  1. ...80's theme music... taking over... ngh... my BRAIN!
  2. Please forgive me, but this is the first thing that popped into my brain when I read the OP: On a slightly more serious note, we always have options. We can quit a team for whatever reason, we can join another team who seem like a safer bet, or we can start our own teams with whatever criteria we want. The flipside is that if we don't use those options and have a miserable time, well, that's on us. Personally it almost never bothered me if someone on a team was "sub-optimal" in some way, so long as they were in the fight. If I saw that someone was having trouble, my usual response was to try to cover that player's backside in some way or other. Very rarely would I call them out, either directly or indirectly. In fact, someone would have to be clearly and deliberately trolling the team before I'd say or do anything - and I honestly can't think of a case where that actually happened. Except on my Kin defender. I was always angry when playing my Kin defender.
  3. While I'm not likely to play a Stone/* (or */Stone) stalker, I'll bet someone out there has a great character concept for it that actually makes sense. If someone wants to do it, why would I oppose that? At the very least, expectation-subversion or even just a quirky sense of humor can provide great inspiration for "off-brand" power combos. Also: Today I learned that this is actually a thing.
  4. It can't help but bleed into other areas, IMO, because current and future accountants, scientists, big data analysts, etc. will use whatever math software is available to them. As both I and @WanderingAries mentioned, it's probably best just to use parentheses (or brackets) liberally to avoid ambiguity.
  5. I'm not young, and I was never taught the acronym PEMDAS in school, but I was also never taught the "juxtaposition before multiplication/division" rule either. That said, as someone whose job demands a lot of on-the-fly math, I never would have typed the original formula as presented. Depending on the context, I'd either type (6/2)*(1+2) or 6/(2*(1+2)) [but with unit markers of various sciencey types]. That said, I usually do math on paper towels or kim-wipes or on the back of a co-worker's lab glove, so it would all look like fraction multiplication, which is far more intuitive to my old eyes. So on the plus side, I learned that juxtaposition has precedence over MD, so that's cool. On the not-necessarily-a-down-side, in turns out that all the versions of Excel to which I have access try to auto-correct any attempt at juxtaposition to make it fit a strict left-to-right format.
  6. @PeregrineFalcon was right the first time, as was @TygerDarkstorm's intuition. PEMDAS applies, but neither multiplication nor division have operative precedence over the other. The same is true with addition and subtraction. In both cases, they are calculated left to right (but with MD together having operative precedence over AS). The reason AS is calculated left and right is clear - you're going to get the same number whether you prioritize addition, or calculate left to right. The reason MD is calculated left to right is less clear, but you can see from this thread that you get different results when you prioritize multiplication, as opposed to calculating left to right. Thus, the left-to-right rule for MD is pretty much there to avoid these ambiguities. So... 6÷2(1+2) = 6÷2(3) = 3(3) = 9 The punchline is that If you really want to prioritize multiplication over division, PEMDAS lets you force it with parentheses, for example, 6÷(2(1+2)) . ...or, you know, you could watch the video, which I may or may not have done.
  7. Never got the impression that he did much more than "back-seat driving" for CO and STO, but I could be wrong. In particular, I remember that some guy nicknamed Zinc was the point-person for STO. And that he had a goat.
  8. WoW's graphics are the same all the way through. With that said, I much prefer the look of "classic" WoW to the most recent version of the graphics - much less resolution, sure, but IMHO (underlined and italicized for reasons), the new graphics look sillier, more cartoonish, and somehow "dead" compared to the older. As others have shown, it will be tough to find CoH style gameplay with more modern graphics. "Age of Conan" looks nice, but isn't exactly new. "DCUO" and "SWTOR" have been mentioned already. Graphically speaking, you could do worse, but neither requires a new-ish card. Plus, DCUO controls feel a bit janky to me. Aside from that, all I can think of are survival style games like "Ark: Survival" and "Conan Exiles." Big, expansive, graphically intense worlds with gameplay mostly involving gathering, crafting, and skilling up - but "survival" really means "open PvP." As in, people-beat-you-up-and-take-your-stuff PvP. On the upside, though, there may not be many people left in those games by now. If you're not averse to turn-based storytelling games, "Baldur's Gate 3" is in early access, and it looks really nice (again, IMHO, with underlining and italics and such). So nice, in fact, that after a couple of updates, I couldn't play it on my 6-year-old video card anymore... Oh, well.
  9. I never felt the "Jack hate," but I also can't recall him helping to actually create anything other than this game. Good luck to him, whatever he does and wherever he goes.
  10. Seeing D'Onofrio as Fisk again would be incredible, if it happens. However, I have to confess that I liked almost everyone in Daredevil except the title character. I don't know much about Charlie Cox as an actor, but I feel like he got the short straw as far as character development went.
  11. Currently working on my "Walk It Off" badge as I do tightly scheduled production runs with persistent plantar fascitis. If I'm lucky, I may also get the "Collateral Damage" badge from a co-worker who has been coughing and sneezing (but mostly coughing) for two straight weeks. Suffice it to say, he's already earned the "With Friends Like You..." badge from the rest of us. Another co-worker may already have gotten "Collateral Damage" - if so, he's in the running for the "Vacation? What Vacation?" badge, seeing as he planned a trip for next week. ...so, do these have to be real, in-game badges? Because I'm pretty sure I made up all the above.
  12. If I may, please enjoy some easy listening while you enjoy your fishy stick.
  13. Due to a recent experience on another social media platform, I've decided to make a new character - The Shadow Ban. Beyond the name, however, I have next to no inspiration for the character. I figure he, she, or it will be a Stalker or an Illusion Controller (even though I have one of those already), but no costume ideas come to mind. Though I suppose that makes makes some kind of meta-sense, really, when you think about it. So once again, I'm leaning on the community's creativity... with the hopes that not everyone will take the name as a call to action in itself. Or non-action, I suppose. Nothing off-limits, no "have-to-haves," hit me with what you got.
  14. That's awful. Here's hoping he regains his health and can get home soon, without any sticky red tape.
  15. While I've never been a fan of the Ninja Run animation, it would be cool if we could choose a default animation for whatever sort of run we wanted to use. For example, Hover has two modes that you can select during character creation, and I use whichever is appropriate for each of my fliers. I'm just not sure how much effort that sort of choice would require for running animations.
  16. My buffet recommendation would be a Dark Armor tank. Turn on Cloak of Fear and Oppressive Gloom, jump into a spawn, and watch 'em all shirk in fear or stumble like zombies. Oh, proper ones will curl their noses*, but you'll feel like a force of nature. As for ATs that I haven't given a fair shot, I'd say Masterminds. I loved the idea of them, but none of the powersets I tried really grabbed me. The longest run I did was a Beam Rifle/Robot MM, but that only lasted a week, and only because I got a kick out of the character concept. *credit to Skyrim for the half-quote
  17. @biostem, considering he'll be playing with someone who already knows the ropes, I'm sure he'll be fine with whatever he picks. Blasters have the added benefit of Defiance, so mezzing won't be a total loss of function. As for the magical bullet problem, well, he'd have to adapt to that with any AT. On that note, maybe it would be helpful to coach him on the relatively unique "gotchas" that CoH presents instead of focusing on AT picks.
  18. I hate to disagree - aww, who am I kidding, I love to disagree, so here goes: If TygerDarkstorm's BF is playing CoD, safety and convenience may not be what he's looking for in a game. I'd second Nemu and ForeverLaxx's suggestions to play a Blaster, in no small part because of the challenge. Throw in the huge powerset diversity that Blasters have, with secondaries that include blapping, budget crowd control, and buffs/debuffs, and he's got nearly the entire game to explore in one AT. Throw in a Dark powerset or two, and he's got a unique angle on tanking as well. Though, personally, I would have said Corruptor first. To be fair, though, any non-epic AT should work. Once he's gotten his feet wet, though, I'd urge him to try Defenders and Controllers. Maybe my experience is weird, but I learned far more about other ATs (and the game in general) by playing "support" characters on teams than I ever did from Scrappers, Blasters, or Tanks.
  19. That's easy - you can win bets against the Devil. ...um, Superhuman Tardiness. No matter how much you plan ahead, you're always late to something.
  20. I used to keep, and use, full "columns" of insps on live, one insp type per column. These days, though, I just convert mine to wakies when I can, then sell them to a vendor. The only exception is when I fight Veles. For that cheating *mutley mumbling*, I load up on Defense insps and change my battle-cry either to "Can't touch this" or "Naa naa na naa naa," as the mood strikes me.
  21. Huh, that's weird. When I worked at a convenience store in the 90s, some kid would curse a blue streak at me because he'd try to buy cigarettes without ID. Repeatedly. Isn't that weird?
  22. I've been playing around with an homage-slash-parody (mostly parody) of Zatanna that answers the age-old question: What would have happened if Zatanna went into law instead of show business? I've played around with a some controller and dominator combos, but haven't quite settled on anything yet. So, I'm opening this up to "other minds and hands, wielding paint and music and drama" as J.R.R. Tolkien said (please note, I'm not equating myself to Tolkien. Nor am I asking for paintings or music. Drama's ok, though). So what archetypes and powers would you use to create an awkward, timid, second-rate lawyer version of Zatanna?
  23. Wish I could help, but all the characters in my roster are small or medium sized.
