Good Dark Secondaries?

I've heard that Dark/Dark isn't a good combo because Dark Primary is mostly ranged and Dark Secondary is mostly melee.

I've read in older posts that TA and Dev are good, but I don't want a bow or devices.

 

What is a good secondary for a Dark Blaster?

Temporal:  Time Stop can take four damage procs and makes a great ranged hold (great with Dark/ abyssal gaze) that also has some debuff for hard targets, Chronos, Temporal Healing and Time Lord are all excellent powers and provide a bunch of recharge, and Time Shift is a great AoE Disorient/debuff, all of which work well at any range and will do a bunch to enhance your primary's strengths. Skip the melee attacks and the mediocre PBAoE if you're going ranged only, or take the ones you like best to fill out your build.

 

Energy:  You can skip all of the melee attacks and free up a lot of build space, while also getting Build Up, Energize, Power Boost and Boost Range, which all will enhance your primary.  This gives you a lot of room to pick pool powers and epic/patron powers that you enjoy.  Or you can take some of the melee attacks, which are very strong for those occasions when you are in close range.

I main a Dark/Dark Blaster.  it is....interesting.  I took no melee attacks.  (I will post the build below)

 

Playwise: The Nuke is so powerful.  I run stealth and fly all the time.  I swoop in.  Here is where it gets interesting.  Do I use soul Drain?  Often I do.  If time is short or the battlefield looks terrifying...nope.  So either Aim, Soul Drain, Blackstar, or just Aim and Blackstar.

 

I absolutely do not love the sustain on Dark.  Compared to Temporal it ...sucks.  You got to pump this thing all the time like an old fashioned farm well. It does have a hefty -to hit applied to your opponent though.  Adds nice to your primary attack chain in that regard.

 

But Darkness Manipualtion has Dark Consumption.  A very sexy power to fill your endurance bar.  Point blank AoE. 

 

Dark Pit.  a ranged 20 radius sphere with a mag 2 stun.  60% time it works 100% time.  Its a fast cast scew you to throw out.  Usually you are busy, but it is daned nice when you remember (or desperately need it)

 

Cones.  Yeah yeah.  Cones are the great AoE wall of never ending FU that Dark puts out.  That is all Primary Dark and Soul Mastery, but worth mentioning.

If my theme allowed it i would go Dark/Temp. Temp is so f-ing easy lol

 

As it is I am taking a Dark/Dark through lower level story arcs to get better with my powers. I forget i spent years just to get mediocre with Brutes and then I am only good on a few sets.  I need to practice Dark/Dark to know the rhythms and tricks if I want it to perform.

Abyssal Gaze and Moonbeam, fill in the gap with what you need I guess.  This level of recharge gives you options.  Sometimes you want the holds, sometimes you want the immob, sometimes you want the heal or need to hit umbral for the recharge boost.

It's probably fine.  Playing at range or flying you're not going to need to worry much either way, I tend to choose additional defense rather than resists for my playstyle, because sometimes no matter what you do you end up in melee range.  This is already a very safe build with ranged defense and tohit debuffs, fill in the gap however you want and it will work out fine.

Temporal (and /Time) secondaries are only "easy" for me in this way: I generally don't bother using the attacks until the mobs get to me. I definitely don't Blapper with my Dark/Temp.

EDIT: Key features (for me)

  • Chronos is on auto-fire, it fires every 22-ish seconds with a 90% chance of the extra %Build Up
  • The level 44 power (in this build, Tenebrous Tentacles) is a toss-up. I used to have Repulsion Bomb. As is, the build has "too many attacks" but I liked the set bonus as well as some %-Res.
  • Time Wall is primarily to trigger other effects from the secondary. If I could get a %-Res piece in it, I would slot this differently.
  • I want as much +ToHit as possible to boost damage from (Fast) Moonbeam. This is why the Kismet piece is in Maneuvers.

Thanks.  Been practicing (a lot!) with Dark/Dark.  I chose it for the theme but it is a solid set.  When forced into PB range you do get stronger with Soul Drain and Dark Consumption available.  The sustain is good, and at low levels helps complete story arcs.  Snipe main (usually kills), hold flunky 1, fear flunky 2, kill flunky 2, kill flunky 1....done. Of course as the missions get tougher or on a team you have to adjust.  But once you realize that Touch of the Beyond can incapacitate and get into the habit of using it that way the world gets easier.

I've been getting good results slotting Tenebrous Tentacles with 1 acc, 1 range and 4 procs.

 

If you take Electrical Mastery, you can get Static Discharge as a third cone. It recharges quickly enough that you can chain the three without gaps.

One of the deepest personal mysteries involves the current iteration of Fast Snipes: Do I burn a slot just to increase Range? I hate that the range of these was cut. I suppose I wasn't vocal enough when everyone was crying about the potential loss of %proc, but the Range lost is much more severe. It probably bothers me more on my Dark Blaster because of the DoT and Debuffing that makes enemies scatter to the four winds...

What is the percentage range loss of fast snipe? I ask this because I just posted about Kai Push, with one KB enhancer, pushes the mob out of range of my quick Moonbeam.

I think it was issue 27 page 2. IIRC The Fast Snipe range was normalized to 80 feet (100 feet for Psi?), whereas before I think it was 150 feet. As we all know, it doesn't take much for AI critters to run away. Personally: I miss the ability to draw a distant spawn to our fighting force as well.

 

On Dark, this really bugs me, as my Umbral Torrent is slotted to have a range of 104 feet!

Soul Mastery brings Night fall and Soul Tentacles.  Adds more -Acc and immob and rounds you out at 4 cones.  This is my answer to AoE on my high level Dark Dark.  I can sit at a comfortable range and fire hose the enemies     I go in for Blackstar and Soul Drain and sometimes Dark Consumption but i live at cone range or further 3 of my 4 cones are slotted with artillery for + Acc and range def the other gets bombardment and a sudden accel KB->KD
