Reaction to Fire

Recommended Posts

I don't know about you, but if I'm set on fire, I'm either doing Stop, Drop and Roll, stripping off my clothes, patting it or running to a fountain.

Why do NPCs run slowly sideways when they're in a fire aura instead?

..It only takes one Beanbag fan saying that they JRANGER it for the devs to revert it.

Lore reason? Superpowered individuals are just built differently in Paragon.

Game logic reason? If fire cause that much commotion then Fire Blasters would never die because everything is constantly running.

Or theyd all die promptly as every villain group would say Oh no its fire powered hero X12345 BLAST THEM

and every single villain in the room would focus their entire arsenal on them to prevent the inevitable fireball

My Dear you deserve the services of a great wizard but youll have to settle for the aid of a second rate pick pocket

So you mean you'll put down your rock, and I'll put down my sword; and we'll try and kill each other like civilized people?

That would actually be really funny, if there were specifically coded reactions from various groups.

Like the winter event, the ice golems seeing a fire character and gain immunity to taunt/threat control and go straight for them to beat them to death before they all get melted.

Course, then you'd have fire tankers and brutes laughing like little kids in a candy shop as the entire map just converges on them all at once.

Probably the same reason why enemies will take a gunshot to the face and just keep standing like 5' away, waiting for the next one...

In this game, if you added that sort of realism, the player base would throw a fit. They want realism except when it comes to realistic reactions to damage. Boss runs away? Throw a fit. Minions scatter? Throw a fit. Knockback? BIG fit.

It is.  I run a fire blaster a decent amount of time.

So, there are various types of fire damage.  But you get the “hey i’m dead” a lot.  Then you get the “hey i am almost dead and rethinking my life goals”.  Neither of the two above are unique to fire, but there is a lot more of it.  Then you get the “hey i am standing in 1000 degrees” reaction.

My fire blaster is not built for defense.  It is built for maximum damage, some accuracy and recharge.  95% time it works 100%

Heh.  Yeah, there's a lot of players in this game who want the game play to pretty much always go like this:

1) Mobs aggro tank and stand in a big clump around it.

2) Tank taunt auras should be wide enough to keep all mobs on the map fixed like this forever.

3) Everyone takes knockback to knockdown and no one uses really fun powers, like fear or confuse, so that the mobs always just remain right where they are.

4) Everyone kills the mobs with impunity while they are focused on the tank.

I mean, if you want it to go like that, why not just have 2 AT's in the game.  One person could play the Tank.  Everyone else on the team could play a scrapper.

Boring.

So... you pretty well described my Shield/Bio Tanker though you forgot to throw in Fold Space into the mix. I do enjoy farming. I also happen to enjoy other things as well. While I do like mobs that stand in one place waiting to die, having some dynamic action would be fun as well.

I think the problem here is that each mob on a map doles out XP, and players want that XP. While that enticement is there, realism goes out the window. If there was some objective-based mission system that rewarded XP differently, farming might disappear, but I'm not going to be the one to suggest such a thing unless it could be implemented in addition to what we already have. Plus I have no idea where to start.

OK, but in what game that uses fire do NPCs or even PCs stop drop and roll?

 Everlasting's Actionette

Also Wolfhound, Starwave, Blue Gale, Relativity Rabbit, and many more!
