Originally I was going to roll a Shield Defense / Martial Arts Scrapper (and still may) but I thought about using Martial Arts instead on a Tanker to leverage the +Def from Storm Kick (that Scrappers do not get). Is Pairing Storm Kick's bonuses with Shield Defense just overkill on a Tanker though? Am I better off trying to pair it with a different primary?

Yes. Def is overrated. Role a x/martial blaster so you can experience the thrill of almost dying in every tangle. Nothing like the threat of death to make you value life. 😃

Srsly, though. Kicks and shield are a very fun combo. I'm not much of a bean counter when it comes to stats, but the sheer enjoyment of flying and roundhouse kicks while holding on to a shield is like Captain America with a bit of Kung Fu training. You can of course swap the fist animations for some of the kicks... as they conveniently hit with the unshielded hand, but kicking is funner.

Since shield is a mixed set of Def/Res, the extra defense from storm kick is not necessarily overkill.  The nice thing about it is it means you can focus more on resists and regeneration in your set bonuses since you're already hovering around the soft call with just storm kick.

What this team needs is more Defenders

I hope I am not - nor trying to overstep here, but if you like you could try this build - it served me well as my second maxed homecoming build - it has room to tweak for more attacks or different travel powers - as is it is set to max levels of unkillable - the go make some lunch and come back without a scratch kind.

Take a look at this also I changed a few things on the above build - and has some nice Min Maxed stats at this point - plus gained another attack to aid in the combo building.

I've considered this combo myself. Being an orange number addict I was thinking that MA's quick animations and generally good single target DPS would combine well with Tanker's higher damage scaler and the damage bonus from Shield Defense. But I'm not sure if I want to try it on Tanker or Scrapper first.

Excellent build from Hyperstrike, there.

 

The resistance numbers are impressive.  I've got higher defence in all positions.  But my resistances don't compare to those.

 

It's a great balance of Defence and Resistance and Hyper's chosen most of the powers (as I tend to do in most all builds of anything.)

I think that may be because one with the shield is defaulted to "on" it is a situationally useful power - and you can actually rotate it with melee core for a near perma result - however with it having an end crash and not being perma - I never count that.  Also on Active defense you really want to run recharge on it so it double stacks more frequently - effectively doubling the DDR it yields.

I hope I am not - nor trying to overstep here, but if you like you could try this build - it served me well as my second maxed homecoming build - it has room to tweak for more attacks or different travel powers - as is it is set to max levels of unkillable - the go make some lunch and come back without a scratch kind.

You can swap around hybrid incarnates and even run ageless core if endurance is an issue -and like i said earlier also travel powers.

 

The cool thing about shield is for 99% of content you wont notice the lack of a heal and for those instances you could run melee core or one with the shield for greater durability - even rotate the two for levels of durability greater than invul at that point - but what i normally run is assault radial for attack and one with the shield for extreme mitigation environments and the rest is cake at that point.

Edit - Finally got my laptop to work - haven't updated it in a while - normally would be on my desktop but am out of town right now.

 

Take a look at this also I changed a few things on the above build - and has some nice Min Maxed stats at this point - plus gained another attack to aid in the combo building.

Hmm.  You can aim for good positional defence with some effort but the robust balance (resist/defence/debuff protection/stamina/heal/accuracy/damage output - the holy grail of tank builds) of Defence and Resist to those high positional defence numbers is ideally what we're after.  (Shield's Achilles heel is resist - but that certainly isn't the case here!)

 

Sure, we lose some of the Street Justice's 'fluffier' single target debuffs but one could argue it's more direct (a chainsaw rotation of smack down) as a result and the trade offs for those resistance numbers and the defence on things like Fire seem compelling.  Even Psi has decent resist.

 

If I was going to roll a Shield Street Justice Tank?  This is the build I'd choose.  Smack-Tastic.

Wow some amazing builds.

 

Anyone have a Tank Shield/Energy melee build with Flight please? I've been gone a couple years and I'm leveling up this alt right now 🙂 Is it possible to make a Brute that can tank the end-game trials? Or tank is just way better? maybe I should make a new thread 😛
