No not a new kind of costume at iCon.

Is there a hard number for when a thread turns necro?

Does it fluctuate depending on the nature of the thread?  For example, if no one posted a costume in, say, 60 days on the "post your best costume designs here" thread, would it then be a necro thread, or could it be added to at any point without scorn, while a restarted casual question thread with the same delay would be discouraged?

I resurrected the oldest thread on these forums a few years ago for fun expecting it to get locked. Other times I've responded to someone who responded to me years ago, albeit too late for any real discussion since the person(s) have left never to return or hung up their capes.

No hard and fast rule that I am aware of. GMs would be the arbiters of that sort of thing.

Edit: Here's the thread. Somehow still open...

This thread is already necro, it was dead when posted.  My scorn I heap upon it! now, i am off to do important things!

lol. I may post a "Rise from your Grave!" thing if the thread has been dead for most of a year.  That said, I'm also kidding when I do so. Picking up where an old discussion left off can be just as valid as starting a new thread with a link to the old.

Reviving an old thread does run the risk of someone else reponding to something in the first 2-3 posts from long ago, because they didn't notice the date-stamp. But sometimes, it can be desireable to keep things condensed in ONE thread.  I'd like to think we're all (mostly) functional adults here, so if occasionally we reply to something ancient, really, no harm no foul.

Eh, as long as it's still on topic and not version 3584 of said topic, then whatever

The threads I see shutdown the quickest are ones from a OP that hasn't posted much and since then their question is no longer relevant, but someone felt compelled to answer.

But there really is no hard fast rule.

Thread count isn't want makes it necro.

It is how long the thread has "been dead" before it is "brought back to life".

But maybe you are talking about "hard number" as time and not as thread count.

I would think if it was "dead" for more than a couple of weeks or a month then it would be considered to be necroed.

I've seen some "brought back to life" that were dead for a year or more. (and, I have accidentally posted to some myself because I didn't realize how old they were).

I would consider that to be a necro thread if it was "brought back to life" after that long.

Most likely ... and, yeah, based on the kind of thread that it is.

I think one thing that is usually seen as a "bad" necroing of thread is when a thread is a "dead horse" thread as well as being "brought back to life".

If someone posts a reply quoting me and I don't reply, they may be on ignore.

(It seems I'm involved with so much at this point that I may not be able to easily retrieve access to all the notifications)

Some players know that I have them on ignore and are likely to make posts knowing that is the case.

But the fact that I have them on ignore won't stop some of them from bullying and harassing people, because some of them love to do it. There is a group that have banded together to target forum posters they don't like. They think that this behavior is acceptable.

Ignore (in the forums) and /ignore (in-game) are tools to improve your gaming experience. Don't feel bad about using them.

All the above being said....

I don't have a problem with old threads being added to, when it is say, a help and support thread. That shows that the person with an issue has tried to resolve their own issue by researching similar issues and that the items and solutions from this older thread have been tried and did not resolve their issue. It gives the people trying to find a solution more to go on to resolve their problem. Many times I am much more annoyed when we have 3 or 4 threads started at about the same time on the same issue because the posters failed to even look to see if there was already discussion going on about the issue they are having.

Rather like a Chinese egg

Being serious for a moment, context is everything. In other places, for example, I've blogged about personal stuff like health issues and it's silly to start a new thread regarding updates even over a period of a few years. Likewise, if it's a relevant response, it seems daft to start a brand new thread covering the same ground when that reply remains germane to the subject in hand.

Equally, just going "Yeah this is how I feel" on a discussion that's been shuttered for a couple of years is frankly super annoying. I'm not gonna read back a whole few pages just to learn how you feel. Just bloody say how you feel about what in a new thread and then let us all point and laugh in unison at your dumb feelings.
