I really like your build ideas and have just made a few minor changes I can share with you and everyone. I will start working my current lvl 23 character towards this build and let you know how it goes.

A few changes I made is a took out Tactics and put in Super Speed and moved them around so Super Speed is selected at lvl 4. I also took out the Kismet +acc and moved that slot to the Recovery with Power Transfer: Chance to Heal which may not be really useful as there is plenty of healing in this build already but I couldn't find any better places for that extra slot quickly.

Hopefully this build is a little more viable than my low level build has been so far.

I’m approaching the end with my blaster, and it has been a fun ride.  I still die a lot more than I do on melee alts, and I’m trying to figure out why.  My best guess is the lower HP, since I rarely get mezzed.  I do get cascading defense failure though.  Which brings me to my incarnate selections.

I freely admit that I don’t play most of my 50s significantly past opening their alpha slot, so lots of this is still relatively fresh to me.  The alpha has two easy choices: Intuition: Radial Paragon and Musculature: Radial Paragon.  Hold and range v. Immobilization and endurance mod.  I’ll take the former and that’s now at T4, with all others unlocked but none slotted.

Lore will be last and thematic and I’m currently not even thinking about it yet.  Judgement (sic) is kind of thematic.  I generally prefer Mighty for appearance but will probably be Cryonic with a cone to go with Umbral Torrent or Void ina PBaoe to go with black star and atom smasher. Interface is interesting.  I could load up on -to hit with Diamagnetic, go tried and true with Reactive, or just have some laughs with Cognitive.

The hard choices are Hybrid and Destiny.  I’ve never tried Assault, and I do want more damage.  But Melee and Support are compelling, and I usually go with support for the endurance discount.  Destiny has me all over the map.  Historically I tend to go with Vigor for the oh shit heal.  Decisions decisions.

For Destiny, I pretty much always end up with Barrier. All the Destiny abilities are situational, but Barrier just seems to have more possible use-cases.  In fact, even in an oh-sh*t situation like you mentioned, I personally think it is more beneficial to get a few seconds of megaboost to Def and Res, allowing you time to cut and run if needed, than to get a one-time heal. YMMV etc.

For Judgement, I like the idea of a cone attack to go with a cone-heavy build like dark/.

Tardy to the party here as you are at/near level 50, but in case you are thinking of blaster number two, I submit the Energy/Energy/Force Blaster.

This was my original character from way back (closed beta) and I am a bit biased, but it does perform

Areas it excels:  Great single target damage from range and melee

the best sustain (imo) - energize

neat utility powers that are nice to have but can be skipped -boost range, power boost

The coolest T9 primary in the game

Freem

good survivability (KB and stuns).

Areas it lacks: AoE - it get the cone early, but the range target aoe is late to the party (plus KB, see point 2)

KB - I personally love it for the fun factor but it isnt the most productive.  You will probably want to pay the KB tax for the AoE and cone (I skip the cone because I hate the animation)  If you pay the KB tax on Nova, you are really missing out...

This build allows for blaster herding - Explosive blast >> Personal FF >> run to next group >> aim >> BU >> drop pff >> nova >> mop up

Bored at work, Excel build.  No idea what numbers are or if rule of 5 is followed.

Ok, I'm finishing up on my Dark/Atomic blaster -- learned a lot.   I also found myself questioning some of my previous assumptions and trying out some new things.  I was hopinh to make a tank mage, and fell somewhat short.  I fell prey to something I fall for a lot; incarnates make good builds better, but don't really fill the fundamental holes I wanted to fix.  I believe that is mainly AT dependent, but I'll keep trying.

Some observations:

- I really like having both Build Up and Aim.  Use one for the setup, and one for the knockout punch.

- I think I'm missing something.  I'm running about 26% melee defense and 41% ranged defense.  Anything I hit with Umbral Torrent should get its To Hit debuffed by 6.3%, and another 5% minimum from Diamagnetic (100% chance).  Anything in melee range gets to Hit debuff by 8.2% from beta decay, another 5% minimum from Diamagnetic if it gets hit by any of my PbAoE attacks, and more if it's a dark blast attack (or the -to hit proc in Atom Smasher).  I'm getting hit a LOT more than 5% of the time.  Maybe that's my net melee defense being too low; maybe it's high accuracy opponents.  I'll experiment further.

- +4 is no problem for anything except AVs.  +2 AVs are fine.  That may be the build or just how I currently play.

- I really enjoy having two ranged holds to neuter troublesome bosses.  I changed the slotting from both being 4x Basilisk's Gaze to 2x BG and 5x Superior Entomb (I NEVER thought I'd find a reason to slot that, but here we are.)  Gave up recharge for ranged defense and some other goodies.

The minor flaws I have with the build are:  I'd like more damage (who wouldn't?), ironclad mez protection (I worked on solving that with incarnates for a bit, but ended up just carrying some break frees.  Best way to not get mezzed is to not get hit!), a little more endurance for drawn out fights.

Overall, I'd give it an A-!   Final build as follows (although I may swap out the Mako's set build for Blistering Cold to help even out my melee v. ranged defense disparity.)

If the servers ever go back online, I can start her alter ego, a Radiation Blast/Dark Manipulation blaster.  Looks interesting on paper.

Happy hunting!

26% melee defense and 41% ranged defense.

Your focus on melee defense is misplaced. Scorpion shield already offers S/L defense and you should be building towards that instead of diminishing your S/L investment by focusing on melee defense,

There are a lot of people like you that think melee blaster = melee defense. Wrong!

There are a lot of people that think melee blaster = you need to stand your ground in melee. Wrong!

Blasters are not scrappers or tanks or brutes. The lack of mez protection and reliable layered defenses means you NEED to be mobile, weave in and out of combat. Learning to move allows you to limit your exposure to melee attacks, And the things you CHOOSE to engage in melee will not live long. However the things outside of your melee range/zone of direct mob interaction will shoot you with impunity, often with mezzes and other debuffs.

Even for a melee blaster your defense priority should be range defense first. It makes more sense to stack S/L defense next to take advantage of scorpion shield. S/L defense will cover most of the attacks coming at you from melee range, range defense will cover the rest. Being mobile means you don't need to softcap S/L defense. My Dark/Atomic took leviathan for knockout blow and she does fine with 25% S/L defense because I know HOW and WHEN to move.

I would also not factor beta decay into your to hit debuff calculations and I certainly would not take it that early in your leveling progression. The power is a trap and encourages you to play like a LOL melee AT and I think you'll spend more time re-toggling it back on that early in your career vs actually getting any mileage out of it.

This is how I would build it with scorpion shield, data chunk included if your mids is not as up-to-date as mine.

@Nemu makes valid points. With Scorpion Shield, you should focus on building S/L/E defense to cap. This will inherently cover your melee defense, since the vast majority of melee attacks have a S/L component to them. After that, get as much ranged defense as you can. Nemu also fixed Abyssal Gaze, which I really think should be slotted for damage/procs. If you really like having a long duration Hold, slot Positronic Cell for it and let Abyssal Gaze be a proper attack. You can still double stack them to freeze a boss, and won't need to hold them as long with AG hitting so hard.

Good thoughts, and I generally buy into @Nemus theory on range over melee, but the problems I have (which are admittedly few) are with bosses and AVs.  I'm not at the point in my blasterdom to kite them, so generally I go toe to toe and that's when one or two blows get through and floor me (I'm looking at you, Infernal.)  but it's highly possible that my feeling that I'm getting hit a lot more than 5% of the time can be chalked up to observer bias.  I'm sure not going to spend the time looking through combat logs.

I neglected to mention that my typed defenses are 39/39/56/46/17/17/17.  If the -to hit buffs from dark/diamagnetic/beta decay/other are working as intended, I should be effectively capped to smashing and lethal already, so maybe I'm better off chasing resistance bonuses instead.

I appreciate the comments on beta decay and abyssal gaze, but for now I'm sticking to my guns.  Beta Decay early on debuffs not only to hit but defense, which saves me a lot of misses before I have accuracy bonuses.  Yes, it's a pain to have it drop, but my secret is to not let it drop.  I'm guessing that as a toggle it pulses every ten seconds so that enemies rushing into melee range don't get affected instantly, so maybe that explains some of it.  As far as abyssal gaze goes, I have a working 3-power ranged single target chain already and adding a fourth ranged attack doesn't seem to add to my DPwhatever as much as the protective aspect of having two ranged holds at my disposal.  I'll probably play around with it on another build though.

Who run Bartertown?

I think infernal has some pure type range attacks that hurt which range defense helps with. The one attack that usually get me is his pbaoe axe attack that bleeds/burns. This happens even if you have softcapped S/L defense, due to no resistances the bleeds/burns will get you.

This comes down to jousting melee and really using movement to minimize consecutive melee hits on you. Definitely a lot more work than standing your ground.

FYI If you look at my build I have softcapped range defense and 40% s/l, the remaining 5% is easily covered by the debuffs in your powersets.

Since you are loaded, or so I hear... 😬 You can always get the defensive amplifiers, they make a huge difference.

From a playstyle perspective, the moment you take a hit you should hop up/back. This will stop the 1-2 KO scenario and buy you time to insp/incarnate/whatever. You can always change your direction mid jump and head back into the fray, and that moment of the AI trying to decide whether to shoot you or chase you may save your life.

All this talk of building a new and exciting Blaster and not one mention of a Mad King? For shame the likes I've never seen! Clearly the best opportunity that could every be had is not to follow all these Fire Blast pretenders and go with a real blast monster: Energy Blast!

I even updated the build to the most recent Blaster patches with the change to Dynamo, and the best part ever is that this type of build doesn't care about Incarnates at all! They're focused entirely on their own sufficiency pre-Incarnates, and this beauty is one that has the luxury of sporting a back-to-back Aim+BuildUp cycle for non-stop +Damage, and for a solo player the options to unslot for maximum KB effect is always on the table! The build also features incredibly strong melee and ranged damage opportunities, and sports that ever elusive Force of Nature slaps the roof of the imaginary build-car you'll fit so much Resistance in this baby!

So what are you waiting for, embrace your inner madness and try out a Mad King Today!

You have an empty slot on negatron slam. What should be placed there? Build looks like a lot of fun!

The posted build (in this thread) was Energy/Electric and shouldn't be missing a slot when opened. You may be experiencing a loading error between Mid's updates maybe? There is a variant that does include Atomic however, just for reference over in the Mad King thread.

You'll be happy to find that what's in-game and what's in-Mid's are two different things. You can actually slot the regular Def Debuff sets in several of those powers unlike how Mid's is coded, my biggest point of contention for this is Negatron Slam of which I have an Achilles proc slotted in-game, but Mid's does not allow for.

I would dare argue that Atomic is a case of secondaries where having S/L/E is probably going to be favored over Ranged since you'll find yourself far more often actually up-front and personal with enemies due to things like Beta Decay and Atom Smasher.

Actually back-pocketed a Dark/Atomic build during Mad King experiments, have one on hand that covers pretty much everything but a few points of defense (grab a base defense buff or... well just about anything you want will fill the gap in-game).

@Sir Myshkini apologize. I quoted the wrong build. This build (from the mad king reference) had the empty slot.

Ah, yes, for that one it is the Achilles' Heel proc. Negatron can end up serving as a good addition to a ST chain since it is a pretty heavy hitter. Mid's doesn't acknowledge it, but you can slot the proc in there in-game if you're inclined to do so, otherwise any damage proc could be placed there too.
