We play a campy game where we run around in our underwear while playing in our pajamas knocking out cartoon bad guys. What gets under your skin so much? Why argue till a thread gets locked? In other words, what subjects do you find worth fighting for and objectively why?

There's a thing in psychology called somatic thinking and I think it's a good tool to use before engaging in an forum argument. I have worksheets upon request.

I don’t think CoH topics themselves get under anyone’s skin. I think bad faith, ulterior motives, persistent ad hominem sniping, logical fallacies, brazen lies, etc tend to be the things that do that.

If I find myself frustrated by the behavior in a thread, I stop reading it.

Which stinks because some opposing opinions are stated so well that I find great interest in their reasoning.  Then some folks show up with thoughts on this game so strong that they fire off posts with the heat of religious rage, and every attempt at actual discussion gets ruined.

People have been fighting on the coh forums since they were a thing.  I think it was worse on live than on Homecoming.

Remember that the guy who ran the secret server after shutdown got doxxed and received death threats when word got out -- over a game.

It's troo discussion often gets stifled by trollery.. some feel trollery can be entertaining, even the GMs like it to a point, and sometimes folks simply can't help themselves.

There's two types of trolls to my mind. Those that take the piss out of a serious argument in an attempt to diffuse it and lighten the mood, and those that fan the flames and drive a further wedge between players.

Just to be clear, you're asking about the pedantic and antisocial behavior... in an online forum... for a 20 year old game... about super heroes.

None, really, I'm too old to yell at people being wrong online. I poke holes in arguments, then throw 'em on the ignore list if they still don't get it.

Incorrect, I really don't know why as the majority of the population is literally too old for drama lol

...You're trying to do the same thing now with this thread to an extent.

I mean what do you expect for an answer?

Sometimes threads get locked even when discussions are civil. Stuff happens 🤷

Sometimes some people just derive joy from being asses in a thread. Usually arguing against a point isnt a problem, but it's when people argue against each other instead of the main point of whatever thread topic is being discussed.

You raise some good points. I just enjoy our community and when I see a thread where people are getting nasty it gives me the sads. But all I can offer is advice for avoiding confrontation and making oneself heard without aggression. But that depends on the person listening.

As RL picks up over where I am, I most certainly wont be paying attention to any threads in CoH/any asinine back n forth that can take place a lot in threads.

Thats really about the only advice I'd give. Trying to alter people's behavior online is well...not great.

Ooph... ok so if that's true, I don't know of a polite or gentle way to remind someone that they are projecting.

You've assigned your own opinion to the majority, and then cited that as the reason you can't understand a group that doesn't share it. That's going to make understanding people difficult.

That's all on your end though. You sort that out and you'll likely be able to understand people who are different for all kinds of reasons, not just the people here.

So many people just want to prove to others that THEY are RIGHT that they don't realize the ones that want to have an actual constructive conversation about something have LEFT.

Many of my responses are said with tongue firmly in cheek... 😉 One thing I've learned over six decades of life is that very little of what goes on or is said is actually important enough to matter in the grand scope of the cosmos...though for each individual's small world such things might seem like the totality of their existence; it's all a difference of perspective and the emotion attached to personal value.

The dark side is still not giving up its cookies though... :P

Let people like what they want.   As long as they aren't forcing it on you, then it's not an issue

What gets under my skin on a given day varies with the amount of sleep and coffee I've recently had. Some days, I want to reach through my monitor and smack people. There have been a couple of times, if I'd been able to do so, (once in retail, once since HC opened) I'd probably have been arrested for assault. I can't even articulate what they did that made me so mad, but I remember the rage. They just pushed the right buttons to get me pissed.

Now, annoyed - that's happens a lot. But it happens so often, I don't really even notice it anymore. I've typed out so many "Are you serious?" And "Who cares about this?" posts, and deleted them, or worse, posted them, then hid them a minute later, realizing what a jerk I was. I'd like to think I've improved. I haven't had a GM tell me to chill for over a year.
