Infamy sink.. no,

just a fun way to exchange reward merits for random rolls.

just like we already have.

but if you are suggesting adding some new functionality for actual gambly gambly.. I am not against that.

That was what I was saying.

The Merit and AE ticket vendors already allow for "gambling" in what I think is a very reasonable way;  A random pull from a small subset of items.  Want rare salvage?  Z many Merits.  Want a large inspiration?  Y many AE tickets.  That sort of thing.

I have ideas for what I might do with "real" gambling elements in the game, and I have no issues with people gambling if that's something that they want to (and can afford to) do, but I think that there are many better ways to spend dev time than in adding such things here.

If they really need an influence/infamy sink I think that there are easier ways to add them then creating gambling interfaces.  They could just add a new random item vendor, for example.  Still gambling, but far less likely to cause a stir than adding a poker interface to the game and easier as well.

Obviously the Rogue Isles could set up a lottery where you buy tickets.

1/2 the proceeds are used for prizes  (recipient is still on the hook for fees to Arachnos)

The other 1/2 benefits the charity works of Westin Phipps.

Easy!

I think it might be kinda neat if there was an in-game stock market where players could drop a bunch of inf, just for fun.

how would this be different than the auction house?

what would be bought/sold

Okay, so basically there'd be an NPC or game window or something that's like The Stock Market, and it'd say "Would you like to play the Stock Market" or something to that effect and when you click the option to do so a portion of your inf is deducted from your total

You are saying just create a NPC that takes your money???

or, back to my original question.....

Stocks

Clearly, you're not familiar with how a stock market works.  As I mentioned early in this thread, what "Stocks" would you be buying / investing in?  Shares of what in-game company?  There is nothing like that so that would have to be created.  But to what end?

When you buy stocks, you are investing and hoping for a greater return on your investment (which you previously alluded to not wanting).  Yes, with the stock market you may lose, but generally, you gain.  But it's all based on speculation of the market and how well those companies do over time (which is not conducive to game play).  Given all this of this also doesn't exist in game, it would be be impossible to recreate without massive coding with no big impact on gameplay.

I think what you want is a simple slot machine - just a quick money sink with a small chance for a reward.  Use an easy RNG to decide if you win or not.  (Not a complicated system that would be a stock market.)  And the slot machine idea has been brought up in numerous other threads with heated debate on legality, and the general consensus seems it will never be implemented.

Stocks

stocks in what?

Stocks are units of ownership in a company, also known as shares of stock or equities. When you buy a share of stock, you’re purchasing a partial ownership stake in a company, entitling you to certain benefits.

Understanding what stocks are and how they work is one of the keys to investing, since stocks play a central role in building a well-balanced investment portfolio.

New NPC:  Stock Broker

What company would you like to trade?  Langston Corp.

Langston Corp is currently trading at $410 per share.  Would you like to invest or short?  Short.

How many shares would you like to short at $410 per share?  10,000.

Very good, you have spent $4,100,000 on 10,000 shares of Langston Corp.  Your broker fee is 5% (influence sink).

Player runs off to complete Dr. Aeon's Strike Force, assassinating King Midas, pummeling Princess Zoe twice, scattering the employee base to the winds, and handing their most valuable technology over to Arachnos.  Langston Corp's stock value plummets.  Player returns to Stock Broker.

What company would you like to trade?  Langston Corp.

Langston Corp is currently trading at $310 per share.  Would you like to invest, short, or close?  Close my current shares.

Closing your shares will return a $100 per share profit, minus 5% broker fees.  Confirm you would like to close your shares?  Confirm.

Player makes $950,000 profit.

*Note:  "$" is used in place of influence

Alternatively, you could do missions for the various Gold Bricker contacts to drive up their stock value.  Doing standard contact missions would raise a company's stock value in small amounts, where doing a Task Force would have a larger impact on the company's value.  IE, doing Tavish Bell's arc would raise Crey's stock value a little bit, but completing Manticore's task force and roughing up Countess Crey herself would have a much larger, negative impact on the value of their company.  Any other business where you could work both for and against them would be good candidates for the Stock Exchange (Cage Consortium, Aeoncorp, Herocorps, etc).  In a bit of indirect PvP, players would be working against each other to drive up and/or down the stock price of the companies they are invested in.

Fun fact:  in real life, there is no limit to how much money one can lose when shorting a stock.  See: 2006-08 housing market crash.

Play my AE Adventures, listed under @Jiro Ito, including award winners:

"The Headless Huntsman of Salamanca" #43870 **Scrapbot AE Contest Winner May 2022**

"On the Claw-Tipped Wings of Betrayal" #43524 **November 2021 Dev's Choice**

"The Defenders of Talos" #44578 **Mission Architect Competition Winner for October 2021: REBIRTH**

That's even worse than insider trading. That may work red side, but it sure won't blue side. And how would it affect gold side? (Does gold side even have a stock market, or have all the companies been effectively seized by the Praetors and only allowed such autonomy as is needed to function without the ability to publicly trade shares?)
