Successful secondaries for Beast Mastery?

ParaBruce

Recommended Posts

I chose "successful" carefully. 🙂 A bunch of us have dabbled in various combos for beasts/ and maybe taken them into the 20s or 30s but not stuck with them, for various reasons. I'm curious who's gotten beasts MMs up to the level cap and done endgame stuff with them. What was your secondary? What was your build like? (.mxds and build dumps very welcome, as always at times like this.) What advice do you have for anyone considering beasts now, based on your experience?

Thanks!

I did some tests with SOs only at 50, no incarnates, on Justin awhile back, they did as well, possibly even better with /Nature as most other supposedly good combos did.  Oddly it did better before I read up how to play Beasts/Natures, so there must've been something I was doing 'wrong' that worked better than the current recommendations of how to play it, but I don't know what.  Beasts/Nature is is the only one I tested with either of those sets, so not sure on comparisons with other combos with either.

I've read good things about /time and /kin with them, and I'd think they'd work well with /thermal.   Both /time and /kin should work well as one of their major issues is running slowly after runners and doing nothing since they're all melee, /time can slow/stop runners, and /kin speeds up the pets and buffs melee damage, there's other sets that have slows or controls, /dark comes to mind, I think the +rech helps with fortify pack though, which might make /rad a choice as well since it has some +rech, speed, and a slow, and as the pets are melee are more likely to concentrate enemies near the toggle targets.  Of course a patron power with immobs might help too if you stick with /Nature.

Perma-Fortify Pack is a very high amount of Defense, so I would stay away from Defense-oriented secondaries as you may have too much Defense (although having some to spare against Defense debuffs isn't useless). But I would still consider them most effective when paired with a Resist/Regen or a debuff secondary. Pain, Nature, and Thermal would all seem to work well defensively.

The health absorb shield in nature has been very helpful.  I haven’t done my build to attempt get things perma on the nature side yet.   But it is nice and the pbaoe hold  toggle works surprisingly well, it takes a nice hold proc also.

So far nature and time have worked out very well for me.  As a matter of fact you can take Redlynne’s latest ninja/time build and do a direct port.   I am not near my computer but iirc I may have had to swap a set in the actual attacks.  I’ll try to post it later tonight.     I use his /time build on Mercs and it works well.   It will be good with beasts also.

My memory was correct.   You can do a direct primary swap between Ninja's and Beasts with Redlynne's latest build.   I think it was Demons that required a different set on one of the abilities.   My mercs build that is based on his also required to swap out two io's but that was for M30 Grenade coming into play and you have to handle the knockback and convert it to knockdown ( you just remove his range IO and Decimation IO, then put in a Sudden Acceleration kb->kd, and another Annihilation IO, which when you do that gives you an extra 3% endo reduction set bonus for all abilities).   For Beasts, the swap is 99.999% the same.  The only difference between this and Redlynne's latest build for Ninjas is that for the swap between Ninja's Smoke Flash and Beast's Fortify Pack.  Since Fortify Pack takes defense sets, you can put in one more LoTG Defense/Global Recharge.    The extra added bonus is that with /Time you don't need to ever actually use Fortify Pack, so you get the extra crits and damage increase on your beasts.   So the longer the beasts are attacking, the higher their damage gets, up to 10 stacks that is.

Yeah ... that does look suspiciously like my Ninja/Time/Mace build ported over to Beast/Time/Mace.

Who woulda thunk it that it could be ported so ... easily ... into more than one other Mastermind primary powerset?

However, I have ONE slight modification to the basic build in mind (which I haven't posted yet) that's a response to a PM I was sent a couple weeks back noticing that the build had a Knockback Protection hole in it (which is true, as it turns out) ... and I haven't had time to finalize the edit for an alternate build plan which fixes that flaw.

So closing the Knockback hole on the build CAN be done.

The problem is ... that the solution to the problem involves pulling slots from Temporal Selection and giving them to Farsight (of all things) and then turning around and adding the surplus to Scorpion Shield (of all things) so as to be able to slot the Knockback Protection IO from the Karma Defense set ... at Level 48(!) ... while simultaneously (and ironically) improving the overall global recharge increase from set bonuses via shuffling a couple of other things around (just trust me on this), pushing Hasten even closer to being perma (it's just barely shy of it) in a build that has no Knockback powers in it that can accept a Force Feedback proc.

I'll post it over in my Ninja/Time/Mace build post, rather than here, since the adjustment of the Jenga pile of the build is a little tricky ... but the exact same idea that @SmalltalkJava found to be true will continue to be true after the adjustment(s).  You'd still be able to make a direct port to Beast/Time/Mace by swapping out the Primary powerset and only "need" to make a slight swap on the slotting of the Level 18 power (Smoke Flash versus Fortify Beasts) since the set IOs that can be slotted are different in the two powers.  I'd imagine that the port to Mercs would remain equally valid with the update as well ... so I guess that's something to look forward to(?).

I love /kin.  It boosts and heals my pets like crazy plus it's very popular with teams.  Everyone loves speedboost, and I usually don't even summon my tier 1 pets.  I focus on healing and buffing the group and have a great time.  Even Repel is useful if you change Knockback to Knockdown.

I know this is from 2019, and probably won't see this to respond, but having no travel power will that not slow down your movement or did you just take a prestige travel power instead? I'm asking because of leveling up reasons

Fortify Pack also tanks the damage output of your pets when you activate it. The passive of FP grants your pets the ability to crit, and a crit chance based on how many stacks of Pack Mentality are active. When you trigger FP, it consumes all stacks to grant defense and regen, but prevents the pets from gaining more stacks for the duration (60 seconds). So making it perma would be significantly degrading your pets' damage output. It's one of the reasons I think the set needs some tweaks (and hopefully will get them when they do the pass on Thugs, Demons and BM soon(ish).)

As far as combos go, the ones I've played at 50:

BM/Nature -- the most "obvious" choice for a theme. The buffs provide a good chunk of damage and mitigation, as well as healing (though you have to position yourself to properly catch all the pets in the cone). It's a good mix of offense and defense.

BM/Kinetic -- far more aggressive, and provides less protection (increase density can buff resists to smash/energy, and substantially so, but that's all), good healing if you focus your pets on a single target to coordinate the healing, and their damage output is extremely impressive with fulcrum shift. Not to mention not having to worry much about endurance due to speed boost (though the +rech doesn't affect them), and zoomie puppies are always fun.

BM/Force Field -- rather dull, as FF doesn't provide a whole lot for you to do other than buff your pets and occasionally toss out force bolts to knock stuff in their butt. After the page-5 update it's much more interesting, though still not the optimal choice for "fun", imo. If you mix in ravens with a knockdown proc you can provide an extra level of protection by constantly knocking stuff over.

<edit> Doh, just noticed this was from nearly 4 years ago. Ah well. 🙂

It’s worth revisiting!  Lot has changed.

Beast/Cold is the easiest combo I’ve played with the primary.

Sleet?  Check.

Shields to cap pets, letting you never need to fire Fortify Pack?  Check. (It cancels them critting when fired, dramatically affecting DPS.)

Solid debuffs?  Check.

Defense toggle (Arctic Fog) that you can stack with Maneuvers?  Check.

My other favorite option is to go Beast/Storm, with the “big trick” there being you can slot Tornado with pet aura IOs.  This frees you up for procs, Blood Mandates, or HOs in the Beast pets.

/Storm is arguably harder to play well; /Cold is much easier on your reaction time.

/Storm is also much more likely to piss off teams in the hands of a bad player.

I use FP to slot glad recharge and enable PM. I never need it with nature. Pets are perma buffed to 75% s/l resist with mid defences.

Heres' a sample why...

I've only ever tried two MM sets to 50, 2 x Beasts and 1 x Demons.

Of the two I think I actually enjoy Beasts more and I've had success with /Thermal and /Radiation - but Rad gets a bit complex.

I'm actually seriously toying with a Beasts/Poison - given that Beasts is primarly a melee set that needs to be up close and personal so VG should come into its own if you're standing in the middle of a mob and spamming poisons - it also has a small heal and mez defence too.

But conversely I'm also thinking Beasts/TA might be a great combo - I'm having a lot of fun on a Sonic/TA defender and it would seem you could blind the mobs then sic your pets on them while debuffing the fuck out of them as they get ripped to shreds.

I've no experience of nature and I've never tried Time on an MM but I tend not to enjoy /time much on anything I have played.

But what of a Beast/Storm? That could be a ton of fun just because of the chaos it brings.

A friend asked me if I knew any Motown puns. I told him I know two or three, maybe four, tops!

Poison for MM's works a little differently than other AT's that can take it; namely in that VG gets applied to one of your henchmen and not you. Just to note that/clarify that.

I'm not sure why this thread got a super necro, but I'm kind of surprised not to see Beasts/Dark mentioned. Of the half dozen or so Beast MM's I have/have tried, this is the only one of mine that I've gotten to level 50. It's not my favorite MM and exists mostly as part of a personal RP storyline, but it is a solid combo that can debuff enemies and keep your beasts up and running with the debuffs even benefiting the MM to play in melee with the beasts, thus making the heal more effective.

I have a Beast/Kin that's in her 40's as well. It's a fun but very aggressive and fast combo and makes my head spin a bit trying to keep everything under control.

My other highish level Beast MM is a Beast/Rad in her 30's. I haven't soloed with her much, so idk how the pairing works in that regard, but it is actually a pretty fun combo that brings some really desired benefits that teams like (AM, debuff toggles for hard targets).

I'd forgotten that it was a Henchman it affected - I did have a Thugs/Poison back on live around 2008/9 but I didn't play it much once I got it to 50. But thanks for the reminder.

But that doesn't necessarily mean I need to rethink. I can cast it on a pet and make them defensive and follow me close - so they will be affecting the foes I want (in theory at least.)

Beast Rad (I played mine on an MSR last night for the first time in years) is very strong but it does require a bit of coordination - but potent when it works what with all the debuffs and rending of teeth and claws etc

No, I never said you need to rethink; I was just throwing the reminder out there that VG works a bit different on MM's. 🙂

And exactly what you said about Beast/Rad; when you get everything coordinated, it's pretty deadly I know there are plenty of good reasons for why folks don't like to take Rad on an MM, but I don't feel like it's as bad of a secondary as it's been claimed to be. Just not as easy as some other secondaries to do with every primary.

I really enjoy my Beast/Traps. Other than resummoning FFG every 4 minutes and dropping the occasional Triage Beacon, I can spend all my team debuffing the enemy with Acid Mortar and Poison Trap.

Ugh stop, I don't need a 20th MM alt, lol. I adore Traps so much, I just wish that the T9 in it could be replaced with the T9 from Devices (Time Bomb is basically worthless, even solo; gimme mah gun drone damn it! xD).

MMs get Detonator instead of Time Bomb. Still has issues (recharge is way too long), but instantaneous kaboom.

Derp, I even knew that. 😅 It being different anyway; I've never actually used it. I'm not fond of the fact that it also blows up your henchmen as well. I'd still take Gun Drone in its place, though maybe that might make /Traps a little OP on MMs lol.
