Sentinel Energy Blast is absolutely atrocious.

I don't remember talking about Elec blast on Sentinels.  I've rolled one though.  Seems decent.  Got a good 'feel.'

You might be.  But I'm not.  I'm not yelling.  (No caps lock?)  (I wasn't yelling.  I was quiet the whole time I type that....honest.)

My costume is cool, though.  I didn't say EB is ok because of it.  You said that. 🙂

I said 'I am having fun.'  I didn't say 'Me have fun.'  

The title is roughly 'Energy is Atrocious.'  It isn't.  It's fun set with mediocre damage output and erratic damage.

Your aggressive tone represents you well.  

MMOs are hard to balance.  Somebody is always going to be holding the 'atrocious.'

The devs weren't 'poor' at balance.  I'd argue the game was better than.  ED? made the game 'better?'  Meh.  Using 'pure' feel as a guiding post.  I preferred it pre' ED.

Hard numbers are useful.  After that.  If you haven't got 'feel' you've got nowt.

Maths aint the only thing matters.  It is just a part of it.

I've had lots of fun playing energy Sentinel.  More so than the other alts with energy on different types.

'Official request' to boost Energy's numbers from 'mediocre' to 'good' in single attacks and AoE?

Who wouldn't want that?

It is neither hysterical nor absurd to state my views, support my position with evidence, and make a conclusion -- and it's rude to come in here claiming otherwise when I think I've made a pretty good showing of trying to be polite and thorough in making my point. The facts I cite are undisputed, and enough people agree with me in my analysis of those that it seems unfair to characterize them as fringe.

 

And Bossk, while I appreciate the support -- really, I do -- let's try and keep things peaceable when we're talking about our superhero fantasy game.

Finally, yes, there are alternatives to double-posting, and I will try to update my earlier tables to the new formatting when I don't feel like dying.

I've had some time to think more about the problems, and possible solutions, for the state that Sentinel Energy Blast is in. At first I thought the problem was the IO tax; then I thought the problem was the powerset. With more time, I see it's really a conjunction of the two things.

 

The single biggest problem is, I think, how utterly disappointing that Focused Power Bolt is, along with the sameyness factor. I think it needs to give a stacking -res penalty on a good duration, given its high recharge time. Power Push is a reliable single-target crowd control even if it does 'tax' to knockdown instead. Both Power Burst and FPB I think should get a slight damage increase of about 10%, bringing them closer to Power Push's DPA numbers but not quite getting there, and being more satisfying for their cast times.

 

Then I would like to steal a little bit of Energy Manipulation's thunder and just change Sentinel EB Aim into a hybrid of it and Boost Range. Just like Corruptors get Power Build Up in their epic pools, I'd call it Power Aim, and it'd work as Sentinel Aim does now, but it increases Range by +66% instead of +33%, better allowing Sentinel to compensate for knocking back out of its own range, 

 

The second biggest problem is, I've been looking at the Knockback sets all wrong. One way to address them is to come up with other single IOs that can be broadly 'sprinkled' into other builds. Another way to address them is to make them five-slot better.

 

Sudden Acceleration has its recharge bonus as the 6-piece bonus and the HP as the 5-piece. I feel comfortable guessing (though correct me if I'm wrong) that no one who's looking to stack HP bonuses goes after Sudden Acceleration. I think it would be an acceptable violation of the cottage rule to bring the recharge bonus down to position 5, buff the HP bonus to 3% HP, and put it at position 6. Because this still doesn't damage cap an attack without a damage alpha and it gives crap-all for the other benefits, you're not going to see a lot of people take it willy-nilly.

 

Finally, I would like to propose that there be a Very Rare Knockback set added. There's a Very Rare for every other type of secondary condition, so this isn't out of line. As with the other Very Rares, this would be a near straight upgrade of an existing Rare set, in this case, Sudden Acceleration. The Knockback to Knockdown bonus would be the sixth piece (and thus optional), and the 6 piece bonus would grant the Force Feedback: Chance for Recharge bonus on the attack but at 3.5 PPM rather than 2 PPM. This makes it a strong choice for being used on attacks that recharge relatively quickly rather than ones that recharge slowly, but prevents it from being abused without the full six slot dedication.

 

In the event that it is not possible to create a proc effect via a set bonus, then I amend this proposal to make the 3.5 PPM recharge the proc effect, slap a hefty Schedule D Knockback bonus onto it to discourage melee use, and remove Knockback to Knockdown from this VR KB set entirely.

guys this thread is going to get locked if we continue this conversation in an unhealthy manner. 

@Sunsette I have an EB sentinel. While i agree with EVERYTHING your post says. I still love it and its fun to play. I consider my Sentinel a ranged tank i do very little damage but can take quite a bit of punishment. Holding aggro is irrelevent to me, we have tanks and brutes and scrappers for that. As far ass KB goes i think the best way to make everyone happy is to make the overwhelming force set non-unique. 

 

That being said

 

While it may be pricey, it isnt difficult to build a blaster that is every bit as tough as a sentinel excluding mez protection. 

Its easy to criticize a suggestion but can you suggest an alternative?

Reading this thread just confirmed for me that Assault Rifle is just the worst on Sentinels and really needs some looking at.

 

I mean personally the AT as a whole needs a massive overhaul and rework, the concept is sound but Sentinels as they are now are just...meh...they're jack of all, master of none, middle roady and positively beige. Blasters can, minus mez protection, become just as tough as Sentinels with IO builds nullifying their major advantage but Sentinels cannot deal as much damage as blasters using IO build. A bit more survivable than a blaster, not quite to the same degree as a scrapper, damage which both their competition (I'm not including stalkers because they're single target extraordinare) craps on from a relative height. In a world of specialists they do everything to an 'ok' degree which means they don't stand out from the crowd.
