Kin / Rad Questions

Retroman

Recommended Posts

So I've been fiddling around with various alts when I remembered my first attempt at building a toon on CoX.  This was back when the world was flat, dinosaurs roamed the earth, and the game was Live.  (Don't ask what year I have no clue.  I DO remember having to do a mission at Level 20 to gain access to capes).

Anyways, my first toon was a kin/elec defender, and while he was kinda fun to play, I really had no idea what I was doing when it came to picking powers, assigning enh slots to those powers, and then slotting them properly to make a rock-solid healing / debuffing machine that teams would want on their teams.

Back then, everybody seemed to be raving about kin/rad defenders being the 'end all / be all' so I thought that I would give it a shot.  The thought of standing in the middle of a team with Transfusion on auto-fire while debuffing the bad guys sounds like fun to me.  I'll use the Leadership Pool to have Maneuvers and Assault (and Tactics if I can fit it in somewhere).

My Epic Pool will be Power Mastery (unless someone has a better idea).

The questions are:

1.  Which powers (if any) in each set (kin and rad, not elec) are skippable?

2.  How many enh slots (including the default one) should be assigned to each power?

3.  Which IO enh should go in each power?

4,  Which Sets should go in each power once I get the influence?

Thank you all in advance.  🙂

Welcome home!
Kin/rad is very fun. There's a lot of opportunities in it. IOs can make rad a beast (kin already is one). Kin favours you being relatively in the middle of it, and rad enjoys that too, so you can benefit from the heals/end/buffs. So I'd build a kin to avoid a beating.

You can probably skip:
Kin:
Intertial reduction
DEBATABLE: Increase Density (although its a great mule slot)
DEBATABLE: Siphon Power (FS should be shunting everyone's +Dam up, but you might want to do more -dam to the AVs etc.
DEBATABLE: Repel - chuck an KB converter in it and you get some very soft control, but it'll drain your end in a busy field. I often don't bother.
Rad:
Not a fan of electron haze without a knockback converter.
X-ray beam has quite a slow animation, I feel.

You wont need assault, I feel, with FS and Siphon Power going. Save you end. If it's Tactics vs Assault - I'd go tactics any day of the week.
Kin doesn't need many slots to work really well. I do heal (5), siphon power (1), siphon speed (2), transference (5-6), FS (3-4), and i'll sometimes do speed boost with 2 so I can put the winter set in for KB res and some rang def, ID (1).
Rad can be a such a little saucy proc-bomb. Play it through without worrying too much about IOs I reckon and get a feel for it. You can slot a couple of -res procs in it, as well as other sets.

You might want a patron/epic pool that has defence in it over a resistance one. Your HP is lower on a def. Would you rather avoid getting hit entirely, or just making sure that when you are hit then its for less? Scorpion shield is popular because of this.

Its hard to say what you should be slotting because you need to know how you play the toon? My first run with a water/kin corr I'd foreseen me to be going in/out more often than I do, but only after it got to about 40 did I rebuild it in Mids. My Kin is soft-capped to s/l and ranged. I hover above the mobs, using Fulcram shift Whirlpool/Water burst/Geyser.

But I guess my takeaway is: go and play it for a bit and see how you feel? Respec's are given out every 10 levels, you can still do the trials and you can buy them from the auction house. If you're on Excelsior then drop me a tell, I'm on @Xiddo as my global, happy to team with you as you try it out 🙂

What does 'mule slot' mean?

I have MIDs open right now . . . In order to take Tactics, I need to have either Assault or Maneuvers first.  I think Maneuvers would probably be the way to go.

Your thoughts?

By heal, you mean Transfusion, right?  The 1st power in the set?

I was wondering what happened to the Respecs that I had saved up.   Now I know.

I play on Indomitable sadly.  That's where my SG is.  It's just me and my alts.  I was a member of a couple of SGs back when the game was Live, and the bickering was insane!  I think I played on the Virtue server back then, iirc.

-----

It really hit home on how much has changed in the game when I was playing, the first thing that I did was to buy a RchRdx enh to put into Rest . . . only to find out, you don't have to worry about that anymore.  It was such a pain to wait for Rest to Recharge back then.

I'd say everything but Inertial Reduction and Repel should be taken on a Kin.  As for Assault vs Maneuvers, in most cases I'd say take assault, but Siphon Power + Fulcrum Shift is plenty of +damage, the little bit of defense in Maneuvers will go further.

For Rad Blast, X-Ray Beam has a long cast time compared to the damage it deals, so if you've got a higher-recharge build (like say, the bonus from Siphon Speed) Neutrino Bolt spamming is the better way to go.  Electron Haze could be skipped on a Kin since you'll want to be in melee, and EH is a cone, but your mileage may vary.

I disagree.

If you are playing rad blast, you are already making it easier for everyone including yourself to hit enemies as it is, and as teams get up there in slotting, accuracy/tohit is already well taken care of.  Assault on the other hand is over 18.75% on a defender, making it the highest version of something everyone always and forever needs more of: damage.  You only need so much tohit to fully accomplish what you need it to do... but damage?  Damage you can stack forever.

Your thoughts?

Personally, if I'm tight on powers I'd take manoeuvres over assault. But as @JayboH said, it does bring a high amount of +dam to the field. But I think having Siphon power + FS is enough. On a high rech build you can get FS+Siphon stacked a few times. You'll probably hit your damage bonus cap without assault, on my Corr I'm often at 400% dam cap most of the time. Assault on a Defender is great, but on a kin defender? Dunno if it's needed. But each to their own. Build variety is fun 🙂

Yep!

What does 'mule slot' mean?

So increase density doesn't really need anything else in it. Just 1 slot. And the things you can enhance only apply to other people. However, you can put a certain IO in it which does help you. The Steadfast Protection: Resistance/Defense IO can be put in there which will give you +3% defense to everything all the time, even if you haven't recently cast the power. Woop!

Here's my water/kin for reference. I'm sure someone will say it isn't the best it could be but I find it fun 🙂

I take assault and maneuvers, combined with siphon power it helps on earlier teams and TFs to start stacking up the damage. also helps to reduce the strength of AVs along with fulcrum shift

veng is a must have for defenders, a great team buff

interial reduction fantastic as it doesn’t succumb to the travel delay when attacking, lets you bounce around freely

i don’t build for any global bonuses, e.g rech, def etc. insps keep me alive and everything recharges quickly anyway

in Mids, at the top, go to "Import/Export" then "Short Forum Export".

I always check the "Export Data Chunk as well as DataLink box, then just click "Export Now" that will put everything on your clipboard.

A last thought Rad Blast is great as a "proc monster" type build and doubly so on a Kin.  Procs bypass the damage cap.  Kins should spend a lot of time at the cap without necessarily needing to slot for damage in the power itself as those damage enhancements count towards the cap (of 400%).

To get everything in, I had to forgo an Epic/Patron Pool altogether so no Scorpion Shield.

I even took a peek at Incarnates.  I've got a lot of time to decide on those.

I still can't believe that the name 'Radiant Beauty' was available.

I was trying to take a screenshot of RB but I couldn't figure out how to do that.

All help is greatly appreciated.

I think, with this, you could drop fighting for an epic pool instead. But each to their own 🙂 I only took it on the corr cos I don’t have nimble enough fingers to get inspirations going quickly. Also, by about the mid 30/early 40s the meat shield should be able to hold aggro enough/ enough damage and control about for you to not worry.

I team a lot with @MoonSheep on our kins and I can confirm he doesn’t need fighting pool or play any worse without it (when we do team it is a bit chaotic I’ll admit ha). The best way to not take damage from the baddies is if they’re all arrested/dead, so another attack from epic could work.

Well, I've been looking through the Epic Pools, and the only one that could conceivably make sense is:

Electric Mastery:  Thunder Strike, Shocking Bolt, and Power Sink.

Sadly, there isn't a Kinetics Mastery or a Rad Mastery.  I was a bit underwhelmed by Power Mastery for this toon.  😞

Doing some research, I found out the softcap for DEFs is 45%.  If I can just softcap Smashing, Lethal, Melee, and Ranged at 45%, I'd be happy.  😁

How do I take a screenshot of Radiant Beauty in-game?  I tried PrtScn, but it gave me a pic of the CoH Title card.

i picked up soul mastery for power boost on my kin def, it helps beef up transfusion if things are getting spicy, makes transference a real end sapper and it’ll boost the -defense component of your rad attacks

i really wouldn’t spend too much time overthinking your build, you could slot 2 acc / 2 rech into all your powers and you’d be 99% as useful to a team than if you had a 600m build - kin defender is pretty is one of the most forgiving sets out there

the game has tank/brute/scrapper archetypes if survival is a priority

Which Set Bonuses should I look for?  I usually go for +Regen,+MaxHP, +Recovery, +MaxEnd, +RchRdx, but with this build, are there better bonuses to be had?  I ask so that I can get my MIDs build all slotted out properly so I can print it out and reference it while I'm playing.

Also, I'm trying to take a screenshot of RB.  I hit the PrtScn button, but what I get is a pic of CoH Title Screen.  What am I doing wrong?

Assault is a very superfluous power pick for kinetics. Especially for defenders that get Fulcrum early at lvl 32, and lvl 27 exemped. Siphon Power is really only helpful up until you have fulcrum shift unlocked. Once you have FS, it is only useful for debuffing archvillains, or getting a little extra +dmg where there isnt mob saturation. It is still a 2 second cast time that does zero damage and offers zero set bonus opportunities and can be replaced by a red insp. I prefer having the utility of Repel when the endurance consumption feels good - recovery serum is always available and basically free.

Tactics may seem overkill, but when minmaxing a proc build it can be an important piece to have a large number of powers with zero slotted accuracy. Vigor Core Paragon is also a strong incarnate choice that boosts global accuracy by a very large amount, and provides endurance reduction to every power, worth an enormous number of enhancement slots.

There are two ancillary choices to consider - psychic mastery for a 6 dmg proc dominate and a resist shield that is helpful in a number of endgame encounters. The other choice is more ideal for radiation blasting - dark mastery. Oppressive Gloom gives you a mag 2 stun aura. This synergizes well with the Fulcrum Shift>Irradiate playstyle already present in the build. Oppressive Gloom allows you to instantly stun bosses with a single application of Cosmic Burst. Instead of waiting for Cosmic Burst to recharge to stun the first boss, you now have 2 stunned bosses on wobbling around. OG is massive for rad blast. Dark Embrace makes the character a great choice for the Imperious Task Force with the negative resist padding.

Build below. Designed for endgame with Vigor Core Paragon. Barrier at the lowest value provides 5 res-all and 5 def-all and pops you up to just shy of 45% ranged def with respectable melee/aoe def.

2 dmg procs in Proton Volley, one being purple

3 dmg procs Cosmic Burst

4 dmg procs Irradiate, one being purple, 40% aoe resist debuff potential

5 dmg procs Neutron Bomb, 12.5% aoe resist debuff potential - Ragnarok may be preffered here.

3 dmg procs Atomic Blast, absorb proc, capped recharge redux.

All powers with zero accuracy slotting have enough accuracy to hit +4 foes before def debuffs.

I thought about my choice for her Epic Pool.  After much consternation, I realized that Electric Mastery just doesn't fit with the character.  Even in comic books, it kinda bugged me when an established hero all of a sudden gains a completely different power.  None of the other Epic/Patron Pools seemed to fit either, so I gave Power Mastery a second look.

Conserve Power

Power Build-up

Temporary Invulnerability

These seemed to fit her more thematically, and if I take Temp Invulnerability, I can use Gladiator's Armor proc TP Protection (+3% DEF).  That does work in PvE, right?  Not just PvP?

It works in PvE as well. I prefer psychic mastery for procced out dominate and the set bonus you can get from world of confusion. You can get creative with theme, radiation leads to mutations and you developed mental powers which could explain both kin and psy.

If you are team oriented I wouldn't put off increase density until so late. Anti-mez powers regardless of what form are always appreciated by those that lack mez protection especially early on in their career. Additionally it is one of very few anti-mez that actually grants knockback protection, mastermind henchmen love it. I'd take ID no later than level 24, when you start to encounter more mobs that mez. You can keep both SB and ID on a whole team by buffing towards the end of each combat during the clean up phase,

Kin/rad is a mobile combination, you want to get into melee range to tag mobs with irradiate which make them easier to hit, you need to be close to mobs for transfusion and transference and to get maximum benefit from fulcrum shift. However, you don't want to stay in that range too long, which means you will be zipping in and out of melee range because if you get stuck in melee range with no defenses you are going to be in trouble. Enemy immobilization powers and other mezzes will run rampant as the game progresses, you may not have all the answers to mezzes but you can at least protect yourself from immobilization. I prefer combat jumping for the immobilization protection it offers. If you really want to fly get a P2W jetpack.

You also may not need aim so early, that only helps yourself. If you are team oriented Tactic helps the whole team and provides an answer to blind. I don't take assault especially for kins that have the potential to cap damage without that toggle, but for the leveling process some people advocate it.

Early game progression can look like this:

Level 8 is your travel power pick, or if you choose to use the P2W travel powers you can fit another attack there. You have one power pool left, some people go fighting for weave and shoot for softcap defense, others do without. Epics is up to you as well, procced out dominate does a lot of damage and shores up your single target attack rotation which is desirable against harder targets like AVs/GMs. Sure you can spam neutrino bolt all day but wouldn't you rather have an attack that can do the damage of 9-10 neutrino bolts in one shot?

I've been using Athletic Run.  There are a bunch of Sets which give bonuses to Run Spd so I can get a poor man's version of SuperSpeed using that.

When I take a screenshot, is there a special folder somewhere that it automatically saves to?  Or do I need to paste the pic into WinPaint or something like that?

Here are the Active Set Bonuses:

I sure hope that the +45% SpeedRunning applies to Athletic Run.  Otherwise, it's back to the drawing board.

Notice that there are no Purple Sets.  This is on purpose.  Those things are mega-expensive!  😱

RB uses the Blackwand (I think it's called).  This way when she gets to the Incarnate Levels, she can dish out Negative Damage as she now knows how to use her Negative Energy powers without the Blackwand.  The Lore Incarnate selection is open for debate.  I really couldn't figure out which Ally would be best.

Any comments or suggestions on how to make this build better are greatly appreciated.  😃

My OCD is gonna kill me at some point.

RB hit L10 tonight and so I was all set to use the Respec to put things in order.  Looking at the build in the previous post, I just couldn't let it go with the slot levels being all over the place, so I rearranged them.

I noticed that some of the Sets that I was going to use were L30 and L40.  It made sense to me to make sure that I have all the slots in that power ready to go (if possible) when I hit L27 (for a L30 Set) or L37 (for a L40 Set).

I changed only one of the Enhancements.  In Weave, instead of the Shield Wall proc, I put another LotG Recharge proc instead.

I changed at least one of my Incarnate picks.

Here's (hopefully  🤞) the final build (pending feedback from you good people, of course)  😃

Just for shiggles, I looked at the Stats Window:

475577678_RB3Huh.jpg.694e9f277a25e052f4a69ab78009166f.jpg

I was taken aback by this and thought that something had gone horribly wrong.  It took about 10 minutes for me to realize that I had also clicked Portal Jockey, Task Force Commander, The Atlas Medallion, and the Freedom Phalanx Reserve Accolades not to mention my Incarnate choices.

Once I get RB up to Incarnate levels, she's gonna be a badass!

Any comments, critiques, and help are (as always) greatly appreciated!  👍

+speed set bonuses are nice because they are unsuppressed in combat. They are rarely worth going out of your way to pick them up but you will often get a few by default. Kinetics get capped unsuppressed movement and benefit less from these bonuses than others because of siphon speed.

Purples are really not that expensive. You can use reward merits to purchase them. Play a while longer instead of making poor build choices just to avoid using them. The build I posted only uses 2 purple sets because defender ATOs can get you the other +30% rchg.

If you properly dmg proc your powers you will find the blackwand to not be worth pulling out.

Untoggle Barrier. Mids shows the initial barrier buff which scales down in strength massively after 10s, 30s, and 60s.

You dropped some substantial ranged def slotting opportunities for melee defense which is not how combat in this game works even if youre playing the character in close range. Your global recharge is uber super low. You're playing one of the best combinations to go ham with proc dmg slotting and put in almost none. You are playing radiation blast and didn't even put in achilles heel or fury of the gladiator.

Theres too many questionable choices to itemize feedback other than to say take a closer look at the build I already posted above.

Currently on fire.

Until you find yourself capping your damage in combat attributes (or at least nearly so) for most fights slot your attacks for damage not to enhance their debuff.  Later Tactics should negate the need for defdebuff.

Be aware the Numina's special is a proc 120.  It will trigger 100% of the time and last 120 seconds thereafter.  Meaning you need to fire Transfusion every 120 sec or less to maintain the buff from the proc.  Probably not an issue but something to be aware of when using it in a click power.

When using Mids I will turn on the accolades but usually turn off the click powers like the Destiny's.  They only apply in 45+ content and can really distort your numbers like Barrier is doing above to your defense and resistance values.

Edit:  At work be back later
