merrypessimist Posted February 23, 2022 Posted February 23, 2022 (edited) That's actually not a bad Yin derivative costume. Maybe a little sexier than I'd assume the actual character would go, but definitely within the realm of believable outfits. EDIT: On second thought, it's a lot closer than it looked at first glance. Now I'm more impressed. Edited February 23, 2022 by merrypessimist
Ukase Posted February 24, 2022 Posted February 24, 2022 I guess my question would be is why are we allowed to copy NPC names? I thought that wasn't allowed. 1

Maybe, all I know is that I've seen someone get genericed for having a costume very similar to Sister Psyche, but with a different character name. This "Penny Yin" also has a very similar costume and a similar name on top of that. But I am also not a GM, so YMMV. 1 1
Naraka Posted February 24, 2022 Posted February 24, 2022 That would be dumb to report this player. I often hear in power creep debates who is getting harmed if everyone gets stronger with the obvious re-enforcement that if players aren't causing direct harm to players, it's fair game. This hurts no one lol I probably wouldn't make such a character myself mostly because I like making my own lore characters but the closest I got was my Grav/EA Dom that does copy the appearance of multiple heroes and villains as alternate costumes with the main difference being he has a lizard tail (because he's a chameleon). Standing near the NPC where some might accidentally slide up to me only to realize the NPC is behind them is about as much "harm" as that could cause.
cranebump Posted February 24, 2022 Author Posted February 24, 2022 What was most interesting to me was that Penny Yin was running the Penelope Yin TF. FINALLY! Without_Pause Posted February 24, 2022 Posted February 24, 2022 I'm surprised known superheroes haven't had their names blocked from being used. Someone yesterday was running around using a known character from DC. 1 Top 10 Most Fun 50s. 1. Without Mercy: Claws/ea Scrapper. 2. Outsmart: Fort 3. Sneakers: Stj/ea Stalker. 4. Emma Strange: Ill/dark Controller. 5. Project Next: Ice/stone Brute. 6. Waterpark: Water/temp Blaster. 6. Mighty Matt: Rad/bio Brute. 7. Without Hesitation: Claws/sr Scrapper. 8. Within Reach: Axe/stone Brute. 9. Without Pause: Claws/wp Brute. 10. Chasing Fireworks: Fire/time Controller. "Downtime is for mortals. Debt is temporary. Fame is forever."

I did a similar thing with an alt-universe Manticore, tho the costume itself doesn't necessarily try to get mimic-level close. No harm no foul, just good fun and a reasonable number of "awesome!" tells. Edited February 24, 2022 by Cutter @Cutter So many alts, so little time...
MTeague Posted February 24, 2022 Posted February 24, 2022 I wouldn't report anyone for making a tribute-hero / clone of an NPC or clone of an MCU or DC hero. But I would say to myself "there's someone who will be generic'd in a few days...." And I'd have absolutely no sympathy for when it inevitably happened. Roster: MTeague's characters: The Good, The Bad, and The Gold

I ain't gonna snitch, and if it's a really good job I'll tell 'em so, but I'll assume any copyrighted character is gonna get the generic at some point. 1
cranebump Posted February 24, 2022 Author Posted February 24, 2022 (edited) And, just to add to the “homage-ness,” my own character in the photo is based on one of the in-game contacts. THIEVES! PeregrineFalcon Posted February 24, 2022 Posted February 24, 2022 After reviewing the Conduct Guidelines posted by the Homecoming Team, I haven't seen anything that says that a player can't copy or mimic a CoH/V NPC. Objection overruled. Being constantly offended doesn't mean you're right, it means you're too narcissistic to tolerate opinions different than your own.

Not that I care, personally. I'm guessing there are legal considerations they have to take so they don't get into a litigation situation, though. Edited February 24, 2022 by Cancrusher
