The MMORPG YouTuber Josh "Strife" Hayes put together the "ultimate MMO tier list," and City of Heroes is only ranked #245, behind a bunch of gacha games and games that aren't even out yet.  So when do we riot? /s

On a more serious note, I think that this means that City of Heroes needs more attention on YouTube, Twitch, and Kick.

I enjoy watching modern YouTube or Twitch streams of City of Heroes. Players today know how to adjust UI and position themselves so that their audience can feel like they're a part of the experience. In the old days of 240p and awful video compression software, it was akin to watching a car going through a car wash from outside the car.

Some random stranger who I've never heard and doesn't think much of our game probably isn't going to be playing with us?

I'll try to squeeze out a tear later.

I ended up watching this video! CoH ranked lower than MasterXMaster :')

To give some credit to Mr Hayes, this video is data-based, not opinions-based - and not based on very good data, at that. Essentially he combed the internet for every ranking of MMOs he could find, no matter how big or small the source was, and no matter how bad he thought the ratings were or how fitting the games included were, and assigned points based on position on the ranking. That means things like MOBAs, multiplayer shooters and survival games managed to find their way on this list because of some... well, not very high quality content.

Still, oof, definitely need to improve that visibility a bit if this is the result of that... some of the games (most of the games) placing above CoH are dire choices

I did appreciate his lamenting Coh's ranking when a single player mobile game ranked higher 😄

The majority of those covered are dead, mis-classed, or not released...so effectively, much higher as an actual number.

Though I have played Light & Dark and a lot of time on Project Gorgon, which is brutal and somewhat mysterious what your toon's effective level actually is. Skill based advancement...and at the time you needed to get skilled in everything to rank up.

He set out a methodology and followed it where it took him. I give him props for that -- it resulted in a different kind of video.

He could have broken them into groups of still running, not running, miss-classed, and never released. That would have made it easier to follow.

Also, the video class of "ranked lists of MMO's" itself was less common back in the early days, and I think that works against games like CoH.

Yeah...breaking the active out from the inactive would be a lot less misleading. Ironically, out of the 180 or so dead ones CoH is the only one that's made a successful resurrection. So there's that as well.

CoH is a 20 year old MMO missing a gaggle of QoL that better MMOs have. As far as visibility? You could try, and possibly it would attract a short term audience that leads to a bump and a very small long term audience.

But CoH was niche and obscure in its’ hayday. I doubt it’ll ever be a big title.

Also, you really don’t want that. It’ll lose so much of what made it great for you all in the process of going ‘mainstream’

Factoring out this cats ranking doodle, its not like we (the community of CoH) have been on a open campaign to increase the games modern credibility/visibility with gamers.  I mean if we mail bombed the big gaming sites CoH might get traction.  Then again, most of those big gaming sites are owned by corporate entities pushing a product to sell (or getting advertising revenue from) so an old game that challenges their model probably inst going to be seen with appreciative eyes.

Plus, to be quite honest, I am still a little gun shy; I worry that too much visibility might lead NCsoft to move on the "hot" property, or at a minimum raise the price whatever licensing deal was made (is there was a price) or start asking a price.

Only reason I even know of him is he recently started a playthrough of Daggerfall, probably my favorite Elder Scrolls game.

Anyway, I had a feeling CoH wasn't going to rank high based on how he did it.

IMHO, it'll be very difficult to get "modern gamers" to play a game that requires as much reading as CoH does, if you want to learn the lore or anything.  On top of that, things like cooldowns and the less than intuitive nature of the enhancement and even general leveling system can leave a lot to be desired, for anyone not willing to undertake such effort...

perhaps true, but as someone who’s enjoyed playing Trimps and other incrementals before i’d say there is definitely a community to people who like to ‘master’ complex game dynamics

I just started broadcasting on twitch a few months ago.  Problem being I loose my videos by not having enough subscribers.   Would you care to provide some feedback?

Fantastic content Monty!

Easy to see UI and plenty of room left over on the screen for all the action and hijinks. Audio quality of teammates was goldilocks (not to loud, not too quiet) and the overall video length lended itself to digestible in one sitting or easy to watch entire length if it's live.

The only addition I would recommend is giving the audience a sense of progress or idea of what you're doing (i.e., me and my gang of villains are going to fight the good guys or I'm leveling up my character with my friends and just chilling). This could be implemented in the video title or in an on-screen banner.
