Robots/Rad build help

Generator

Recommended Posts

Hey folks,

So I've finally gotten my first Homecoming-era MM going.  He's Robots/Radiation; the subject line wasn't a trick 😄.  I've gotten him up to almost 28, so far going on just common IOs.  I've got a plan for getting up to about 35 or so, as outlined below.  Anyone got any suggestions for how to finish this out, from the standpoints of both leveling choices and Sets to use for the finished product?  Let's say the only real restriction is no purple pieces, or anything else that's similarly a bank-breaker.

Thanks,

Generator

I agree with @fitzsimmons build for Ranged Defense and use a Resist Shield of your favorite flavor. Personally, I like Mu for 'Bots because you can also get access to a small radius Immobilize that has -KB built into it (so you can lock in the most important target and keep him from being blow out of burn patches).

Make sure to add the two +Global Defense IOs into your resist shield, adds +6 DEF vs ALL for yourself, which stacks nicely with Protector Bots bubble, Maneuvers, Hover/CombatJump.

Definitely the pet IOs. You can fit 3 in there rather comfortably with the Overwhelming Force IO in the three little bots. I'd put 2 of the Pet Defense IOs in Prot Bots, since they are lower damage and trying to buff their Defense / Heals is not worth it, in my opinion. The other 4 slots can be used to get them to 84.4% To Hit, Damage with frankent-slotting.

Put one Defense IO in the Little Bots, and the other 4 slots to get them up like Prot Bots.

Eventually put the level 50 15% Resist IO into Big Bot plus a Sudden Accel. KB to KD converter for him. The other 4 slots to get him to 84.4% Acc/Dam/EndRedux.

You can up the damage on each to 9x% by swapping out frankenslotting and reducing EndRedux to 6x%, but I find for long battles I prefer more EndRedux. Its your call.

I can toss out a build for you, but it might take a few days as I'm pretty busy this weekend. Let me know.

I like the idea of Bots/Rad, and I think the pair of them will play nicely together.

Oh, don't forget a Lockdown +2MAG Hold proc in Choking Cloud. It will take care of most minions and some Lts fairly well. I use it all the time on my Ill/Rad Controller and only need to stack holds on Bosses while Choking Cloud does admirably in Lts/Minions.

PS - only get Provoke if you are building specifically for Tanker MInding. That's a whole other ball of wax, and for that I'd also dip into Fighting Pool and other things. I don't typically Tankermind myself these days I find the pets are tough enough I don't need to and I personally don't like that playstyle any more, but its certainly a viable option.

The posters above have given some solid, excellent advice. In addition to the above, drop Repair. That power makes hot garbage look enticing. Any other power would be better. Between Radiant Aura and the Repair Boys, your heals are covered. And Repair ONLY works on your pets, and has a looooong recharge for what it does. For a useful substitution, hasten (to increase uptime of AM and Lingering Radiation), Group Fly (snazzy with Bots!), Afterburner (LotG mule), Teleport Other (reposition your pet’s when game mechanics intrude and to help slow teammates; KB reduction mule), or Superspeed (full stealth with the stealth IO).

I'm playing a /Rad MM now, my first one (lots of rad, lots of MMs, but not a /rad MM)

You mentioned a budget build but if you can get both of the MM ATOs, preferably at least 4 of Command and all 6 of Mark of Sup., you can really boost your recharge to help get AM up quicker.  You can break up Mark into 2 slotting 3 times in 3 pets, the 6.25% bonus comes just at 2 slots for this particular set.  Command gives a 7.5% bonus at 4 slots.  Not even saying that has to be your final build, but leveling up it will give you good recharge bonuses.  If it's out of the price range, understood.

Based on feedback here (although I wasn't able to follow Redux's pet slotting perfectly), I whipped up this build for you.  Looks good on paper.  I did not slot in the MM ATOs but agree with Hedge's advice.

A solid base for you to change or build on.  Softcapped to ranged defense (the huge -tohit from RI gives you plenty of wiggle room) and near capped to S/L resists and decent energy resists.

I did slot in a pvp IO and a purp in choking cloud (procs), the panacea in health and the gladiator's armor +def in charged armor.  Those will all be a tad bit more expensive.  The only one you *need* is the gladiator's armor.  Overall, the build will be on the cheaper side.

For a destiny incarnate I'd typically go with Clarion, but certainly dealer's choice.

Enjoy.

The ATO sets are probably the upper bound of what I'd do on a pricing standpoint.

Many thanks to all for the feedback presented so far.  I'll be doing my best to incorporate it all into an actual build.  🙂

At, or post, level 32 I'd seriously consider slotting the sudden acceleration knock back to knock down IO in your bots. It makes a big difference, in my experience, to damage as they aren't constantly knocking the enemies out of the AoEs and fire patches, not to mention your own debuffs as a /rad. The down side is you can't then 6 slot blood mandates for the ranged defence, but for me the trade off was worth it.

I agree with the Sudden Accel KB to KD proc in the bots.  I'd also put a stealth fly into hover. CC is a good pick(it'll be like Entangling Aura from Nature) for standing right with the bots, I think it'll still work if you hover close to the ground. (it's been a long time since I played a rad/rad defender, though, I might be mistaken)

Personally I prefer having a stealth IO in sprint (either the run or jump one works) as it is essentially a free slot, leaving hover available to take a LotG, or one of the unique def IOs. It also means in escort missions you aren't having to lose a bit of def when leading them around as you need to turn off your stealth.

Sudden Acceleration KB2KD converter in Assault Bot, for reasons given by posters 🙂

Does that work ok? I seem to recall seeing some people posting that there was still knockback with the overwhelming force in bots, where the sudden acceleration worked fine. I can only attest to the SA version working, and I can't remember if the overwhelming force was slotted in drones or one of the other bots instead.

It's worked well for me, on Battle Drones, Zombies, Demonlings and Thugs. 🤫🙃

I managed to find the thread again and it was in assault bot that it was still causing knockback. And yeah, I can see the OF working well in the T1 pets that don't have any knockback, or only a little that needs converted, to add that extra chance of knockdown to especially if they do AoEs.

I see you had choking cloud listed, I found it surprisingly effective with the addition of the lockdown chance for +2 hold, although it is a bit of an end hog and gets detoggled a fair amount of times. Worth having if you play a lot in melee range, probably not so much if you like to stay at range.

It's a solid power, I agree. Has a clone in Nature Affinity. I enjoy them on both sets. Huge radius, so easy to keep things in it without necessarily being in melee.

I have a tendency to slap the debuff toggles on a target, then run right up on them, and have my robots work over the room while no one can do squadooch thanks to the mix of holds + debuffs.  So yeah, CC is on my "keep it" list.  🙂

It’s certainly a power that becomes more effective and valuable with more investment. It screams for accuracy (and global accuracy bonuses on top of slotting) and endurance reduction to the limit. And yes, the lockdown Proc is cool, but that Proc doesn’t go off very much under current Proc rules/chances. I see that as a YMMV option, should you have the slots to spare for the power.

Sorry, I realize that I avoided the direct question... But yes, I found that Big Bot didn't get the OF proc. So he gets SA. Not a real issue as I prefer OF in the T1s, as mentioned 🙂🙂

Are you sure about needing accuracy? You can't directly slot it for accuracy, and it doesn't appear to make a tohit roll in the combat logs. I always assumed it was autohit, but it only has a chance to hold, so I slot mine with end/hold IOs and I've never had an issue with it hitting.

That's always been my understanding of the power as well.

I've been playing this purely because it makes me laugh. I used to hate group fly but it just works here. You should be aiming for standard rad stuff as usual, perma hasten/AM which i just about scrape in when the ff+rech goes off in pulse rifle burst otherwise your gonna have serious endurance issues if you plan on running all those leadership toggles and the rad debuffs. Throw out a couple attacks when AM is down and toggles are on and see what happens. Going for all that recharge meant giving up something and in this case it was some defence which i don't notice as i hit power boost before applying the debuffs and once they are on your pretty much untouchable. I almost always go for web envelope because i love the -fly component and it didnt hurt to have scorp shield:

@CaptainLupisand @Generator- mea culpa! I misremembered from my fire/rad days. And honestly great news; that frees up some slotting. Thank you for the correction. Learn something every day...!

Hmm, so my first attempt at putting together the various pieces of advice in this thread came out looking like below.  It ended up soft-capped against S/L/E, which, given that I wasn't really looking to do that, felt okay.

Feedback?

Thanks,

Gen
