I havent played in a very long time

That being said. I always played a stone/stone or something similar

Dont wanna be that slow anymore

But  I still want to be tanky as heck and still be able to do aoe

Well hell i want it all but im not unreasonable

All these new mechanics are something I have zero clue about

What do you suggest for a good tanker with that in mind. I would love to be able to do top teir stuff solo (since my wife bugs me all the time and I hate making people wait on me)

If nothing comes up no biggie Ill try to work my way through it

Why yes I do know what a search feature is. However with the 1000 returns it is hard to dig through all that. So I ask in posts.

tankers received a buff where by the radius of their attacks was increased by 50%. e.g fire sword circle now has a 15ft radius rather than 10, this helps them hit loads of things

i’d recommend shield as a good defensive set but also powerful AoE with shield charge. pairing it with something like war mace, ice melee, fire melee etc will give you a nice amount of AoE. i’m sure some more tank-experienced people will be along to help recommend some good melee sets 🙂

I'll second Shield. My Shield/Martial Arts has decent AoE, decent DPS, and excellent survivability. And the survivability is mostly passive with no heal or need for inspirations, so that you can easily AFK the moment your wife wants your attention. Some sets are a little tougher, some do better damage, but I think Shield is in the sweet spot, at least for my preferences, plus that AFKability. I mostly solo. I suggest Martial Arts if you want to be soft capped to all positions in incarnate content (+10% defense from Storm Kick). I suggest something with better AoE if that's not a priority, just get some feedback from people playing it to make sure it does enough DPS to handle level 54 AVs if that's included in "top tier stuff". Martial Arts can, but I think it might lock you into Soul Mastery for Gloom. That's how I approached L54 AV DPS, in any case.

Well darn it, you've got me thinking about Shield/Spines--hard to hit with incoming melee attacks slowed. I'd be outside my usual crutches of having a heal or endurance regain but that'd be what you'd IO for.

No...NO! Going to finish working on my  Elec/Rad  Tanker first before taking on any other projects.

I think Shield/Spines is a legal combo (edit: it isn't), but I don't think it would have the DPS. I'd say Irradiated Ground in Radiation Melee. I haven't played it, but I think I've heard it's good? I can't remember.

I have both Lightning Field and Irradiated Ground on my Elec/Rad Tanker and Irradiated ground ticks for about half the value of Lightning Field.

wondering how shiled/Dark would be.

Do you slot the toggles with damage procs/

Shield/DM is a classic combination and solves two of the weaknesses of Shield--lack of endurance recovery and lack of healing as DM has both.

Not sure if I should feel sad or relief that Shield/Spines is disallowed.

Sounds like @Werner is getting the same problem I have....old age/forgetful memory. We're just a couple of old farts.

Now...what are we talking about?

Oh, Radiation Melee. Yes, it is good. Slow, but good. You have a damaging attack that also heals you, a toggle Damage Aura, and then Devastating Blow and  Atom Smasher. Devastating Blow hits HARD...but it's slow. Some people don't like the fact that it takes a couple of seconds to fire off an attack. Eh...is what it is.  Plus, the cool thing with Radiation Melee is the Contaminated effect it has. In essence, if a target is Contaminated, your attacks on the target has a chance to cause damage to surrounding foes as well.

I'd say Shield/Rad would be a very potent combo.

Agreed, but it won't be great for AoE. Not that Martial Arts is either.

I believe it's allowed. But yeah, I'm not a fan of the Spines look. (Edit: Not allowed. Thread reading comprehension for the win!)

Is end a prob with shield?

Make sure to slot the Uniques (Numina's, Performance Shifter, Miracle, etc). That'll help. Plus, being able to soft cap fairly easily with Shield, you should be able to focus a couple extra slots on attack, Health/Stamina (for those procs I mentioned), and can always take Energy Mastery for your Epic power pool so you can get  Physical Perfection.

In character creation now

Gonna go SD/Rad

Now for the build.

Ok build gods....hook me up! 😄 hehe

Solo, nobody is going to kill your target while you're powering up your big attack, so it may be less bothersome. Shield/Radiation sounds like a winner to me.

I like Rad Melee and my Rad/Shield scrapper hits like a truck...dropped from orbit.

The downsides of Rad Melee that I found were (a) its a bit endurance intensive and (b) both Proton Sweep and Devasting Blow are craptastic powers (Sweep's cone is narrow and Blow's windup is long). I did not take either on my Elec/Rad Tanker, filling the gap by taking Cross Punch. Cross Punch gives a  minor recharge boost based on the number of foes you hit with it--5% for having either  Punch or Kick, 10% if you have both. I have both and slotted Force Feedback: Chance for +Recharge. It is a grand thing to flash 140% recharge bonus, though it only counts for anything if a power recharges fully during the 6 second window.

Right. Everyone suggesting their favorites so guess which one I'm going to suggest??

Fire Armor! Surpriseeeee!

No seriously, if a fire armor can solo the ITF on +4x8 with enemies buffed then then it's fine as 'tough enough'. Go Fire Armor/Ice Melee and you're good to tank the whole while feeling good about your damage.

Irradiated Ground is currently broken and extremely OP with procs. They’re aware of it though, so I wouldn’t expect it to be this way forever.

Shield/Rad would be a fantastic combo.

Good point. Also no temps, no insps. Though the Fire/Ice run I'm aware of was done in 2:25:51, and Shield/MA has done the same in 1:24:06. That said, the difference in those times is almost certainly survivability rather than raw damage output. Get rid of "enemies buffed", and I have to believe the Fire/Ice would be significantly faster, as it probably would be in most other situations. How about Super Strength for Rage? I'm told the crash is generally no big deal, and double Ragers kill really fast. And foot stomp is fun. I wonder how Shield/SS would work with all that damage boosting, plus Foot Stomp, Shield Charge, and throw in Mighty Judgment? That's a whole lotta powerful feeling attacks, at the very least, and probably for real powerful.

If you really want the opposite of Stone/Stone, go Super Reflexes / Claws. You'll be super speedy, lots of AoE and still with single-target enough to take down tough targets. You can even skip one of the AoEs and with the two left do tons of AoE.

And I think Super Reflexes might be the king of going AFK, so that's convenient.

yeah i was looking at SR but concerned with what someone posted in the other post about some weakness SR has zero defense to (sappers?)

Thought Ice Melee wasnt very strong...IDK

SR/Claws sounds fun too

IDK

I can try running it and see what time I get. Definitely will need either some tweaks or my Lore to distract the ambush since I tried to solo the ITF on normal mode and almost could do it but in the end I got slowed to a crawl and not even Barrier and Ice Patch was enough. I have another build with 65% -recharge though. That ambush atop the hill is just too much with 20+ bosses who all do -recharge and -defense.
