Focused Feedback: Teleportation Pool Revamp
GM Tock replied to Jimmy's topic in [Open Beta] Focused Feedback
Removed a bunch of posts. Please stay on topic concerning Teleport Pool powers. Try them on the Beta servers, let us know what you think. -
One of the few Prestige Powers that has a "natural 1" RNG outcome. 😄 The other one that makes me laugh is the "Lab Tanks" in the Science Lab instance maps. Destroying any of the four gives the chance of a short term buff to stats, or a debuff depending on what you get dosed with after the explosion.

.Net isn't needed with HC Launcher, that was a Tequila dependency. I had Lutris in the instructions because it has several support libraries that come with it for that purpose. Simplifies things for new Linux users, but if you know what you're doing with wine and winetricks, a more precision install is just as good. Thanks for the report!

Focused Feedback: Energy Melee Revamp
GM Tock replied to Jimmy's topic in [Open Beta] Focused Feedback
And I just hid a few more posts. Please stop discussing topics except the Focused Feedback prompt in the original post. -
WineHQ Stable is what I've been using all along. But my daily driver is still using 20.04. I don't intend to change that for a while. I'll trust you on the 20.10 part, though. Gentoo (first time user of it here) turns out to be a bit rougher than I thought... no installer, on purpose. You are expected to carry out all the steps. Unless there's a variant that goes against that grain (apart from Chromium or ChromeOS spins... saw Hexxeh's finally came down after being ignored for 6+ years), that's going to be harder to get right for the casual Linux user. I'll have to do more work on that.

It's simpler than it seems. Island Rum and HC Launcher are both patchers. They copy updated files to your system before the game starts. The error message is a reminder to finish letting the app patch the game before starting it. Once it says "Ready", you should be good to go.

Launcher keeps prompting for runtime install
GM Tock replied to HSV2006's topic in Homecoming Launcher
Does removing the Visual C++ 2017 Redistributable (32-bit) install clear it up? Do that, and if the screen for Modify Setup still persists for the x64 one, do a "Repair". Then retry HC Launcher. -
Did you use the wine provided in Ubuntu's repos then to test, or did you use WineHQ's build?
-
NTM Fedora 33 packs DXVK by default... this makes it competitive with Ubuntu for newer hardware for sure. List updated above with new versions. Looks like I need to get out the gas and test Ubuntu 20.10 soon. 😄
-
For Homecoming? Nope. For the live service, City of Heroes had it's own patcher for the longest time, then the NCLauncher was released just before City of Heroes: Freedom was ready. City of Heroes patcher was deprecated after a point (didn't work even if your account was current) then NCLauncher dropped CoH support after the game-that-was shutdown in 2012.

You'll get better advice from this thread for Linux. Let us know your system hardware and we can give pointers and tips.

That's the same thing we're referring to. It doesn't have to be named "Tequila" but it does need to be the same folder Tequila sends game updates to land in. HCLauncher and the given install location is considered a "portable app", so anything you install with Tequila shouldn't be affected, and Tequila in turn should not be affected by HCLauncher... You don't need to delete Tequila at all, but it's not hard to put it back.
-
Possibilities: Exit to Windows. In the client folder, find and delete playerslot.txt. (Folder Hints-- HC Launcher: accounts/"your login name". Tequila: folder with "your login name".) This resets login screen character positions when you restart the client. You make have made the character on another server. Check other servers to see if they're not on the one you expect. COH remembers character positions in the login list. Move left-to-right to see if they 'bounced' off screen.

All valid reasons to NOT remove Tequila: If HC Launcher has been giving your problems. You use Paragon Chat or Icon, which DO NOT work on HC Launcher. You're a digital archivist and want a complete history of the City of Heroes clients from Issue 0 and beyond. You are not tech saavy (which is okay!) and are waiting for a neighborhood-friendly computer kid to move your client files to the new locations in exchange for School Fundraiser money. (That will teach them not to forget the chocolate bars they promised next time.)
-
The new launcher will have a default location of "C:\Games\Homecoming", which isn't going to change once it leaves beta. Everything the Launcher does it does independent of Tequila. Homecoming Launcher will not remove Tequila automatically or on request. The uninstall process for Tequila is the same as it is now, simply delete the Tequila folder. As GM Korvin stated, you will need to back up any data you want to keep. The above list of folders in your Tequila folder are a good idea to keep a copy of somewhere before erasing Tequila. We do not have an ETA when the Beta test is going to be finished. Like most things in homebrew/volunteer development, it's 'ready when it's ready.'

If you mean keeping a copy of the prior version of the game as a Beta server while advancing the Live version to Issue 27, that's not serving a purpose for developers. Staging is for 'fast release' testing of patches in-between Issues and Pages. It's supposed to be as close to the Live version as possible. Beta and Staging use by players to compare characters or to try out builds apart from the Issue Release cycle is a side benefit. It's cool to do that, with two caveats: 1) we wipe those shards with no advanced notice, and 2) that's not why the servers exist, so there may be periods they're unavailable or there's a test we're doing that has a negligible effect to compare with.

This probably won't be a favorable outcome, but effects flash is tied to particle count. If you turn it below 10,000, you'll notice the effects are greatly diminished. Putting it as low as possible makes City of Heroes resemble a D&D session. (Arms waving, numbers appearing, no powers.) Not a great answer, but it's something you can do today.

Without getting into too much detail, this has been brought up before. Thanks.

I believe refresh rate is also a factor. If your monitor's rate is 59/60Hz, it's refreshing at 59-60 times a second. FPS and Hz aren't linked. You can set the game to push 80FPS-120FPS, but it won't be seen on a display working at it's own maximum of 60Hz. Adding 20FPS like Faultline mentioned can help the game smooth out in semi-laggy areas, but your framerate will drop on hard lag regardless of the maximum. The difference between 90Hz - 120Hz is diminishing returns as the biggest improvement in visual perception is ~30-80Hz (with less than 30 being a bad idea since even older NTSC/PAL TV Broadcasts are at least 30Hz. Lower than that and it's like watching a cartoon flipbook.) But you'll be hard pressed to find 90Hz PC Monitors over the 120Hz ones coming rapidly to market. On a laptop, going past your monitor refresh rate means undesirable effects since most laptop components are operating on more terse limits to keep battery life and heat acceptable. (Especially on low-noise cards like NVidia's Max-Q: certain setting 'clamps' are in effect to attain that low-noise condition.) It's not the same danger as overclock, but a really bad idea on battery power. (Which you probably shouldn't use on City of Heroes anyway. Gaming is best on AC.) In short, if you have the video card and monitor for it, knock yourself out. If not, you're not going to see much past 60FPS anyway. (Edit: As one of my childhood heroes puts it, you don't have to take my word for it.)

We'd need some more info: Windows, Mac? Generally you launch City of Heroes from the patcher you just used to install it. Either Tequila, Island Rum, or Homecoming Launcher (which is in Beta.) Tequila doesn't have a default location, so you'll have to search your computer for Tequila.exe wherever you put it (Tequila is only recommended on Windows). Island Rum usually sits in your Applications on MacOS. Homecoming Launcher defaults to C:\Games\Homecoming\bin\win64. (If the client in Win64 won't start, use /win32 for the 32-bit one.)

If grape flavored candy doesn't taste like real grapes, and watermelon and banana are in the same boat, why hasn't the United States Food Industry attempted a bad reach at Lychee Fruit yet?

...but they are listening. (Emphasis mine.) Granted, I'm advocating for Homecoming Team here, but for a moment ask what's better for the community, six people posting 400 times asking us to dismiss these changes along with a larger player base who doesn't touch the boards at all just finding out about it on Day 1, or finding a better answer after 400 people posted here once or twice each? That's what we're after. As you can see, there's a lot of commentary in here from a few people, not to say that it isn't all feedback, but it's time to hear from more people overall. We're getting the word out on all of our channels and venues. Get your friends to do the same (play the Beta!), and ask them to respond here in kind. And if they absolutely hate the boards, #beta-testing-discussion in Discord is just as good with us. We need more input and ideas, and that comes in different perspectives. If you tried it in Beta and are making your feedback known, awesome. (Please understand, I'm not at all saying this to try to discourage you. You're passionate about the game, and that is always something good.)

Curious, are the Orbus keys working at all in COH? And are the Orbus keys echoing the number row, NumPad, or are they acting as a special Fx Key Row (F13-F24, for example?) There are limits to the keybind names in the Fx case. If it's possible to change Orbus (either by profile, or in the device settings) to another mode, it may work easier. There ARE some controller fixes coming in Issue 27, but it's geared towards XInput and gamepads.

These are all the "Tray" Window, the lower right corner window (in the default window layout when launching the client for the first time.) Tray = Lowest Row in Tray Window Alt Tray = 2nd Row in Tray Window (visible by clicking on the right-most arrow button to toggle.) Alt2 Tray = 3rd Row in Tray Window (visible by clicking one more time on the right-most arrow button to toggle. One more click after this point will collapse down to the lowest row again.) Server Tray - a Special Tray that opens on certain Powersets, Power Pools, Zone Events and iTrials. These Keymapping options allow you to map buttons to each of these areas at-will. Note that Tray IS NOT always Tray 1, you can set the tray number arbitrarily with the mouse, or with a console command. (Same goes to Alt Tray not necessarily being Tray 2 and Alt2 Tray as Tray 3.) Any tray you set in the row becomes that keymapping location.
