you can switch builds once a minute with a command that you can turn into a bind or macro) that's just generic IOs but slot everything in your build including the bots for max knockback and recharge, I'd say it would be worth building the build entirely around recharge set bonuses wherever you can get them and otherwise just slotting for knockback everywhere you can. Force feedbacks in literally everything. Hmm. Can bots trigger FF procs on the master? Or would it buff the bots with it which is useless?

Make a Max Pain build. If anyone ever complains about your proper kb-kd build hit the button and show them what chaos really means.

If I recall correctly, I think it will trigger force feedback +recharge on the MM when you click the power but not on the pets or when the pet attacks.

Bit late, but why are you running Hurricane full-time?

When I run stormies the go-to powers are Freezing Rain first and then Snow Storm.  Rain makes them flop and Storm keeps them in place (and severely debuffs their recharge=less attacks incoming).

Hurricane burns too much endurance to warrant being always on, and as mentioned the repel is highly detrimental to most teams.

Where Hurricane is good/great?  Archvillains, as they don’t get repelled.

Freezing Rain, Snow Storm, Tornado, and Lightning Storm are your bad boys though.  Some even use Gale.  Gale, Tornado, and Lightning Storm need a KB>KD IO, but go from garbage to great when they have it.  Tornado does big big damage versus an Archvillain or Elite Boss.

Ninja/Storm can work, but you will have to be very aggressive with Rain, Snow, and Lightning.  Thunderclap can also lock down minions, if you can find the slots to spare.

Is it a top tier solo farmer?  Not by a mile.  It just won’t have the defenses to survive max difficulty.

But your Storm powers will wreak havoc on entire groups while your Ninjas dart about.  If that sounds fun, try it out.  I get bored with the “best farmer” toons, as you can faceroll the game with many of them.  Boring.

Storm gets crap because it’s a hard set to play WELL, not because it’s a bad set.

Posted

Not sure who this was in reply to, but I just use hurricane situationally.  The toon is fun and a deterrent  from what I normally play.  I don’t farm with it, nor do I intend on trying.

Just one of many in my stable of toons.

I love Ninja/Storm.  I did not take hurricane and almost never use defensive.  I almost exclusively fight in large groups.  I treat ninjas like a single target set and micromanage the hell out of 'em using sandalphon's numpad binds - usually having them all attack the same high value target.  I run in close to stay in melee range.  When I throw in Tornado and Lightning Storm and things get melted .

A ninja or two die a few times at mission in +4x8 groups (without crazy defense buffs stacking), but the ninjas also aren't completely made out of wet toilet paper, specifically they have decent AOE defense. Sticking to single target fighting gives them strength in numbers.  I give them extra mitigation via Thunder strike kd, tornado kd, and freezing rain -recharge -speed.  Electrifying fences I use as JIC to help keep my pets from Chasing runners.  You could also move the overwhelming force from tornado to genin and replaced it with a sudden acceleration for even more KD mitigation.

Build picture/ survival stats and pet stats are in the spoiler to avoid making everyone load so many images.

Hurricane still Repels.  If the devs ever make a -repel IO believe me i will be the ninja naruto storm kick man master and other runon descriptions for other mastermind primaries.

Most MM’s who play /Storm effectively disdain Hurricane for good reason.  You just don’t need the power.

Build for +Recharge and play aggressive.  Defensive is pretty much a great way to play a fairly useless MM.

Sometimes it's fun to be ineffective.

I have a dp/storm corr named Gus.  In certain spots he'll (I'll) pop on hurricane, throw everything out and exclaim "I'm Gus the bus, choo choo!"

He (I) gets over it pretty quickly but during those times it's fun to throw enemies all over the place.

Not everything is about min maxing.
