I haven't created a WP tank since the early days of CoH.  I'm not even sure IO's were in the game at the time.  Recently had some fun cutting my teeth on a very strong AR/Elec Sentinal and am curious what I can do with a WP tank set with bonuses.  I'm just not sure which direction to take it in since it's a blend of different goals.  I always lean towards high resistance builds, since I've found the bonuses easier to manage.  But, being on a lot of late game content has started to make me loathe debuffs.  Just wondering what others do.  I Enjoy making nigh indestructible builds that either can resist or avoid debuffs.  (If another armor set is more viable, I'm open to it.)

Any advice would be helpful.

Willpower is a heal armor, with high SLP resists, extra endurance recovery and crazy regeneration, but a weakness to energy damage.  My main was a Dark Will scrapper, and even with his resistances the end game was rough until I softcapped his energy defense.  It is a good set, but if you hate debuffs, defense sets are what you want: Inv, Shield, or SR.

This is a brute TW/WP build I had lying around.  SL 90, P 55, softcapped energy defense.  A tanker would be even harder to kill.

And here is a Shield Dark tanker.  SL 84, the rest ~43 before the tanker proc, icap Melee, softcap Ranged/AOE

Here's that Shield Dark tanker quick-changed into a Will Dark.  SLP 90, softcapped energy, good regen and recovery, but you're gonna eat a lot of debuffs.  I notice they also lack a ranged attack, so they were probably concept builds.  Either way, it gives you an idea of ways you can go.

Infinitum has a nice build in this post here. Just watch out as it includes incarnates.

I've done a build for a concept tanker (aiming for Psi resist and taking theme powers like the Force of Will ones)- hardcap res to S/L/P and 50% res to E/N/F/C

Defence isn't as high as I'd like but I was prioritising Psi resist and defence.

What secondary are you looking at using?  For WP I generally try to hard cap S/L and then soft cap E/N/F/C and have somewhere around 700% regen.  As for debuffs, your best bet is Ageless Radial Epiphany on auto fire.

I'm not sure of how these would work build wise as I haven't tried them, but Radiation Melee or Spines would add a debuff/damage aura and help WP's lower intensity Taunt Aura (unless that was updated).

I've always had a hard time with WP Tanks, but I've found this thread helpful number wise. Thanks for the discussion.

It was! Taunt auras were normalized on tankers (i26 page 4, same one that made the big tanker damage & area attack changes) and Rise to the Challenge applies mag 4 15 second taunt to everything now, like all other tanker auras.

My current tank on Homecoming is a lvl 50 WP/Spines.  I think what I'm dealing with a psychological one.  I had played nothing but squishies up until I built that original WP tank back on live years ago, so it felt really strong at the time.  Now, after years of playing and having a decent understanding of IO's and whatnot, it doesn't feel quite as strong.  I think mainly because now you can change difficulty levels.  I don't think you could back then.

Either way, thanks a bunch for the information.

My WP/Spines is only in its 20s, but I've played the set enough to have a good feel on survivable it will be.  Here's my planned build.  Regen is slightly lower than what I'd like, but I suppose if you were to go Vigor for your Alpha that could be made up for.

WP doesn't have a self heal in the primary.  This means that Dark Melee and Radiation Melee are primo secondaries, because they give you that reliably (DM) or at least occasionally (RM).  Since the tanker AoE improvements Dark Melee is much more fun than it used to be.

With willpower, the main thing you need to do is live long enough to take the alpha and let your regen saturate.  If you can do that you might take a dip initially but after that you will be golden.  Definitely will want Tough and Weave though.

Here is a Will/MA build I made. For some reason my Mids is showing the KB prot as being .1 instead of 10 and the end rec as being 8+ when it should be 4+. Olde will tanks builds don't show this problem and I even remade the build and got the same results. I am not sure why.

Certainly is an option.  Heraclea (Inv/DM) swaps between Rebirth and Barrier at will.   I don't generally build for 50 though, since I have too much fun when exemped.  Willpower works fairly well for mid level content.

Staff would work well with WP for a survival build. The extra +13% resistances and the melee defence staff offers in Body Mastery can help a lot.

Ageless Radial for debuff resistance (DDR) to your defence and endo management with +recharge would work well. Barrier and Rebirth Radial also.

There are a few choices with the alpha slot that will work well. You decide which based on build. Agility, cardiac, spiritual, musculature for example.

WP is a superb set for play where you won't be expecting to min/max. This is a very friendly "set and forget" set, which is forgiving for beginner to upper intermediate, due to the layered mitigation.

I've build many WP toons and love them, but when the difficult ramps it will tend to fall off; what causes this is the layered mitigation with too heavy a reliance on regeneration. Because WP doesn't have very high defense or resist, it will tend to take much more damage. Normally, this is ok, but due to how RttC works, it doesn't completely translate to sturdy at the extremes. As one encounters debuffage in the end game, especially -regen, WP will begin to falter. Once defense drops, damage will become quite extreme. Further, if you're hit with -regen, life gets very uncomfortable.

So, recognizing that WP is great, plays easy and is very forgiving, will yield a fun experience. Don't expect it to do what it can't; Pushing into territory an invuln or stone would faceroll will cause some sad days.

Very well said and, ITF defines your last paragraph, exactly.  My WP/Fire tank is 110% of everything needed, in almost any content, until ITF...then he gets shredded without Barrier...while my invuln tanks giggle that it "tickles".
